I feel allot of these comments are counter productive to what this thread is about, not to mention overly critical of a free service. The staff can only use a direct ping to help them analyze the current change and then make future decisions to best benefit the community as a whole.with every change there will be new benefits and downsides.

You can please some of the people some of the time, but you can't please all the people all the time.

Just give constructive feed back so things can move in a positive direction.
    Just my two cents.

I dunno if people are trying to criticize the server so much as venting their frustrations, but i do think if people want to build a case for moving again this thread is probably doomed since page 1 or 2 for a lot of reasons.

I hope we don't have to lose anybody. but as UO plaers i think we all know how mergers and acquisitions can really mess up a good thing ;)

Nah, I was playing with 150 ping before this move, I ping sub 50 now. Even so, I'd go back to being slower if it helped keep the euro/east coast players.

I'm in the UK (soon to be leaving Europe due to idiots voting leave) but not near London

Yesterday my ping was avg 356
    Today it's 516

Previously I was on average 195-220 ping and I could game fine but I'll add the caveat that even with a lower ping honestly I suck at PvP!

Although I've not got the orange banner on my forum posts I am a subscriber to this wonderful server so I'll not be doing anything rash like leaving as I trust Chris and the team and over time if it's not working out then I'm sure they will look at other options available.

However if you see my ghost in game doing the old ooOOOOoooOOoo then throw me a ress and I'll accept is as a soon as my connection allows ;)

    Stay positive folks!

So the bottom line for Euro players seems to be a +100ms base ping difference, which is noticeably laggier.

That being said, this is such a nice server that I would personally gladly contribute to a fundraiser/buy stuff from a donation shop (gasp!) in the future if it enabled a server move to a more beneficial location for a greater amount of players (unless the current location is actually best for the current geographical spread of players).

We're going to build a server, a great server, and we're going to get Greenland to pay for it.

    A player location based map....

Are we really ddos'd, non stop as bad as we were last year? TO impact more than 2/3's the servers population currently, I think shows a lot.

I know this is a new move, kinks need to work out.....I see a lot of names I see playing here actively saying it is not enjoyable now for them and that is what bothers me.

There is hope (at least for me)

I used to ping from 50 to 90 max on previous server.

Yesterday was $#^@, I pinged from 150 to about 300, and I would lock up in game for 5 to 15 seconds (at least 3 or more times an hour) nothing on screen would move, and when it resumed I would be dead if something was near/attacking me. And I lost connection probably about twice an hour, having to close client and restart razor.

Today I am pinging 120 min 200 max, 185 average from a loop of 266 pings to server and 0% packet loss. I'm not quite as fast in game (at least in my mind) but I suffered no freezing issue, though I did have one desync.

Can't say I'm completely thrilled, but it's a hell of a lot better then yesterday. I can actually play now (if the last four straight hours tell the whole story)

You don't need to be a donator or subscriber to describe what this move did to your gameplay. I'd happily send in more money per month to help support a better location.

The bottom line is we have a lot of European players and from the people I have been talking with the 5000km move further west has created pings close and over 300ms.

my ping has settled down, it's averaging 120 from the northeast and has semi-frequent lag spikes over 200 which is an increase of about 80-90ms on average

The correct way to address ping complaints is not to belittle people complaining by mischaracterizing their complaints or to try to tell others what pings are playable... for them... them being a whole different person with different opinions, or to determine who has the right to complain or not complain on a free shard, or to tell others they should stop complaining because they had it worse 20 years ago on a dial-up connection. Doing this will make them think their opinions and experience are unimportant which will make people less likely to play. It will also risk turning this thread into a flame thread instead of an information thread for Chris to make the best decision.

Whether we like it or not, ping is a huge determinant for the vast majority of players and our current playerbase is tailored to players' latency to the old location. A new location will mean the playerbase changes and current players will either have to adapt to the change or stop playing. Ultima Online is now what it has always been, people with significantly better pings have an enormous advantage. While I think many players are here to relive their nostalgia, I'm not sure many people are willing to relive the same pings they had when they were on dial-up 20 years ago.

The most important players when determining a location are players in Europe, South America, and Northwest USA (Seattle, etc.) because their pings will be at the margin in which a playable ping becomes an unplayable ping when moving server locations. I do not think a loss of European players will be made up by players benefitting from this move (Hawaii, Australia, etc.). For this reason, I think a location like Atlanta, Georgia, would be optimal for our current playerbase, but free server hosting is free server hosting and DDOS attacks are far more likely to kill the playerbase than high pings.

    Long live UOR

My ping is better, on average, by about 30ms. I am in Vancouver, BC Canada. However I lose connection every 5-10 mins making things unplayable. When I lose connection it takes another 5-10 mins before I'm able to connect again. The UO client just hangs after putting in my account info. I didn't have this problem on the previous server and it is localized to UOR. I've left other services running on different machines, and the same machine, around the house to test it.

I'll gather some ping and trace route info to append to this post today.

There's a distinct difference between describing and complaining.

Providing info about your ping changes so Telamon has data to work with is just fine.

Whining about moving the server elsewhere or quitting because your ping increased is another story. It costs money to provide this service, and if you choose to not support this service monetarily, then you'll forgive me if it makes me think of the adage, "Beggars can't be choosers."
