So, in talking to a few others on IRC.. I'd like to make a suggestion for a new item... a portable forge! Think about it... you spend hours upon hours as a miner, digging and picking ore, running either back to your forge or hoping you don't piss someone off and get PKd using theirs. Who else mines daily? Who would love to see a portable forge of some sort? It could be a platinum reward at low cost, or even a GM skilled item.
Good poll! I don't know how (or which) era-accurate a portable forge is, but I have a couple of miner characters who would love this option. I'd say, if it were implemented, it would be better as a platinum reward. And/or perhaps stealable.
I'm not sure where I stand on this issue. On one hand it woud be IMMENSELY helpful to have. On the other, it would make strip mining an ease, and could mean the rich get richer, being able to drive the ingot price down, hurting the starting-off miner. I believe this was a bug in production servers and never meant to happen.
I'f someone wants to strip mine, this isn't going to cause that... there are tons of scripts out there that will do it much more effectively
If we add everything that would be nice to have, next thing you know you have the ability to be a gargoyle and imbue things with magic. UOR is era-specific for a reason. Adding stuff to make the game easier is a slippery slope. Ask the playable elves in elf village how fun it is to have power scrolls so you have to fit spellweaving, magery, taming, chivalry, samurai, ninja, lore, vet, eval, med onto a single character with 700 skill points and +120 power scrolls. Lets also add LRC armor so we dont need regs.
If it weighed a *lot* it might be a way to balance such an addition. Utilizing it would then require the risk of putting it down.
The hole in your theory... there are non-era specific items already in UOR... the identification tool that can be created in tinkering.. that wasn't in the original... many items aren't era-specific.
After all, the shard's tagline is "Renaissance/History perfected™" not "Renaissance as it was, warts and all".
I have been and will continue to be a miner, and I say no to portable forges. They did not exist in any era I played. Plus they are completely unnecessary.
I think it would be a good idea, but for 50-75 plat and NON BLESSED. If you die it can be looted off your body. I think the added risk would balance the added convenience, to keep it from being too OP. And maybe there's a way that they can set it to where you can't put it into a boat hold, so people can't just put it in a boat and go boat mining. Since things decay on decks, you'd have to keep it in your pack.
Boat mining is the only thing that a non-blessed portable forge is good for, but I agree...no supporting boat mining
Fair enough. I'm fine with some judicious changes from the original. Hell if we had the original it would include Trammel. But, again, I wouldn't make a habit of adding things just cause they would make the game easier. OSI fell in that trap and it spiraled out of control. The seal has been broken but no reason to let it become a flood of ninjas and elves. Also, be careful what you wish for. A thing that costs 50 plat and is not blessed? That will pretty much make it open season on miners. It will become the most dangerous profession in the game. Then again, that would drive up ingot prices so, there's that. One more thing to make it worse to play on a melee.
I like this idea, I don't see how it really changes anything other then an added convenience. Sadly there will be too many screaming tramel and it will die in the long list of great ideas that will never see the light of day.
