Near a moongate, close to a bank, as secluded as you can get, on a faction guard line, near a cool spot like some ruins, near a mountain?

Also, what type of house do you like best? Small and quaint and sink some plats into expansion deeds or big ol girthy place?

Sandstone brick to bring a little light into your house or dark and erie?

Or do you just live out of your bank box?

Just for fun post. I'm the type that gets complacent sometimes living in the same place for too long.

Personally, I like the entrance to a fort because of the size and symmetry but I wouldn't need all that extra space.

I do like 2 story villa's but prefer to really only use the downstairs/patio. Never really cared for the cramped upstairs portion.

About that symmetry.....the most annoying thing that's happened to me on UOR is finding out that the internal doors of a fort and the steps aren't symmetrical.

You have 2 tiles of steps to the west and 1 tile of steps to the east. It really makes my piss itch.

Anyway, my favourite house is the L Patio. Both the design and the layout is perfect IMO. Really fun to decorate and also super practical.

Location wise I don't like swamp or ice and I prefer it to be nearer a town so that I can run there with toons that don't have blessed books if needs be.

Least favourite house is a villa. It looks like a Disney house and has a weird footprint because of that flower box out front.

    Great thread!

Yeah - have to agree with @Earsnot on most of this - love the large patio. So secure if you want, and just looks like quintessential old school UO to me. Pop a forge out there as you're set.

I'm not a miner, but close to the mountains is great in my opinion.

Some great points. Never knew that about the fort. Messed around with one on test for a bit but never owned one. I may have to give deco on large patio a try. Was my favorite house 20ish years ago. Think I already have ideas. If I can only find one close to town since I enjoy using houses near a bank for rune libraries as well

Design: Each individual has different needs. I look for something that is easy to decorate, cozy, comfy and functional. The two story has plenty of room for my needs and I can dedicate one room to crafting. The large patio would be the best house if only it had a wall with a door instead of that row of counters. The counters really detract from the design in my opinion. All other buildings are either too small or too large. Castles and Keeps, though people want them, are really not good designs. I think they have a lot of wasted space. A better floor plan for these buildings would be nice.

The best vendor house for me is the stone workshop. Its very user friendly for all parties. For the merchant its convenient for vendor placement with plenty of warehouse storage upstairs. For the customer there is less chance of being trapped by thieves and pks, especially when you buy expensive items. This feature is also a plus for the merchant since it will attract more clients. Grab and go vendor shops are the best and the stone workshop or ground floor vendor only marble workshop set up are the best, but that's just my opinion.

Location: My preference for residential and vendor houses is close to towns and/or moongates, with Moonglow, Cove and Vesper being the ideal spots. Ocllo is too crowded with too many thieves, vendor traps, lag and aggravation not to mention expensive real estate. Yew is not far behind though a little bit better. Of course each person is different so location is really a very subjective thing. Live where you like it best. Mining houses are a little tricky. You can find a nice spot next to valorite and/or verite and find that its pk and/or mob infested. Its best to find a nice quiet spot for a small house where you can mine in peace. There are spots like this you just have to look for them carefully and when you do find one, don't talk about it and make sure to take the time to make a nice security wall for it. :)

I mainly live out of a villa. I have come to like the layout and quite enjoy it.

I like the North Mines area, where my villa is currently located. I gave it up once and regretted it for a long time until it was given back to me when the owner decided to leave uo. I will never give it up again.

My other favorite location in NW of Vesper, before the bridge to Minoc.

I currently have a L keep with 2 small stone towers in a clearing and it is awesome. I love the look of the stone buildings, towers, keeps etc. The large tower is a really neat design. If I could get a L tower with a CY area I would downgrade in a minute.
I completely agree about the wasted space in a keep especially that back right room that is only accessible from the second floor. I pmed Chris a while ago about a plat/copper reward of basically being able to customize interior walls only. I really want to be able to access the other first floor rooms without going up and down a level.

I like the Tudor look of the villa's, though the inside of them throws me off - mainly the stairwell. (these didn't exist when i played uo)
The large wood L shaped ones I have always liked, spacious rooms and the stairwell is nice.

    * I enjoy houses that aren't next to empty houses, or fun time boys with ladders and tables ascending into the heavens.
    * I enjoy houses that aren't next to one person that owns all of the rest of the surrounding houses.

I like unique terrain features more than anything else.
My game play would change depending on where I set up shop.

For now I live in the buildings that you think are owned by npcs.

I've always liked the large bricks and L-shapes. They are big enough to store what I want to store and get a little creative with decorating, but not so big that I have to accumulate a ton of stuff just to fill space. I prefer to have my house located a little off the beaten path, but generally I like being next to a mountain or the water.

Great thread. Amazing that so many of us have the same opinion.

For sure L patio for me as well .So nostalgic, great room for the price, simple and comfortable interior.

I also like the marble patio look and feel and features but never owned one.

The terrain between Beeper and Mimic is my favorite place! I had a small tower around there on every thread I have played. Back when seeds and plants where a thing my roof looked amazing.

I absolutely hate large keeps! I'm all about locking all my doors and not having to deal with table walls. Keeps allow you to walk all over even with all doors locked. L's, patio house and bricks are my favorite. I use lock downs and secures in front rooms and keep goods in back.
Location wise the battle miner in me loves mountain sides, though being able to quickly grab BODs is nice

Well I like the utility of a small stone tower. They are small enough that you can put them pretty much wherever the heck you want, but big enough to hold tons of items stacked in backpacks behind the table walls. I put my secure barrels on the front steps for quick dropoffs, and a super useful restock barrel that carries bulk regs, potions, instruments, barbed armor, huge runebook library. The heavy secure is what makes small house living so nice, and if you play UOR and don't have one, frankly I'm stunned and chalk it up to ignorance. The process for doing so is below.

Small stone towers are also nice because they are very secure and offer no sneaky LOS openings for pks and house killers. (Sandstones, small marbles, stone workshops, etc).

As far as layout goes, can't beat the large brick in my opinion. Lot of space, one floor, 2 back rooms connected to a big room. I've always loved L shapes too, and even villas are nice. Small stone towers are very versatile as well

Castle, on grass with a sea view.

Love the large courtyard and the double entrance. I'll go wild if courtyard lockdowns come back. Could release dragons in some boxed areas of grass and call it Dragon Castle!

Mind you, decorating is a bitch and very expensive, but with the right style you can make something amazing out of a castle

@El Horno Thanks! I have a small tower and I was thinking in which use for quick dropoff, secure metal chests was very big, but those barrels look nice there. Apart from barrels, another secure container which I can use at the entrance?

Also, how do you do for having a lot of Regs, pots, rune library, in one of them? I usually obtain the limit weight very quick with reagents.

    Thanks in advance!

Re-read my post for explicit directions on how to overcome that weight limit. One option for containers is to raise them up completely over the door so they are out of the way. SST has a 3 tile wide stairs at the entrance, so you can put 3 secure metal chests or w/e container you want up there, or a ton more if you invest some plat secure upgrades. I for instance keep my restock barrel way up high so not only can I access it from all adjacent tiles on the ground level(yellow lines), but I can access it from inside up on the roof.

Incredible. Thanks for the instructions. Looks like you can use the same tactic to overcome both the weight and item count limit?

Yes with 1 major stipulation, you cant add to the container without redoing it completely.
