While watching somebody's UO stream on twitch the other night, I noticed their frame rate was a lot smoother than mine. I found out they were using an application to increase frame rate, which I hadn't known was possible before given the game plays at what I believe is 17 FPS.

I did a little bit of searching and found FPS AutoPatcher v2.0 and started to play around with it. Although the running animation does seem a little bit goofy, I do find myself enjoying it. I did decide to do a little bit of research here on the forums though and found some controversy on the subject. Some said this application could be considered speed hacking, though others said that by itself it's harmless, and can only be considered speedhacking when combined with another application.

Although there were several opinions on the subject, I didn't manage to find (in only a few minutes of checking admittedly) an official response from @Chris to set the record straight. Increasing FPS does feel like a 'quality of life' improvement to me, and while I am beginning to like it - I certainly don't like it enough to risk being banned for being considered a cheater.

As I'm writing this, I am assuming a response similar to 'we have a list of approved 3rd party applications, and this one isn't on it', but I still feel compelled to reach out anyway. If the lawman says I'm considered a cheater and liable to get myself kicked off the server I'll remove it right now.

If you don't know how it works, don't download it, period.
You put yourself at risk with the excuse of pleading ignorant.
Especially be careful where you download, it could add a keylogger for all you know.

Hilarious how 1 person posts it somewhere and it became popular. Yet it was around years before that point.

This topic is about hacking the uo client. This violates the uo ren rules. If you admit to using it, you admit to hacking.
Regardless of what it does. At best you don't talk about it and it stays a gray area. At worst you're hacking.
Please note I never said the word 'cheat'.

I believe that, by itself, it’s no different than the “tree hack” or small dragon change. I can’t speak for the server though.

When you exploit it, it becomes a problem, but that takes an unapproved third party app to my knowledge.

I am also interested in this topic. I believe that once Chris said that an update to the UOR client is planned to allow for some additional content like new character slots. I wonder if this could be easily implemented as well.

While I appreciate your comment, I would rather not exist in a gray area. I am well aware of how this particular utility works, and quite comfortable with the source from where it was obtained. What I don't know is the official stance by the owner of the server on its use by their players.

This comment here mirrors my humble opinion. Technically those modifications he listed are 'UO hacks' as well, however they are purely visual in nature and do not necessarily give their users any particular edge over those that don't (although tiny dragons could arguably make people easier to target, but I digress). Same with using MODs to change the look and feel of health bars and things of that nature, but unless I am incorrect those are allowed.

If others feel comfortable with using similar utilities and keeping it hush in hopes that it doesn't get noticed I would never begrudge them from doing so, however that is not something that I personally am comfortable with. I would rather call myself out and have a finger wagged at me knowing that I'm trying to do the right thing.

It's quite different. The "tree hack", small dragons, brighter bags, etc -- that's modifying the art files and is client side only. It doesn't effect how the client and server communicate, just what you see as a player.

The classic client has a fixed framerate (80ms per frame) and the movement logic is tied to the frame rate logic so the FPS patcher inserts a DLL into the client's memory space altering the framerate. So if you then double the framerate, it tries to double the movement speed altering how it communicates with the server. Combined with other nefarious tools, a server without proper speedhack prevention would most likely suffer.

Also, those FPS mods, the DLL that it's injecting into the UO memory space? As far as I can tell, there is no source code available for it. I can find the code that injects the DLL, but not the contents of the DLL itself.
