The thieving perfected thread is full of tips and tricks from all the usual suspects. I read it first page to last when I started, and it was hugely helpful!
What optimistic said. See the last page on the thread. @BlackEye looted millions from a house using conventional thieving practices
The life of a thief is a unique one. No true guides exist that will tell you a best build, rotations, timing etc. It simply isnt how thieving is. The advice I give to every budding cut-purse is to hit the streets and ply your trade. Every thief does things slightly differently as they develop a style that works for them. Along the way, try things, pay attention to things. Above all else, I feel this is a bigger requirement than all other playstyles; have fun with your thief. If you are always tying time spent to profit as your gauge of 'success'... well... ...there's a long list of those idle once-were-rogues, they become Dragon Lords or spend their days joyless, watching structures slowly rot.
Somewhere on the forums somebody said something about getting 100 guard whacks under your belt. I always thought that was great advice.
1. set key use skill stealing 2. set key use skill stealing, last target 3. set key set last targert 4. Go steal everything (unfortunately a wall of stone key helps too) 5. have a blast, it's even more fun if you don't remember era accurate stealing, but we get what we can
Practice on getting player paperdolls/status bars quickly, as well as, getting their backpacks on "Last Object". Hold down your Last Object key waiting for them to come close to get in their bag. Set valuable items to "Last Target" and wait for an opportune moment to steal. Also, you can set valuable weapons from player paperdolls to "Last Target" and wait for them to cast a spell like Recall and snipe them mid-cast. The faster reaction, the more successful you'll be.
