How to be a Successful PK
    lordrice.jpg

Remember, a successful PK takes home loot, and the loot per hour is what counts. We're talking the bottomline people.
You can be a successful PK following 5 simple steps.
    1. Acquire horse.
    2. Acquire skills.
    3. Acquire inventory.
    4. Acquire target.
    5. Acquire target's loot.

We will go over each step of this because even though PKing is only 5 simple steps, there is more to it!

    STEP ONE: BUY A HORSE.
    Seriously, you need a mount.

    STEP TWO: ACQUIRE SKILLS.
You can't be a PK with sissy skills. Don't bother with Grandmaster Resist, train it to 90 and you've got plenty. Remember, this isn't a guide to "SUPER HAPPY PVPLAND" this is a guide on how to be a big scary PK and get away with it, no repercussions!

The ideal solo-PK is the following template. You will get the most kills and die the least. You have the ability to easily disappear and to scout screens and entire maps ahead of your prey.

    100 Magery
    100 Evaluating Intelligence
    100 Meditation
    100 Wrestling
    100 Hiding
    100 Tracking
    90 Resist
    10 Camping

Stats are totally up to you, just don't fuck it up.

The best part of this template is the fact that you can die in the worst stat loss ever, and be up and running within 15 hours all while earning platinum coins for being logged in! More on this ... now!

When you die in stat, you're going to have 85 of each skill (and less for resist.) Don't rage quit, don't log out even for a minute. That's what they want you to do. Instead, make a mockery of their kill by PKing them the very next day!

Get home. Res. Begin a macro that casts energy bolt on yourself while punching a second account. Have your punching bag healing both of you. Load up a third account and have him meteor swarm your PK. In your PK's macro, it should do energy bolt if mana allows for it, otherwise, have him do evaluating intelligence. Because you're fighting, meditation isn't going to work, so you might as well train a different skill. You will GM meditation passively.

Once you hit 100 wrestling, begin running a magery macro that uses meditation. Switch to casting Flamestrike on yourself after you're at 82 resist (doesn't matter what your magery is). After getting to 85 resist, begin casting summon spells or resurrection to GM your magery. At this point, you're 4x with 85 resist, 85 hiding, 85 tracking and sexy stats. You're ready to PK and it's been less than 15 hours since your demise.

In your free time, polish off hiding and tracking. I created a safe haven with boats to macro hiding on for 100% safety. You can do the same anywhere in the World. You can multi-task here by casting flamestrike on yourself while anytime you have the mana. This is a great way to train additional resist points while topping off hiding and tracking.

I also suggest abusing the fact that meteor swarm does one damage in a house. You can power train your resist well past 90 while topping off your tracking skill.

The best part? You spent less than 35k worth of assets on this death. Once you're a veteran PK, you'll never spend gold for dying, simple use a small shaving of your massive reagent piles. Even the potions, armor, and pouches you can loot off your victims will enough to never purchase from those pesky NPCs ever again.

    Fortify Your Home!
If you own a house with open space such as a keep, fortress, sandstone patio, marble workshops, and other houses... you probably know that stone ovens can block line of sight. Line the borders of your open space with ovens for added protection from outside threats.

    fortifyyourhome.jpg

    STEP THREE: ACQUIRE INVENTORY
Items You Must Carry to Succeed Against the World!

You'll want to sport a fine set of fortification or invulnerable leather. You won't be dying often, go ahead, indulge! While you're at it, grab 50 to 90 of each reagent, depending on how quickly you're likely to burn them.

Next, 2 runebooks - all your favorite Britannian and Lost Land PKing spots will do. Eventually you'll want to bless these runebooks with all the platinum you'll be earning from PKing.

    Potions
    • Greater Heal Potions - 12
    • Greater Cure Potions - 18
    • Greater Agility Potions - 3
    • Greater Strength Potions - 10
    • Greater Explosion Potions - 20
    • Total Refresh Potions - 15

The balance of potions are enough for all situations. If you need more than that between restocks, then you're doing something wrong. Get better or you'll die!

    Wands
    • Greater Heal Wand (min: 2 charges)
    • Lightning Wand (min: 7 charges)
    • Mana Drain Wand (min: 10 charges)
    • Fireball Wand (min: 5 charges)
    • Item ID Wand (min: 100 charges)

You better have a hotkey to equip each wand and a hotkey for "Use Item in Hand" - otherwise, you will forget to use them and die! (with exception to the ID wand which is purely there to cut down on the crap you loot)

    Tools of Escape
    • Pouches - 15 pouches
    • Footstools - 2
    • Communication Crystal - 10
    • Teleport Directional Macro
    • Auto-Target Rune/Runebook

    - Make sure you have a hotkey to blast a pouch, to drop a footstool to your feet, or to activate your comm crystal with gatebot responder!

    - Pouches as you know do a little bit of damage, allowing you to escape a paralyze. This shard is full of players who will call in their friends as quickly as possible to avoid having to fight 1v1. You must be prepared for the inevitable gank attempts and survive them. These are going to save your life a lot.

    - Footstools block movement, so it's best to record a razor macro which drops the footstool directly under your avatar, blocking those who follow you. Most people

Below are PRO TIPS for using footstools.
    PRO TIP 1:
Learn where to drop these - there are strategic places in every dungeon and within the world. It could be the difference of life and death!
PRO TIP 2: Add these to your Razor Display Counters so you can ensure you know your current count!

ULTRA SUPER PRO TIP: Add these to scavenger agent and never get footstool'd again (unless you're a fool and have an action delay active!)

    Have a Footstool Macro!
    Code:
    Assistant.Macros.LiftTypeAction|2910|1
    Assistant.Macros.DropRelLocAction|0|0|0
    Best Usages:

-Communication Crystals are the new guild chat for those who are out of the loop. Set up a house with a few runebooks, have a character with 100 Magery, Meditation, and Inteligence running a "listen and act" macro in Razor and plant a linked Communication Crystal nearby. Then, anytime you're in need of a lift, turn your PK's comm crystal on, say the magic word, and a gate will appear at one of your preset locations. It's not hard, I've even included a macro to get you started. You will have to change the Double Click Action to match your runebook.

The line looks like this in the Razor macro file:
    Assistant.Macros.DoubleClickAction|1079825969|3834

You will also need to look at the keywords and change the locations to match your current runebook.

NOTE: You MUST have a hotkey to activate and deactivate your PK's comm crystal or you'll burn the charges quickly or could accidentally activate your Gater if he hears any of the keywords in his macro.

    - Teleportation Macro is simple. Make a "target ground tile" macro (target relevant location) one in each direction that is 4 to 6 tiles away. Now, while running, cast teleport and hit one of the macros to jump in that direction. People rarely expect this and you will blow their mind with your ability to evade them. Pair this up with pouches and footstools and never get ganked again!

    When in Doubt, Recall Out!
Remember, you're a bad ass PK, you're not some POS "pvper" who is risking nothing by fighting you. You're a mountain man with a real handsome mug. PROTECT THAT MUG. There is no shame in recalling away when you can't beat someone in a timely matter. Why? Because you're a PK, you're not there to "PVP him" - you're farming humans and you're doing it for fortune and glory.

Use a Targeting macro. Simply cast recall then hit a hotkey for the following macro and you'll be off on your way, great to use when you're hauling ass down Destard's dragon pit.

    Code:
    Assistant.Macros.AbsoluteTargetAction|0|0|1077880759|65535|65535|0|3834
    // ^Target Runebook or Rune

BONUS: Here's a macro to help you farm humans better.
    Code:

    Assistant.Macros.WaitForTargetAction|1
    Assistant.Macros.TargetTypeAction|False|8198

This macro will use a butcher knife to slice up a human's corpse, and all their body parts - then, it spits out the bones in the same pattern each time, allowing you to leave your own "MO" and you'll have organs to bring home to the wife!

    STEP FOUR: ACQUIRE TARGET
You're a Grandmaster mother-fing Ranger and don't you forget it. Seriously, don't forget it or you've wasted 200 skill points.

Fire up UOAM unless you're an expert of Britannia. Take a look at the dungeon maps and you'll notice some are near each other. This means your Ranger skills will allow you to "see through walls." For example, go to Covetous's entrance near the fire columns and you can track the Covetous Dragon/Lake area. Head to the Ice Dungeons' white wyrm hallway, and you can track Shame's Blood elemental room.

Learn to use these tricks and have runebooks that go to great "tracking spots" that will allow you to gain the advantage over your targets.

    covetous-scout.jpg whitewyrms.jpg

PRO TIP: Track for monsters to find out if your target is farming with multiple dragons or nightmares.

Defeating tamers with multiple pets isn't always hard. Most tamers will try to escape. Many of those that try to fight you end up getting themselves killed by their own pets or because they feel invincible, but you know better, they are a squishy pile of organs just waiting to have your boots kicked through them!

    A WARNING: PvPers:
Don't get distracted by these clowns! They are going to try and waste your time, but remember, you're PKing, you don't have time to PVP with them and that makes them angry! Eventually you will find them hanging out at your house just dying to PVP with you. Don't do it! They are trying to waste your time.

    STEP FIVE: ACQUIRE TARGET'S LOOT
This one is tricky. What counts as their loot? Everything you can use! Believe it or not, I do not condone dry-looting unless you actually have a use for the item.

You're going to slay a lot of tamers in your life, so be ready to blade spirit and dispatch their pets every single time. This is how you will maintain a LORD status while being the most fearsome PK ever. After slaying their faul beasts, be sure to slice them up and take home the barbed leather as a souvenir. The poor sap might even buy bulk barbed leather from you some day on the forums (has happened to me several times LAWLS).

After acquiring all those heavy hides, ore, boards, ingots, fishsteaks, whatever... have a dropzone ready for them. A dropzone is a doorstep that has piles of locked down "stackable goods." You should have it set up for each type of leather, ingot, gold, boards, meat, empty bottles, and anything else you will get common oversized loot with.

There you have it, a total guide to PKing on UOR.

STEP SIX: GO THE EXTRA DISTANCE
Modded clients are allowed here, plenty of people use them. In fact, they might even increase the amount of gold per hour you can earn as a PK. We're in it for that bottomline, remember? Your mind is your limit!

    Advanced PKing Tactics.

Make Them Pay for Wasting Your Time.

There's nothing that bothers me more then when I arrive at the arctic ogre lords, only to find a mage blade spiriting these poor ogres. Worst of all, these mages will recall away after you attack them - giving you 2 minutes to "cool down" before you can move on to the next location. How dare they waste your time. PANDA HOUSE has developed a technique to make them regret leaving the battlefield!

As soon as the player recalls away, you must act quickly! Have a blue character with no meaningful skills and 10 strength on standby. Cast gate to your blue-toon, have him join you in the dungeon. Next, run him up to the blade spirit and then cast invisibility onto the ogre lords. The blade spirit will attack your toon, flagging that original player (while he's in town!) and add insult to injury, you'll be able to give that poor sap a murder count!

How's that for a good way to spend those 2 minutes waiting on your criminal flag to go away.

    PKing Helps In-Game Economies
Let's face it. Sometimes you get to a dungeon and slay a player, only to find out they just got there - this means little gold for you. To punish the player for being without gold, slaughter their horse. That's essentially taking 550 gold out of their bank account but more importantly, off the server. That's right, you're helping the server's economy now hot shot!

    Hyper Awareness
Remember when I said you're a Grandmaster Ranger? Well, every Grandmaster Ranger needs his own scouts and thanks to Telamon, you're allowed to run up to 3 accounts on this shard - if you have friends who play here (and even if they aren't involved with PKing), you can have them run scout-bots for you too!

    hyperaware.jpg

For my personal setup, I stack my 3 clients in such a way that I can view journals of each character, allowing me to be "hyper-aware" of who's where. Now remember, we're not talking about "ghosting" or "ghost-cams" because those are for weak and feeble PKs who don't want to risk any loss!

Now, to make this macro even better. I typically have my "scouts" be PK ready characters who are not in stat loss. This is so you can seize the moment if necessary! My scouts are just like the template suggested in the original post - hiding-tracker mages. My scouts run the following Razor macro, which will let you know every 10 seconds if they found someone, or if they failed to find anyone (the failure message is important because you'll know the macro is working)

Here's a macro to get you on your way. All your characters will need to be guilded for this to work.

    Code:
    !Loop
    Assistant.Macros.HotKeyAction|1044098|
    Assistant.Macros.WaitForGumpAction|2976808305|False|3
    Assistant.Macros.GumpResponseAction|4|0|0
    Assistant.Macros.PauseAction|00:00:01
    Assistant.Macros.IfAction|4|0|you see no evidence of
    Assistant.Macros.SpeechAction|13|52|3|ENU|2|16|17|THERE AINT NO BODY HERE
    Assistant.Macros.ElseAction
    Assistant.Macros.SpeechAction|13|52|3|ENU|0|FOUND SOMEONE
    Assistant.Macros.EndIfAction
    Assistant.Macros.PauseAction|00:00:10.5000000

Good Luck and Best Wishes from PANDA HOUSE!

Why the Agility potions? Why a fireball wand and a lightning wand?

+20 dex to make mind blast a little less painful

Lighting wanding runners and hurling purple potions can be fun. Fireball wand is really just a backup for extra charges.

Do you really find the teleportation macro helpful? Certainly a hotkey for that spell is great, and I guess running North and hitting the macro to teleport you South would be disorienting to a pursuer. But it also requires having 4 hotkeys to teleport. I also wonder why you choose 4 or 6 tiles, and not 8 or 10 or whatever the max distance is.

I've rarely used the teleport trick on UOR too much but yes, on some shards it's been viable (especially shards with no mounts). The teleport distance is up to you, I was having issues with Razor/UO client on larger distances, and you also need to be able to visually "count" the tiles to prevent a failed teleport due to a tile-blocker (tree, rock, NPC, etc)

Someone will have to take my place when I am gone. I am leaving UOR real soon and figured I would share some of my secrets - some of these tactics might be known by others but they definitely haven't shared them before. I've picked up quite a bit of knowledge being a true PK in UO since 1997.

Bummer to hear you're planning on leaving. If life's getting in the way, so be it. If due to boredom though, might I suggest choosing an alternate career path to see how you like it? Any dimension of the game, if you're only choosing one, is going to get stale after a while, I'd think. Especially if you've been doing it since 1997. I've found I'm not even close to being able to keep up with everything I want to try on this shard.

Definitely not a boredom factor. I clearly love collecting and stacking organs. I am going to be unable to login regularly and figured it would be a good way to break clean from UOR. When I'm ready for UO again, we'll see what shards exist at that point in time.

I am selling my assets here so I can "live out of my bank" - just incase UOR is still a good place to play when I have the time again.

Step 2 will take more time than I can devote. But I did get an appreciation for PKing that I never had. From now on I will kill my own horse when PKed even if it is spared!

Hmm I guess I was misunderstanding modded clients vs non-osi clients. I know about the tree removal, what some other mods?

The mods Chris and all are referring to are Art mods. There's a bunch floating around - the most common one I see here is changing the dragon sprites into little mini-dragons, to better see what's behind them. This involves patches to .mul files, and as far as I know is undetectable by server, since the client isn't sending back any different info, but just has modified instructions on how to draw things on your screen.

Still, this can get sketchy because you can make things like Cloaks much smaller so the obscure a much smaller space in someone's backpack. So those who use that item to help deter thieves (by putting their pouches and reagents and whatnot *under* the cloak) won't actually be doing anything helpful for themselves.

I think there are other types of client mods that can do blatant cheating type stuff, but as far as I know that would always involve sending information back to the server in a way that would be catchable. I.E. those programs that do some kind of cheating looting.

Well if you look at the pictures in this post I see a few mods. First look at the wall-less house. Then in the picture of panda's keep you will notice there are no ovens visible, instead there are these super attractive pillars. Lastly, where are all the stalactites?

In his shots, you also see a white wyrm modded to look like an NPC mage.

Also FWIW, stone ovens (pillars, in his client) don't really do much these days, now that many house-killing tactics have been nerfed. I guess they look cool if you mod the client like that, but if you mod the client with those house mods and blocker mods, you probably don't care about that anyways.
