They would just turn on you the minute you turned your back and go back to looking for their next mark.

The patch would come to be known as the "Why is Shadowjack wandering town naked and begging for gold" Patch.

I wonder if sea serpents should be considered reptiles, for the purposes of a Reptilian Death slayer. It's quite possible I didn't pay attention in Biology class though, and this is really wrong.

Or, potentially the Water Dissipation slayer could be used against sea serpents and krakens.

Is this grandfathering of old armor values up for debate? While I am prepared for it, this would mean new players joining the shard post patch would have a much steeper hill to climb in terms of getting into pvp here.

He clarified yesterday that it's really only metal armor that's getting worse. It's a non-issue because it's already trash and no one wears it except for show and occasional CTF flag running.

Yeah I'm kind of confused about this. In a few months, are we going to have veteran players with armor that is better than anything currently attainable to other players?

Other than that, glad to see all this work being done on melee combat. Good job.

Nope, only the base AR of a few types of armor will be grandfathered.

These changes are covered here >> http://uorforum.com/threads/patch-58-development-post.7653/#post-61157

The magical/exceptional/material bonuses for armor will change globally. The base AR of armor will not. New chain/ringmail/plate armor will have the new Base AR values.

    New ChainMail Tunic
    Before the patch
(28 Base AR) Made of Valorite Ore (+16AR) Exceptional (+8AR) = 52 Total AR
    After the patch
(23 Base AR) Made of Valorite Ore (+8AR) Exceptional (+12AR) = 43 Total AR

    Existing ChainMail Tunic (Grandfathered)
    Before the patch
(28 Base AR) Made of Valorite Ore (+16AR) Exceptional (+8AR)= 52 Total AR
    After the patch
(28 Base AR) Made of Valorite Ore (+8AR) Exceptional (+12AR)= 48 Total AR

These changes are all live on test center so everyone is welcome to go try them out for themselves.

How does higher AR not mean "better" than lower AR, base or otherwise?

Specifically, now that I've tested, how is a GM iron suit of plate armor that provides 48 AR, not better than a GM iron suit of plate armor that provides 43 AR (current on test)? I would have tested with Valorite but you don't have the ingots available in the testing area. Presently a Valorite plate suit of GM quality provides 64 AR. If only base AR changes, that would imply that the suit will provide 59 AR, post-patch, correct?

I don't think I'm alone in feeling like this only means metal armor will be even less useful than it presently is.

I am sure it will look a lot better when they lower the dex tax that is imposed when worn.

So am I reading this right: There will be less reason to wear anything other than barbed?

The only way I can see leaving GF armor as even remotely reasonable, would be to implement lower dex tax and leave the high tax on GF armor to make it worthless (or at least a significant trade-off)

Godric, that is a 100% accurate way to read this.

Also will there be a way to tell if a piece is GF without knowing all the base armor and modifiers? Will they be named differently or labeled in some way?

Arms Lore should say something like, "They don't make them like they used to." on new items.

Thanks for the clarification about modifiers being global and for the math example as it made the whole thing quite clear.

Since base leather armor is not changing, I would therefore assume that stashing grandfathered leather armor would be pointless. That's very reassuring at least. And I, for one, am pro dice roll based damage and lower bonuses for barbed, etc. So overall the change is welcomed by me.

However, in the case of plate, chain, and ring it does appear to me like the statement is true that grandfathered > new. I'm not terribly worried cause those items aren't that popular. But, if plate becomes viable, veteran hoarders will be busting out grandfathered armor for tournaments, ctf, etc. I'm assuming the grandfathering is being done for technical reasons? I could see how something like this could be messy and not worth the effort to fix. In which case, I'm not bothered cause I can't imagine it'll really cause people much grief. But if it were decided upon because the grandfathering solution was deemed better for the game than just changing all the existing armor as well... then I'd be curious what the reasoning is.

It is relevant. In the case of being attacked by a PK, armor serves to protect you against weapons. Your armor rating will change but so will the damage output of the PKs weapon.
