Yeah you will want it on the actual door tile, you can float it to be seen over the door using some stacked boxes or a deco tool. Being able to use it from both sides is ideal. Grats on the house.
It doesn't have to be a double door house does it? Because I don't think (maybe it's the same with double door houses too) there is a tile RIGHT on the threshold of the door, on tile is past it inside the house, one before it outside the house. Can't put the tables between the two to set it up, but I'm guessing you want it inside.
I usually stack two tables inside the door and then place a keyring with a bunch of five keys on top, as that's larger and easier to click on than a single key (also looks nicer in my opinion). This works on single and double door houses.

It can be done on any door, the door tile will be the tile you can walk on to once the door is open. In a small tower the door will appear to be south of its tile, but as an object it is occupying the tile. When its sharing the tile with the door the key-ring be able to be used the same from inside the house as well as outside. As others have stated any object stacked from the floor to raise the key-rings "Z" level will allow the key-ring to appear over the door vs being hidden behind it.
On a side note: I suggest creating macros for "I Ban Thee" and the skill Detect Hidden if you have not already.
