Those players, when they joined certainly didn't know the server was going to move. We were all enticed here in one way or another. Being sore about and vocalizing frustrations over this server location change by players who can no longer play here is normal. A player stating that their ping is now in an unplayable range and they think that sucks is normal, free or not. Those players have characters, items, homes, and lets not forget relationships that have abruptly come to an end. EFF you for denying their natural reaction.
Calling people whiners will not make this thread productive. It's like you reached for your water bucket and accidentally picked up your gasoline bucket. Think about it. When in any situation have you heard someone say "stop whining" and the other person actually responded with "oh, sorry, you're right"? We all want to play on this shard. Some people have different situations than others, but we all enjoy this place and part of the reason is the people. So how about we update with our ping info (if command line really is more useful to Chris, let's use that) and let people decide individually what is and isn't "playable" to them? If someone starts on a rant against Chris over this, then yeah they're being jerks about it, but if it's not an attack just scroll on by. Edit: VVVV yeah this? this is gasoline. I get you wanna defend Chris (not that anyone is ATTACKING Chris, no one's said anything putting him at fault that I've seen) but escalating arguments he has to scroll through to get useful information is not helpful either.
Just because something is normal or common doesn't mean it's correct. Lots of people smoke and we all know how terrible that is for you. If you want to vocalize your frustration over this change, feel free, but you damn well better be willing to do something about it, otherwise you're just whining for the sake of whining. The server was moved to its present location because: a) It was the best location for us due to the enhanced DDoS protection, and b) It was the best location for Telamon's wallet. Guess which one he put first? (Hint: it's the one I also put first.) Donations don't cover everything. Telamon puts his own money toward keeping this shard afloat, and for what? For people to complain about a free service being slightly less responsive? To that I say you're a bunch of ungrateful brats. If you want Telamon to have more options for hosting, then help him by opening your wallet and donating. I think you're being overly dramatic. No characters have been lost. No items missing. No homes have decayed. And certainly no relationships have "abruptly come to an end".
For me, when playing from home during peak hours, I've certainly seen an increase in lag and latency. I never did a ping test on the old server, mainly because I never needed to, so I don't have any "pre-move" hard numbers to go on.... My current averages are between 75-100 depending on where I am, what I'm doing. Like I said, I don't have any numbers from the old server, but from a strictly game experience point of view, I can definitely tell a difference. That being said, I dont' know that much about server and data hosting or DDOS security, but I have full faith in the abilities of the staff here to address any problems and find a mutually beneficial solution.
In my defense I've donated before but that was before I registered on the forums and have clocked enough hours since to easily justify another. I'm sure players appreciate the effort put into this shard and I frankly find it amazing that something like this has been running for 3+(?) years now. You might take people's frustrations over this matter as a testimony to the shard's quality
I'm not entirely sure it's not an issue with my connection, but my ping is closer to 200 today and I had several times where the client just...stopped a few times. yipes!
hey @Tsarkon how about i give u 100k ingame every month and u subscribe 5 bucks monthly thing for me, i dont have much cash irl rite now
That would be against the rules, @STAVROGIN , my friend. Perhaps you could visit Starbucks one fewer time each month instead.
Like what Stavrogin is saying he would like to donate but it is not easy for him. he is one who has a bad ping, not begging.
That's fine. Not everyone can afford to donate. I understand that, but again, where are you seeing that I'm implying people should go to another server?
Instead of turning this into Crossfire, why not just answer the question as "No, I don't want people to leave for another server"? I don't understand why this thread needs to keep degrading like this. Let me translate this page again like I did earlier: It's unfortunate that the new location doesn't seem to be working out for some people, particularly in Europe. But the free hosting offer was completely sensible to take, so we might have to wait a bit before any potential move. In the meantime you can help by donating here. Subscriptions are only $5 and you can do it via Paypal or Patreon. If we can reduce the stress on Chris's wallet, we have more chances to find a server location agreeable for everyone. Whether your ping got better or worse, please consider it.
Honestly it doesn't matter to me what other people choose to do with their money, but I felt that politely inviting people who may not know where/how to donate to do so was more constructive than calling people whiny or spoiled brats.
I still think most of you are missing the point of this thread, if you have gripes and issues about the server change make a different thread to address these things, this thread is designed for information collection and more specific ping times let's try and keep it on track so they can get the information they need. Old ping: 50-80 New ping 70-100 Chicago il
http://datacenters.level3.com/north-america/ Why exactly are none of the other data centers in North America suitable? I guess this may have come up and I missed it but in the OP it was said that there were only two data centers, just seeking clarification here.
Good news my ping last night in UK was avg 160 so I'm guessing as the techie guru's here (I'm not worthy) suggested it just needed time to bed in. Leave the server? your 'avin a larf! One question though for @Zyler seeing as west cost guys & gals now have an enormous advantage speed wise in the fishing competitions can you add some kind of handicap system for them, nothing too rash of course but as a suggestion maybe like ten press ups between each cast?
