Server Growth #2

First and foremost I want to say what's up to everyone and I hope your weekend has started off well and that it will remain that way!

I have to say I am a little bit bummed out about my last post; and that regardless of the enthusiasm it received; besides 2 other people nobody else went and made any other attempts.. (At least to my knowledge, so if you did and didn't post for help or anything.. well then yes.)

So, I am bumping around reddit and check the /r/ultimaonline as I try to do every day. All I fucking see is spam; and not only does it not help the current status of the game itself (All servers), it makes it discouraging to anyone looking to return. It's filled with players bashing other servers and shamelessly promoting their servers to the point that I wouldn't even check them out because it seems desperate. My last time doing this I was able to get a post that was about the fun I am having here and only slightly touched base the server I was playing.

I'm not saying you have to do this; but I feel like if everyone were to upload some screenshots of them and their guild, or them PKing/Res Killing new players (Because that's what UO is about baby) or the last fishing tournament, or a big game of CTF showing what this server and your groups/guilds are about is going to help alot. At this point, googling Ultima Online brings you to UOForever and Here, at least at the top of the search. And honestly, they are two different breeds for two different types of players. I played UOF briefly when it came out; and before I picked this server I tried them both out as well in their current state.
UOForever is not original UO.. It's main focus is new custom scripts and just added things that I personally didn't like.. Reminds me of a v2.0 of current OSI. So instead of bashing them, stress how different we are and even though there is an abundance of custom content here; I think most would believe it all sticks to the original roofs of Ultima in it's greatest Era.

Especially to players who don't donate (I have not yet, I do plan on it when I am in a better spot.. I live on my own and pay my own bills as well as help my grandparents financially) please just work on a gallery of you and your friends playing... Or you crafting and running your owny vendor shop.. Or aimlessly picking cotton (What my post was about) or cutting wood.. Advertising the server is only going to go SO far... Advertise the player-base and what YOU like to do in game.

I make it a priority to bump into (Young) players or just random people and talk to them; hear how they are liking/disliking the shard so much... And letting them know my guild [R^S] (Returning Souls) is looking for NEW and RETURNING players.... So we can group together and play while all trying to get set up... (Pretty much saying none of us are millionaires due to the fact we have handouts and or have afk macro ed on 3 accounts for 3 years for an abundance of platinum..)

I would really like everyone to go out of their way and contribute some how.. Even if its messaging your old friends on Steam... Making a post of Facebook... Making a post on Reddit (Again of you and your own personal community here.. Not a post bashing other servers or just promoting UOR.. WHY SHOULD THEY COME HERE?)

Either way, that's my rant.. Let's discuss this shiz guys

me personally? I played in the old days and quit some 15 years ago. it was a random Google search that led me to my old UO partner in crime Paddy O'Brien and his " Lost and Found" thread. he mentioned me in it , we reconnected and I've been back in ever since. I urge everyone to post in that thread the names of any old friends on the chance someone happens to fondly remember UO and Google searches old character names sure it's a remote chance but it DOES occasionally work .

I'm not into social media but i know it's the way of the world today , so I agree with your post about more aggressively using it

But anyway. I've been steadily replying on reddit myself, but I think a lot of people (self included)may be waiting for the new server to settle down before any large scale promotion.

As for the online/"online" issue that's always a thing and I sympathize a lot, the irc/forums can help with this (had some great adventures start from there) but it's not perfect.

I do know there are people working on solutions to some of these issues but still in planning stages. to the future of UOR! *chugs*

Who needs macro-laden character incubators just to play the last 20% of the game anyways!

As a newbie to this server still, I feel that the numbers are initially misleading in terms of player characters online and actual players playing the game, and that is a bit discouraging not only because it falsely inflates the number of players to appear bigger than it is, but I also see a lot of people using 2 or 3 characters simultaneously for things like fishing, so it tells me that many players prefer to just power gain their skills and money instead of interacting in the world with other players.

The whole 3 accounts per person completely promotes this sort of anti-social behavior because instead of making friends to help you gain skills, you can just use your own characters to gain off each other. Further, with 15 characters you can have basically every template all yourself that you want, so there is no need to become friends with anyone else - no need to befriend a blacksmith for armor/weapons, or a tailor, or a carpenter, etc... Then there is the added part where every *character* can own a house, so you can have a single established player owning 15 houses and all they do is macro their 3 characters all day. This is not what UO was about and it really sucks to see it as a new player.

That aside, I have met some great people thus far, and if it weren't for the likes of M3thmouth/Magoo, Paddy, Bamilus, and others, I doubt I would bother to stick around and put in effort to try and grow the community.

yeah there are zombie boring people hoarding land and collecting dust/welfare plat. that's why this place absolutely needs new people to survive.

Haha Katy was always my equal in shenanigans We both put our trusty 10yrold-ish chinese kid sidekick through so much, be it me "accidentally" dropping him with an arrow while sparring right before he got a chance to yell out NO KILL or giving him a hard time about his "mystrry box" vendor for 5k where he'd just put garbage in the boxes, or when she found his alt named Julia Phung whom he vehemently denied was him by saying "It Not Me" and running off. Poor kid constantly accused us of ruining his "UO LIFFE", but he was our Short Round and just delightful lol.

@M3THMOUTH I don't do the Reddit thing but I think putting the Theiving Perfected forum on there could possibly generate some interest. It's 15+ pages of stories/pics of epic thefts on this server.

Your enthusiasm is great, but from a forum account that's not even a month old, coming on with this attitude that you are "educating" existing players on promoting the server is not going to win you very much support. There's been a lot of effort spent over the years by many active players to get it to where it is today. Not everything has to morph into an internet crusade. All I see in your post is "I think" this..."I did" that..."I would really like"...this. A lot about you. So much "I".

The online player count does not and has not ever guaranteed that those players are all out running around town, chatting, stealing, being stolen from, trading, adventuring in dungeons, murdering, etc. People play the way want to, even if it means idling in their house. Perhaps spend less time worrying about how others choose to approach the game of UOR instead of complaining about how the lack of players in the world don't satisfy your needs.

I fully appreciate that you like this place (because it is indeed awesome), just perhaps need a bit of adjustment to a few of your expectations.

One observation I'd like to make. if some one is joining a free shard for a game nearly 20 years old, spends less then a month on the shard then finds one thing or another as a reason to not stay, was there really any thing we could have done? The people that do stay and play here are the ones that came with an open mind probably to relive a great game experience they had back in the day.
On top of that any one who looks for uo shards knows there are very few at the same lvl as this one and fewer still that use no real life money exchange systems.
UOR is also the classic hard mode. Every thing here has risk and reward and for some people they can't handle it.
All that being said I hope the server continues to grow and thrive.
