After that r/gaming post @M3THMOUTH made that got literally thousands of hits, I personally met upwards of 10 new folks who followed it here and logged in. My house used to be isolated and now I'm surrounded by new houses with folks training up in them. I'm in Japan so I assume there's more people during peak hours that I haven't run into. Considering that in scale to the population and that it happened while some other shards are in launch pr mode, I'd qualify it as a metaphorical ton. it's awesome at any rate. Some vets did indeed help in the comments both here and on reddit. also awesome. but there's no reason to stop working towards a better community (hint: this involves listening to new voices and old voices equally). it's "history perfected," not "history....eh, it'll do."
Seems to me that the only concern is the lack of players participating in some type of PvP activity. Otherwise, seems to be plenty of people enjoying the game (again) . Play styles are a personal choice and not all players are of the gregarious sort. Some enjoy sitting in their homes crafting, sorting, or decorating and what not (cheap therapy). I kind of think what would really help UO:R in a multitude of ways is for more of the existing players to contribute monetarily. There is no minimum donation. I see this as a way to help lift the burden off of Chris (somewhat) and provide more incentive for the staff to keep this shard as it is, a great place to relive our gaming youth. We already reap the benefits of a hard working staff, why wouldn't we show our appreciation in the only way we can? We enjoy some of the best rewards that can be found on any free server that i know of. The events are the best to be found. Everyone can participate (not just the PvP'ers). Although I think new players coming in is a great thing, I kind of like UO:R just the way it is. There are alot of things that players are doing in game right now that are a great benefit to the areas that are lacking in participation. Erza Scarlets PvP class was the best idea as far as getting more people interested in PvP. I was in that class and now all I want to do is run around looking for a fight! Anyway, this type of activity is what we need along with everything else the staff is already doing. People will come, try us out, and stay after they see for themselves what a class act UO:R already is. My 2 gold pieces...
Nice All I'm saying is that a majority of people I bump into stress the state of people AFK, and if you say it doesn't affect you then why not play a single player version of the game? It's beyond a "banksitting" problem. Just trying to point out that there are new, free ways to advertise that nobody is taking advantage of and to be honest if that stresses you out; fuck off. Not sitting here bashing people, just telling you that if you want to see this server continue to grow people need to step out of their comfort zones and show people this. Seems that the majority of the people mad here have been on private servers for along time (Myself included). Not everyone knows this type of thing is available; let alone for free. Sorry you have a new player than plans on remaining here for the long haul trying to bring some new faces in; because just as some of your replies show a couple of you are butt hurt old pricks who just need to bash something that you don't want to participate in? The thread Chris made is just as relevant, just doesn't seem anyone participates in it. Sorry for trying to bring players here for you guys to enjoy your server with. I hope your houses all drop.
people afk in ocllo because that's our hub most if not all of them don't have a house yet or are in young status, thus can't leave UO is the founding father of afk macroing character progression I kid about the "zombies in ocllo" but, all kidding aside, this looks to me as about as normal as any server with no anti-afk rules can look. I just wish some of these tardaloons wouldn't afk in the way. The game isn't necessarily in town anyway. I ran a gate bot out of Ocllo for a good long while in hopes to help players get out there and mix it up. It saw little use so, I've shut it down and am trying to reach my objectives in a new and different way. I will affirm and reiterate my earlier post in this thread. You want to help server growth? That's real easy. Just go play. Get the players and keep the players.
when did I say I deserve sympathy? Jesus man, I'm gonna keep doing what I can; just figured I would reach out to people who want to get involved. Butt hurt McGee over here christ, don't get involved? Your the one comparing and shit man. Just leave it and go back to work I feel the same way man, see ya on the field.
Guys you gotta understand. Blaise is a parody account that forgot its own programming and believes itself to be sentient. He'll just spew pedantic things and vague, robotlike insults at you, then give new people outdated advice on IRC. Purple llamas spawn "on the field" more often than him, and are more agreeable. Just don't worry about anything Blaise says. No one else does either.
You don't know what I do, Blaise, because you don't do anything but shitpost anymore. Every time I think you've added something constructive, it turns out to be a bumped post from 2014. And you really seriously think I'm an alt account? LMAO
I spent all morning looking for PVP. It turns out I was just looking in the wrong spot. Which one of you is posting on their red? I don't want a count on the forums.
This level of back-and-forth actually does bring back memories from the late 90's when I first played UO! Kidding aside, this argument really does nobody any good. It sounds like most people here have the best interest of the shard in mind, and tend to do things to help it grow and thrive. Even though I am pretty new to the server, I am working on a couple of things that I hope will help promote community in the game. It is the best that I can do at the moment to try and help - each person's capacity to help the server and methods to enact them are unique, and ultimately anything that makes the server healthier in terms of player-base is great.
I mentioned that your approach on educating the community might not be the ideal method, I think you see now what I was talking about. M3TH, I wasn't trying to attack your efforts I just saw this come out of your original posting: You showed up at a hopping party that was about four hours old, and while not directly invited, it was open to anyone who wanted to come hang out. You didn't bring beer because you don't have enough money, but you brought a few friends, but they don't have beer either. Within five minutes of arrival, you went and told the DJ his music sucked and he should play better stuff. You then started going up to people who were playing beer pong, informing them that beer pong sucks, and they should play quarters instead. And lastly, you decided the party needed your "help" so you started going around to all the partygoers and telling them to call their friends and get them to come to the party too (and to please bring some extra beer). You proceeded to head out into the neighborhood and started ringing every doorbell on the block, inviting the neighbors too, because why not? Maybe they have beer. That's how some will see your original post. Your intentions are good but lashing out and insulting people for telling you to reel it in a little shows you may need to develop some thicker skin if you're going to get into this internet promotion stuff. The UO community is pretty... what's the word... rabid?
I dunno much about social medial and Reddit advertising, but you know what works? Football, or as non-Mexican North Americans call it soccer, tournaments. I was watching the Euro Cup and since I already blew out one of my knees and cant play competitive sports anymore it reminded me of the bagball tournament here and that made me feel all tingly and in the mood to write run on sentences. So I reinstalled the client and made this wonderful contribution to this fantastic thread. @Blaise wanna buy 25 plat? I need to place a house or something. The innkeeper told me I had overstayed my welcome this morning
This could be a useful thread, but instead, sure, let's make another one all about Blaise. Not enough of THOSE on the forums! I upvoted your PSA on r/uo though. It's sitting pretty high right now, perhaps we can focus on that instead of... whatever this page is?
One easy fix... It seems like we need a AFK bank hut in Occlo(Maybe the bar?), and a sign on the real bank saying AFK macroing forbidden / will be moved to AFK hut. Maybe double clicking the sign will teleport you to the AFK hut (Young restricted?)? It is only logical all the new people AFK at the only bank in Occlo.
