(D%) never gave up and pushed me on a daily basis to check my armory's vaults.

But right, the thread was hijacked by the awesome tale. @Too Old For This ... I propose you should re-publish that tale in the Salty Dog Tavern.

I decided to finish this most unpleasant chores at once that's why I went to the guard post immediately. It took me about twenty minutes of brisk walk to cross all those bridges to get to the suburb where the guard post is located. The walk in the fresh air and birdsongs have cleared my mind from negative thoughts by the time of my arrival.

I stopped in front of heavy oak doors of the guard post and knocked with an iron hoop thrice. The doors rattled and the sound echoed in the empty room bouncing off the stone walls and floor. A young guard by the name Raphael in shining breastplate met me at the gates of the guard post.
    - Good day, Sir. Anything I can help you with?
    - Good day, Sir Raphael. I'm here to see lieutenant Godrick.
    - Well, his shift starts in an hour, but he always comes earlier, so you can wait for him, it won't take too long, if I can't help you Sir, of course.

I told my name to the young guard and stated my business. Mild interest appeared on his face and he looked at me with curiosity.

-"I am afraid, Sir, but only superiors have access to the evidence storage. Besides that, Sir Godric has made it clear that he wants to talk to you personally if you come. Please take a seat, if you want to wait for Sir Godric" - with these words he pointed at one of the four chairs, standing around a plain wooden table along the left wall of the spacious room.

At first I wanted to go home not willing to lose time waiting for Sir Godric, but on second thought I decided that this issue should be finished today and I can spend waiting time and satisfy my curiosity in a conversation with Raphael. So I took the kindly offered seat and invited the guard to take a seat in front of me. For a moment he was hesitating, but then curiosity took over and he joined me at the table.

    - Sir Raphael, I arrived to the city only today's morning and imagine my surprise when I received a message from the head of the Bank office Mr. Sullivan telling me of “some terrible accident” and asking to pay him a visit as soon as possible. He told me a terrifying story about how some time ago, he was attacked by his subordinate John Doe with my eminently accurate cleaver of vanquishing and that later there was an investigation of all this and it turned out that mister Doe was a bloody maniac responsible for the slaughter of many innocents. The news greatly troubled me, given that the instrument of crime could be my cleaver stored in the bank safe. Do you know any details of the incident, if we can say so?

He looked thoughtfully at me and drawled: "Weeeell ..... , as the investigation is over and you are a party indirectly affected by the actions of that murderer ...... I think I can tell you some of the details, although I do not know all of them as the investigation was conducted by Sir Godric himself."

    - This can take some time, would you like a cup of tea maybe?

I gladly agreed and after the hot tea was poured into the cups he continued:

    - That night, when John Doe was killed in the bank office we interrogated mister Sullivan after the healer finished with him. He told us that that evening he forgot something in the office (a present for his wife as far as I can remember) and returned to the bank to get it. From his words the bank was closed and there was no light inside, so he carefully sneaked inside the building and found mister Doe in the storage room, who was polishing a cleaver stolen from one on the clients' safes. I assume it was your item. When Mr. Sullivan discovered his presence he was attacked by John Doe. Seems that trying to fight back with a chair Mr. Sullivan managed to inflict a mortal head injury to John Doe. The banker also had head trauma and was bleeding heavily. Luckily he was able to appeal for guards help and Sir Godric answered the magical summoning immediately.

My companion blew on hot tea, took a sip, and then continued.

    - So after the banker's life was saved the healer has examined the body of John Doe and concluded that nothing could be done at that point, he was unable neither to establish a connection with that man's soul, nor revive him to life. It was a negligible chance anyway as it's common knowledge that only the avatars or few chosen personalities can be resurrected in their previous form, but Sir Godric is very meticulous, that's why he insisted on performing those rituals and only then stated the final death of the suspect.

    - After that Sir Godric looked through belongings of John Doe and found inter alia two keys, one of which was from his house, and the second one didn't fit any door, chest, safe or strongbox in the bank or in his house. This second key was on a twine on the corpse's neck beneath his shirt.

    - We searched the house of the criminal. It was a small neat bachelor house in the backwoods. We turned everything upside down in the house, but found nothing strange or that could shed light on the cause of the attack on Mr. Sullivan. Then Sir Godric found a diary and a rune nested between its pages on the table in plain view....

Your avatar? Saint Agnes, Lucia, Justina, or someone else? I'm always fascinated by the choices people make. Wylwrk's current one is great and BlackEye seems to have fun varying his :)
