No option for consistent gameplay and freedom to do what you want even if there are consequences.

Simply because anything else is just not Ultima.

Without the constant threat of PK's, thieves and other nefarious players, UO just isn't that exciting. The combat is pretty 'simple' against monsters, and the vast majority of PvM comes down to "all kill", fighting/stealing/killing other players is something done completely uniquely in UO and the reason why I love coming back.

Plus without Fel, UO becomes a glorified economy-simulator where players can farm/fish for hours without any real threat.

Felucca is a real world of Ultima, which is similar to reality, Felucca and Ultima are synonymous with me! The rest of the worlds are just plush fairy tales ...

I was once sorted into parts, I occasionally sort it out and it's real, it's part of real life! If there were several worlds on our favorite server for life, my house would be in Felucca !!!

    All of the above, especially:

I can't say it any better than it has already been said on our website:

"In UO, there is the common monster that everyone gets used to fighting. Battling the forces of evil can be fun for a while but you begin to grow bored with the intelligence of your opponents. Monsters in Ultima Online tend to get stuck behind rocks, they don't heal themselves or each other, you can't taunt them, etc, etc. Basically, they just aren't real enough. That is where we come in. The Bloodrock Clan is a guild of players that feel that playing the role of a monster is fun and could increase the fun of the people that fight us or just generally roleplay with us. We offer an advanced monster that will talk to you, taunt you, harrass you, bargain with you, and even attack you with fierce brutality. We are attempting to take the realism of Dungeons and Dragons, and bring it into an arcade-like world. No longer will you just walk and pin an orc behind a rock. Now you will see the orc run around the rock screaming war cries while getting ready to bury his axe into your torso. We are bringing realism where there formally wasn't any."

This is what has kept me around all these years, though I have to admit there is something therapeutic about coming home after a hard day, putting on some music and grinding in game. My preferred method of accomplishing this was traditional mining, which I better not start talking about lest I hijack the thread with a negative rant.

I've played other MMOs. MMOs, that were all about items, item spirale, quests, leveling and endcontent. Especially "endcontent" seems to be a topic, on which everyone seems to be concerned about. And yet there is Ultima Online - a nearly 20 year old game with antique graphics, without leveling, item spirale, a single quest and especially pre made endcontent. And it still wipes the floor with everything else out there (Eve Online might be an exception). There is no other game in which I feel a similiar risk and excitement.

And being back for a couple of weeks I already wonder why I wasted so much time with other games? The possibilities in Ultima Online seem endless. And beeing employed (and a dad) I am quite sure, that I could play for years and still not discover everything that UO has to offer.

By far the best game ever made! And by far my all time favorite game! (With one exception: It's hard to carry my desktop pc to the toilet; for "longer sessions" I always get back to Hearthstone/iPad) ;)

I played UO since open beta. I left when they started tweaking it beyond recognition. Since then I've played practically every MMO out there but, like @wylwrk said, they "all die cold and alone." I came across UOR's web page by accident and could not believe there was a shard that embodied UO's Golden Age. That, folks, included PvP. Although I'm not a PvP'r, I loved UO as it once was. I now consider myself a prodigal daughter who has come home. As long as the spirit of that Golden Age continues, this shard will always shine. Just my 2 gps ;)

I played UO since late OSI t2a era so ... for me I play on a fel server just because trammel literally destroyed UO for most of us from before that time. Even a weak PvP guild full of noobs had fun because of the risk. Then suddenly everything turned to a rick roll without the trolling. Not fun at all. For me, when I came back to UO, it was UOR, UO Cataclysm or UOGamers. I chose UOR.

To me it's like The Walking Dead television show. The zombies are only a problem in the beginning. While they are still there its now it's the other people who provide the real threat. Also, the real fun and/or excitement as friend or foe. When people HAVE to be friendly it isn't significant when they are.

UO monster bashing might be fun to many, but it's the interactions with the real people you tend to recall years later.

Although if someone reading this is like no way...I cor por'd the shit out of that harpy back in 98...more power to you.

    All the above!

I actually had an old old friend who kept begging me to come back to OSI about 6 months ago, that person ended up passing away, I kinda felt like shit not making the time to at least jump on uo for a bit with her. I decided to get back into it, just something I felt I should do.

I tried OSI , UOF, been playing since beta, and none of it felt right. Then out of sheer luck I messaged in the forums and saw Cynic post!!!! What are the odds, not only did we play together and we were pretty much inseparable and dominated Great Lakes, he even knew the friend who passed. So unfortunate for her passing, but she also reunited two old friends...

This server is by far the best. The community, the integrity of the server, how the staff has kept the server feeling so real from what I remember. I use to never ever do anything pvm related. I always pvped, this server is so interesting I try to do everything!!! Love it!!! But pvp is and always will be uo to me. :)
