    Boat Navigation

The goal of this guide is to ensure people have the necessary understanding of how boat navigation works on UO:Renaissance. The topics covered in this guide will include basic navigation commands and navigating the seas of Britannia through utilizing the map coordinate plotting system.

    Basic Navigation Commands

The following list of commands can be used to navigate any boat on UO:Renaissance.

    "Forward" or "Unfurl Sail"
    "Slow Forward"
    "Forward One"

    "Backward" or "Back"
    "Slow Backward"
    "Backward One"

    "Right" or "Drift Right"
    "Slow Right"
    "Right One"

    "Left" or "Drift Left"
    "Slow Left"
    "Left One"

    "Forward Right"
    "Slow Forward Right"
    "Forward Right One"

    "Forward Left"
    "
    Slow Forward Left"
    "Forward Left One"

    "Backward Right"
    "
    Slow Backward Right"
    "Backward Right One"

    "Backward Left"
    "Slow Backward Left"
    "Backward Left One"

    "Stop" or "Furl Sail"

    "Turn Around" or "Come About"

    "Turn Right" or "Starboard"

    "Turn Left" or "Port"

    Other Commands

    "Remove Name"

    "Set Name XXX"

    "Drop Anchor" or "Lower Anchor"

    "Raise Anchor" or "Hoist Anchor"

    Map Coordinate Plotting System

One feature that is commonly overlooked is the map coordinate plotting system for boat navigation. This system allows you to plot out a desired course on a map, either crafted by a cartographer, or purchased from a NPC mapmaker, then hand that map to your boat tiller man and he will navigate you to a desired location, through a series of plotted coordinates. This system may interest role players, or serious fisherman more than the casual boater, but it is a good system to have knowledge of incase you ever end up taking a long boat ride! This guide will now go over the process of plotting a desired course, giving the map to the tiller man and getting to the destination.

The following list of commands will be used to utilize this method.

"Start" (Starts the trip of your plotted course)

"Continue" (If your tiller man stops for an reason, this command will continue your plotted course)

"GoToX" (Where X is a specific waypoint #, will take you straight to a specific waypoint, then continue sequentially)

"Nav" (The tiller man will tell you which waypoint he is headed to)

"SingleX" (Where X is a specific waypoint #, will take you straight to a specific waypoint, then stop)

The first thing you will want to do is acquire a map of the world, or a local map of the area you wish to travel. These maps can be made by a cartographer, or purchased at a NPC mapmaker. NPC mapmakers are typically found in shops near town docks. Local maps will allow you to plot more detailed trips, simply because the map of the world is very hard to see exactly where you are placing map markers. For this example, we will be using a map of the world and will be traveling from Vesper docks to Dagger Isle.

Next, open the map and you will see "Plot Course" at the top. Click the text...

You will then be able to place markers on the map in sequential order, which represents your desired course. Once you have placed your makers in the desired locations, click on "Stop Plotting".

For this example, the following plot was generated to take me from Vesper docks to Dagger Isle with two waypoints.

Once you have developed your course plot, hand the map to the tiller man.

He gets a little excited when he receives a map!

Now, use the "Start" command, and the tiller man will have you on your way.

Upon arriving at your first waypoint, the tiller man will let you know he is on his way to the next one!

And finally, the tiller man will let you know when you have arrived at your destination.

Note: If at any point in your trip you hit something, the tiller man will automatically stop the boat. You will then have to manually move the boat around the obstacle and use the "Continue" command. This is the downside of this method, as it could be dangerous due to stray sea creatures. Obviously, going AFK using this method is highly dangerous.

Note: During any point of your trip, you can use the "GoToX" command, where X is the waypoint #, and the tiller man will ignore all other waypoints and take you directly to that waypoint, then continue sequentially.

Note: During any point of your trip, you can use the "SingleX" command, where X is the waypoint #, and the tiller man will ignore all other waypoints and take you directly to that waypoint, then stop.

Note: During any point of your trip, you can use the "Nav" command, and the tiller man will tell you what waypoint he is headed to.

You can also navigate the ship by pressing the "alt" key and using the directional arrow keys! :)

This isnt working for me...ALT+ arrows!

You don't need to write backwards, even if cool, back is enough.

Just found this. Never knew about the plotting system and remember a very long time ago wondering what the "Plot Course" scribble was at the top of the maps. This is awesome though. I have found myself in need of something like this during tournaments and this knowledge would have and will come in handy.
