Am I the only one who noobishly attacked a polymorphed mage running around as a chicken in town? I thought to myself, "I can kill chickens!" Yeah, we all know how that turned out...

Saw a guy named after an orc who would polymorph himself in the boneyard orc fort and wait for folks to attack him... thankfully I saw it happen before I did it...

OH! The orc mage moment... I know all my friends had that one. "But he looked like the other orcs!" OoOOoooooooooo

I actually like being a new player. Its how I build up a character's life history, shortage of gold, mistakes, natural slow development etc. For the more important ones I buy a book, call it "...'s diary", keep it in his backpack and write the history up in brief as thing happen in game. Can sometimes run to several volumes.

Yes! I was just asking in party chat the other day if anyone remembers when grizzly bears used to be red and everyone thought I was crazy.

Omg!!! I didn't know this until reading this just now. In my defense I used get regs in bulk from player vendors.

I attacked a nightmare ridden by a PKer head on with a wooden shield and a katana, while 20 people around us watched, and I was shouting geez it's just a horse.

I was a super noob in 97 and could barely step out of town without getting pk'd (that combat music started causing me to sweat when I'd hear it) but I have no specific memories.

That said when Seige opened up I convinced three RL buddies to join me there. We were farming in Covetous with our Newby chars when another guy walked in. He was really friendly and we all chatted as he told us about Seige and our templates and how to build them better. Thirty seconds after he left his red alt came in, obvious due to the name, murdering us all quite easily both outskilling us and knowing the best order to do it. He then took all our loots.

It was a valuable learning experience. Amusingly enough I saw him post on these forums last week. He has no idea that was a memory of Seige that we laugh about to this day!

Probably the funniest thing I have ever witnessed in all of my years of UO was someone else's newb moment. Atlantic was down for some reason so I made a char on Europa just to screw around and pass time. I went to the brit graveyard and some guy had a tamed dog named Ben to help him kill skeletons and zombies. Well at some point he must have accidentally targeted himself, because Ben proceeded to go rabid and start attacking him. So imagine hearing the angry dog sounds and this guy running around yelling "Stop Ben!" "Ben Stop!" "Stop it Ben!" and other variations of that, to no avail. Finally, I remember him running by me nearly dead, now yelling in all caps "KILL THE DOG!!!!"

I remember laughing so hard, being red in the face and tears coming out of my eyes. To this day , the plight of some poor noob and his once trusty-turned- batshit companion, Ben crack me up still.

So I used to go to my friends house and watch him faction fight on Catskills. The game was amazing so I went out and got it. I log in and my RL friend of many many years comes up to give me armor, plate. I put on what i could but wasn't strong enough for all of it. He then says "Give me you new player ticket and watch this"....

He ran away, and i was over encumbered.

I should have learned right quick - you don't trust anyone. But I didnt:

Many many many times I asked for gates to places (didn't have magery) and would end up in places like 3 tile island, LL rooms, etc.

I wonder why I still play hehe

I've had some real noob moments in game...only by that point I wasn't a noob.

Like stealing gold from someone's pet dragon at Ocllo bank, and mistakingly thinking I wasn't flagged (without checking), promptly hitting the bank/guard hotkey. *ughhhh*

Or forgetting to turn on criminal act query and then mistakingly casting greater heal on a thief instead of energy bolt. Guard-whacked again. Lost a few full runebooks from that little incident.

Back on Atlantic, my biggest noob moment was when I got the bright idea to macro unattended in Despise, level 4. I thought hey, it's late, I'm hidden, no one will find me. Well, a GM found me alright. That was my second temp ban for macroing afk. Oops...

I was just a young buck when I started in the T2A times... Ah the memories.

I created a "warlock" character (which was one of the premade classes available at the time) I think he had 50 swords and 50 magery. I named him Reaper because I had more edge than a hexagon back then.

I somehow found myself in Buc's on my first day and I really loved that town because all kinds of crazy battles were always going on there. It was awesome watching an energy vortex wreck like five guys. I was amazed.

I wanted in on the action, so I would cast blade spirits on all the newly resurrected people at the bank in buc's until finally I myself turned murderer. My friends were amazed that I turned red and I was proud of myself. Clearly only a real bad ass could go red in his first few hours of gameplay, I thought.

I didn't know what that even really meant until I got gaurd whacked at minoc and the healers wouldn't res me. Then I made a new character.

I remember mining at minoc like a huge stack of ore and then slowly dragging it in front of your character, dropping it on the ground, and walking and then picking it up again, trying desperately to reach that forge and then someone else would come and just jack your ore at the last second and smelt it after you spend ten minutes dragging it there.

Oh so many, where to begin.

Getting killed by a headless because I didn't know I couldn't spam bandages to heal multiple times at once.
Casting bladespirits in town to practice magery.
Dropping everything I had in a bag at the Blue Boar Inn to transfer between characters with players sitting right there.

    The list is... long.

When UO was close to release, I had made a coupel of friends through online worlds of that time that we all planned to work together and start a guild. First day, we all get the game and logged in and each set forth on their path to collecting the wealth needed to buy a small house. In about a day, the four of us reveled in the fact of attaining our goal. It was was such a sweet moment to have happen in the first 24 hours. We place our small house jsut south of the Vesper Inn. As it popped up on our screens, we were ever the excited bunch. As we were giving virtual high fives and not knowing anything about hosue security, a theif came by, stole the key from the guy who placed it and changed the locks to his new house while we sat outside in shock.

It was a cold cruel world...

I had a very hearty laugh at your misfortune.

I also remembering a guy coming by with his packy while I was mining in Minoc and agreed to hold ore for me when mine got too full. When I'd smelted so many ingots they were both full, a red in a tribal mask (the ones with the spikes on the side) came up and murdered me, my packy, and walked away with my new friend in tow! To this day, I'm still skiddish around those tribal masks...

The most newb thing I had ever done was taken the advice of newbs.

    My older bother and his friends had all told me tales of;
"If you leave town people will kill you, and take your shit"

As instructed I built the 50 magery / 50 resist (even though I was a warrior!)

So... yet another tale of starting in Yew.. the biggest guard zone. (never leave town they said)

I trained my mace and my parry on goats, deer, bears, panthers, birds - anything that moved... collected leather.. feathers..
I chopped wood for strength, as instructed... collected logs.. (the trips back to the bank... dear god..) I mean, I didn't want to just waste the materials!

Ran into a fellow outside a house with a vendor, he asked if i was using the logs.. "no" of course.. told him i had leather and feathers too.
Made a deal with the guy to harvest resources, basically.. I ended up being this dudes slave without even knowing it. (*doh!)
But he treated me well, he gave me nice armor and a new mace, and shield.. would pay me in gold for stacks of goods.

(*Should have made a tailor, carpenter or done something with a months worth of animal hide, feathers.. yes a month i spent in town-zone killing animals)
    (*wisps.. never attack wisps..)

My range had now expanded to the Orc fort.. (outside of town for the first time) to which I ran into a a guy wearing an orc helm.. I said "Hail" as one does..
He said "Por Ort Grav" then again.. "Por Ort Grav" But I was ready.. I could kill five goats at once! and a panther! (*such a hero)
*my stats were pretty good, from all the chopping and parry.
When he ran out of mana after his two lightning bolts he had nothing on me and my pet panther.

I killed a man that day... with mace in hand... holy smokes.. he had Gold!
He was killing things that dropped Gold! And i killed him! Leaving the guard zone wasn't as they had said!

From then on.. I killed things that dropped gold.

Then.. with the pet panthers i would kill people reg shopping in town, my friend would loot the regs.. we then started to train magery using the regs of those poor guys with 50 strength (or less) who couldn't handle the beat down of nasty cats, spending their hard earned gold on reagents..

    From naive slave to knave.
The difference your first player kill makes.

    My noob moment...
While wondering north of Britain looking for great harts I stumbled upon a great treasure; not just a regular pearl but a Black Pearl! Sombody must have tragically lost this and offering a huge bounty.

After an hour of searching I gave up on finding the original owner and remembered that there was a jeweler in town, time for a pay day! But what, jewelers don't buy black pearls?!?! After a week I finally found a buyer, the mage shop. My effort of work: 0.03 gp/hr.

Man, i feel like all the things that happened to others here happened to me at some point in my first month playing UO in 1998.

My newbie moment was starting my first character and not having any idea what the hell to make, so after reading the guidebook I thought it would be supper cool to have a blacksmith to name my own weapons and armor and hang out at the brit forge and make more gold than i could count. I also thought it would be cool if my character was an assassin and could poison enemies. I literally had no idea how all these skill worked together.

So my build was like Blacksmith, Mining, Fencing, Poisoning, Alchemy, Hiding, Cooking and Tactics or something like that. Well i found out real fast mining in Brit was a grind and took forever without macros and fighting other players for scraps of ore, i tried to raise blacksmith but had no idea what to make and never got higher than like 65 skill before giving up and declaring GM smith was impossible.

I started poisoning and i cant remember exactly how it happened but i ended up poisoning myself in the Brit Alchemy shop and didn't know how to cure myself. I thought it would just wear off after a few ticks, but then my health got below 20 and i panicked and started running around begging anyone that would listen to cure my and help. No one helped, instead they all just ROTFLMAO'd me and then looted by belongings.

I played for over 3 weeks before I finally figured out you could heal yourself with bandages or spells ( thought only potions and eating worked). I literally ran around with backpack full of cooked meat and would eat ever time i took damage in the forests. I remember thinking how hard the game was and that i would have to hide and wait 5 minutes for the food regen to bring me back to full health after i ran out of potions.

I don't know how i made it those first few weeks without rage quitting
