The AFK system works very well I think. There is one particular AFK gump though that is unnecessarily confusing. The one with 3 potions and 1 bottle is confusing to new folks. Yes, for veterans and when you don't have a timer looming over your head it's obvious that one is a bottle but I am wondering if others agree that it should be replaced with another "easier" one. The intent of the system is to prove you are there, not a puzzle to test your ability to disntinguish subtle differences in a small object. Just my 2 cents... Anyone else?
As a vet, I must even disagree that the vets get it right given time. I got bit by this one myself yesterday (it was not the same one posted by LanDarr a few weeks ago, though similar) after spending 30 seconds going "Uhhhhhhh WHICH ONE IS IT" then just crossing my fingers. I was wrong.
I also had four little potion bottles to choose from. They were very similar. I thought this was a test to see if you were afk, not how well you can see. I have very bad eyesite. I think the potion bottles should be removed. I agree with this system 100% but why have a few that are hard to choose from?
What about using prominent community members? "Which one is the real Catalin" with a lizard man, rat man, demon, and human! Ok I jest, but I do agree with the bottle. Thanks for addressing this Chris.
This is almost funny. I got the the damn thing wrong! I took a screenshot of it before i answered so I could post it here, I didn't expect to get it wrong but I did. The yellow jar on the left is wrong. I am guessing the purple bong looking thing is the right answer now? This one is really stupid. Now I have a bullshit count on my record when I was clearly not AFK. Dumb, dumb, dumb....
Got the same one last night but the 2 on the left were both purple bottle. Yes that one took a whole 45 seconds of contemplation because i had a lot to drink and smoke but come on, bottle, bottle, potion, bottle, hmmmmmmmm. If you clicked too fast thats one thing, but really no one should ever fail one of these if attended. For the record im far from a vet and one of these bottles ive never seen before.
Miller, glad you took a screenshot of that, that's crazy. I believe the potion is the one needing to be selected... but I only know that because I've seen this comparison (bottles/flasks versus potions) before. If I got this gump without that knowledge, I'd have probably picked the one on the way left as well. In any case, I'd wager Telamon will rectify that mark, since it sounds like we're all (him included) in agreement that this particular one is not working as intended.
Respectfully disagree. Some of us don't have the vision we once did, and some of these UO pixels are hard to discern from eachother. This isn't supposed to be a challenge, its a confirmation that you're a real human. Making it more difficult than a quick response defeats its purpose, and I feel you really should get off this mindset that anyone that complains about the AFK system is simply trying to make it defeatable. We're simply trying to help make it reasonable.
Thats a completely different argument though, if they are hard to see then making them bigger would solve the problem. I think the concern is that if changes start happening based on complaints then when will they end. I wholeheartedly agree that it should be reasonably easy to answer if attended, it shouldnt be a 'trick' question. Im not a computer savvy guy i use mine to surf, play and watch media but I am sure people are out there with coding skills that can come up with tricks. image recognizing third party software comes to mind, and mine is full of soccer news and philosophy, imagine what the programmer minds can come up with.
There are other solutions to fooling such 3rd party applications, and Chris has already enacted several. This does not justify something that cannot quickly be answered at a glance, nor is the possibility of someone doing something nefarious a reason to justify punishing the rest who are not. It is precisely the same argument -- the difficulty is absolutely not the issue here, nor should it be. They should be simple to answer, because the system at its core is already designed to thwart non-human answers. Treat arguments of their own merit; this is not related to what someone could potentially do. Nor is anyone asking for a change to the system here, they are simply asking for reasonable challenges. The fact that Chris already stated it will be remedied should let you know that this isn't just an idle "get rid of the afk system!" discussion.
Right, but I also said that it is simple to answer then you said its hard to see which are different concepts. I am not against removing anything or adding anything. The original point of this thread was to argue that a specific gump is too confusing or difficult. My point was that its not if you think about the gump for half a minute (you have 2, no rush). Then you said that the gump is difficult to discern because of physical reasons (not being able to see them well), not cognitive ones (not being able to figure out the right answer). To which I said, sure, if they are hard to see then lets make them bigger. For the record, I dont think these should be mind boggling puzzles either but I think they should be interesting enough that you have to take at least 20 seconds to think them over before selecting.
Absolutely absurd. You don't understand what this system is here for, if thats the case. This isn't the crafter/gatherer mini-game, this is simply an automation/human check. It should take you *NO MORE* than a 2 second glance to know which is correct; otherwise you are simply burdening the people who are being affected; you are not protecting against larger abuse. Also, you are absolutely incorrect that your summation that difficulty and visibility are two different things; the VERY REASON this discussion is happening is because these pixels are hard to discern from one another. This is *NOT* the point of the system, and my assertion that many of our eyes are not what they used to be was a further defense point of this same reason, NOT a new reason as you seem so insistent about. Seriously, this isn't the crafter mini-game, and quit acting like it should be. I don't want to have to solve a rubik's cube every time I want to mine, nor is it necessary for the AFK system to work as intended.
The OP says that the particular gump in question is confusing and should be made easier. I disagreed; bottle bottle potion bottle, couldnt be simpler. You said they are hard to see and distinguish, completely different. The former is a cognitive problem the one you are bringing is a physical one. If you cant distinguish the pixels that make a bottle from a potion you have a visual problem. Miller knew what each item was he just wasnt sure which one didnt belong. I dont think the afk gump is or should be a mini game i understand its sole purpose is to foil afk resource gathering by asking for human verification. I admit my use of the word "interesting" was misplaced. My two cents were that "really, its not THAT hard of a gump". I didn't say to keep it in, its obviously causing quite a frakas already so I have no qualms about its removal.
Yes, but your statements otherwise imply that "Its not THAT hard of a gump, and they SHOULD have difficulty and make you think." which seems to me to completely miss the mark of what this system is for. I still disagree about your 'cognitive vs visual' debate -- visual is part of cognizance, and 'difficult' is PURELY judged based on such visual analysis. They are one in the same; this gump is difficult BECAUSE the items are hard to discern from eachother. HOW difficult is irrelevant. It *SHOULDN'T BE* difficult.
I'm foiled yet again. Despite never explicitly contradicting it or even thinking about it I agree that they should not be difficult at all. I still stand by my "its not that hard" point but agree that the gump shouldn't be hard for anyone (never officially disagreed) and if some people have a problem with this particular one (or other 'hard' ones) then they should be removed. We cool bruh?
That example would be very, very difficult for any new player (or someone who simply hasn't seen every item graphic in the game and matched them with uses.) Making them bigger wouldn't help that problem. Some of us also have vision problems that aren't near-sightedness. You could make those graphics 4 times larger but if they were all bright blue I might not be able to tell them apart.
Just add an "ok/apply" button for after you make the selection (removes "accidental" clicks) Then make a "refresh" button that will display a new "captcha" if you don't know the answer. Problem solved.
