Okay like I said in an earlier post I played a thief for years, before tram and after. I've read the posts on here and seems majority of the server doesn't care about thieves/ gets pissy for thieves voicing their opinion.

I recently 7x gm my disarm thief + stealth, and start hitting the streets. I've had success, magic weapons, little bit of platinum
The system is so flawed compared to how it should be (used to be).
I understand guard whack is an occupational hazard , but a risk I have to take since the whole server sits afk in guard zone. Is it just me or is impossible to succcess steal and remain blue?

I'm just wondering if there are any plans to fix one of the best professions in ultima, or if it will remain nerfed just to keep all the rich banksitters happy?

**love the server and I won't give up on my thief, also if any other thieves want to run around together or start a guild I'd be so down for that

Yea guards are pretty sensitive, but they need line of sight.

You can use stone wall to your advantage and box the afk player, before committing the theft to reduce guard whack chance.

Or if you get lucky, and find a player who just got up from his/her computer for a few minutes and is in a random spot in town out of the LOS of guards.

Yes, you can steal without triggering guards even when you are in a NPC LOS. It's rare, but happens enough to be annoying. I've lost some small items to thieves in guard zones who pull off a successful "no guard" theft.

Also I meant, is it impossible to successfully steal and remain blue? With GM steal, every successful steal I've had I've went grey I just don't remember it being like that

It has been discussed many times. You are still right though, even if you didn't search the forum for earlier discussions: thieving here isn't anything like OSI oldschool times. It has been "perfected", which is the mission statement of UO:R. This means town stealing has been significantly nerfed (e.g. no trade window scam, huge amount of guards around banks, over-active NPCs calling guards). And to add to that, disarming in guard zones has been heavily nerfed recently too, because if you attack people in guard zones, you get much easier whacks now, and disarming can be considered an attack.

To sum it up, the thieving experience is different from what any OSI vet would expect. This isn't good for newcomers that want to relive pre-trammel UO. And it makes people create these kind of threads in the forum and starting discussions over and over again. But let me be clear, this isn't the OPs fault. When people start on a dedicated Renaissance shard they expect some things, and when these are completely different from what they remember, it's only natural to create these threads.

Apart from that, thieves here can still do huge heists. One of the most potent possibilities is house looting, which was already not possible during Renaissance on OSI afaik. As Crooked Warden already adviced above, it is best to start reading here for realizing what is possible and what not. But if you don't like this kind of new stealing opportunities, you will definitely miss some core era-accurate things and become frustated I guess.

PS @PotatoeHead: It's really not cool to start bashing on new players. Even if it's not real flaming and rather answering in cynical means... let's wait with that for his second week at least. :D

I think thieving is okay, it does have its quirks and you definitely need to have some finesse in your craft if you want to be successful.

Walking up to a random person at a bank and trying to lift something is a crude way to try and play the class.

Most things take observation and timing, something to be developed over the course of your exploits.

Eventually its not so much the items you take that will bring you satisfaction in playing the class but the proper/successful execution of your plan.

If we are to nit pick at something I would like to address house bans. I think they should be on a timer.

Thieves need to have access to areas where people gather; shops, homes, casinos ;) and other places people congregate.

Unfortunately a permanent ban from these type of establishments really limits our opportunities to play alongside/with the community.

Homeowners should definitely be able to ban a player, which should keep them on their toes always searching for the person in the shadows but it shouldn't be a one shot deal.

Sure if a thief is found they can be banned but the ban should only last, lets say a month of real time or game time. This gives the homeowner peace of mind for a time from that specific thief but they need to know that they don't get to just forget about them forever.

Especially since players are able to create macros to enter homes/doors, detect hidden and auto ban with Razor etc.

I don't think we need to make it easier for steals to be successful but I do think there shouldn't be a mechanic where an entire portion of the world can be shut off for a player forever. Our server population is only so big and people that do play tend to visit populated areas to play with others.

Expecting it to be exactly as it was on live is foolish.
Increasing weight, blessing, or marking items with a unstealable timeframe is a rushed/temp response to what's really the issue here.

That being, a player base' understanding of how the game works. Knowing bad can and will happen and not taking these acts personal and ranting about them on social media outside the game is a huge influencer on how stealing works here.

Example: thief steals completed zookeeper scroll : thief ostracized by victim and empathizers publicly outside game

Now what if as a result of all the "grief" because someone "spent hours and worked hard", the scroll was blessed in a patch?
I call that a foolish response but at the same time I get it. It would take a miracle to socially reform the victims and see it from the other player's point of view... which is simple, they were playing the game... period. Modding the process is easier, especially when you have a angry mob of "innocents" taking to the forums talking bad about your server and how unfair it is.

It's easy to overlook the work the thief put in to set up the mark and make way with the goods.

It's easier to vilify the people that play thieves/murderers.

On the flip side, to expect high success steals near a bank because that's the way it used to be, claim it's what you have to do because everyone afk's at the bank or their house, and you're the victim here, and it should be changed, and you take it to social media in an aggressive post... well shit man, you're doing the same thing the victims did in the scenario above.

Are there opportunities with rogue skills? Yes.
Do we know what they are? Yes

I wouldn't expect results though considering this place is a one man show and we treat him the way we do.
