Is this like when someone famous makes a boo boo and has to donate a tonne of stuff to charity? I agree with the idea but not the execution. I learned from @El Horno that if you give newbies things, they bail. Make them earn it and they stay. Put that money into a quest or something nifty for new players.
from all of the items i have given newbies , most of them have paid it forward already and helped out another newbie when they were able to help int he game (which was faster because they didnt have to work so hard at the beginning on getting a house via selling cloth, or killing newb monsters , and started working skills to where they can rake in the gold. i even play on a regular with alot of the people i have helped in the beginning , it opens up friendships also . Most of them i know today would drop what they are doing to come and help me with anything i ask also . Just A Game people , a few pixels here and there are not going to hurt the guys sitting on Millions LONG LIVE UOR Valhalla awaits us all
You give things away and help people for the sake of doing it because it's the right thing to do. It doesn't matter if they stay, leave, pay it forward, etc. Am I saying give away free Fort's, Ethy's, or blessed Runebooks? Of course not.
While I don't agree that is the "right thing to do" What is right or wrong about giving away stuff. Do it cause it makes YOU feel better... that's all that really matters
@Ragnar Lothbrok you and I seem to have a lot in common. Especially our interest in provocative web ads.... can we b frens? @Labeler keep up the kind work!
If anyone is giving away free Fort's, Ethy's, or blessed Runebooks, let me know as I am in need of all these things
I could very much use some gold, spent the last couple weeks GMing Animal Taming, and have nothing else as of yet.
bump= all i want is ppl register with proof of being please post your account age .. ill note it and distribute at later date.
It's a shame that some of us are going to spit on a good deed, but there's a little something to be said about efforts such as these. There's a wave of people wanting to do things for the new players, to make sure their generous actions are highly visible to the public, and in another recent case a contest in which players all had to basically beg a little to "win" a house. It's all seems a bit attention-seeking by the donor. There's people who get into IRC and see someone in need, send them a private message and help them get started without anyone else ever knowing, and there's that other type that makes sure all their actions are very clearly visible in the #renaissance channel. To each his own I suppose. I just see how incredibly sh*tty the established players get toward each other over literally anything, its just hard to take all the "new player love" serious knowing how these same donors potentially behave elsewhere. If you really want to help people, go linger around Ocllo. Drop down into the new player dungeon and look for indicators of the players fighting, such as the horseless one using a non-gm weapon while nearly dying to a harpy. Strike up some conversations, hunt with them a bit and get to know them, then start throwing them some assistance. That'd mean a whole lot more to a new player than just shoving items in their face and saying there ya go kid, now go change the world. Make a difference by helping some people without taking a full page-ad indicating what you did.
@ReZon has been running his new player housing for what? ...several years now? Are you saying because he advertises it in IRC regularly and has an ongoing post on this forum he is doing it for attention and others to say "He is a good guy"? As a once new player who took advantage of his generosity when I first came here, I find your opinion to be ridiculous.
There are two schools. Teach a man to fish, feed him for life. Give a man fish and he’ll be fed for the night. I’d rather teach a newbie how to excel at this game rather than spoonfeed them. I’m not shitting on anyone, just how I roll.
And here comes some of the expected backlash. @ReZon is providing a public service, and without it being advertised, nobody would know. Getting super-defensive over someone else's comments, err well nevermind, I forget where I am sometimes. Everyone can make their own assessment over who does what, what their intentions and motivations are, and the method they go about doing it. I originally posted mine without tagging more people and naming names. But since you have drug ReZon into this conversation, I personally feel he's a stand-up fella and one of the major reasons for UOR's continued success.
Yes @Merlin has some points, and yes some of these giveaways could be done in a more fun way, such as a player run quest.. it's easy to say these things and in practice it would take a lot of time to organise and execute. Something most of us here do not have. Publicly doing these giveaways raises PR (player relations) and awareness that people are here and want you to strive, become a player with maybe a great vendor, trades on forums or possibly be a force to be reckoned with on the PVP field, and most importantly, pass it forward... Help another new joiner, or a struggling one. I have had help myself, that first 20k that was given to me was a life saver for someone who hardly gets online to play.. but able to macro. Anyway, good on you @Labeler and the last guys who did this @Rextacy @Ragnar Lothbrok Lothbrok (sorry if I missed anyone and for hijacking this thread)
