Is there a reason why no one participates in Factions? What is the big thing stopping people from joining and taking over cities? Sounds like a blast.

There is no reason to play one. Factions are only truly viable if taking over control of the town included setting the tax rate on items. If resources prices stay fixed no matter what then why get on a faction char to take control of the town? Sorry @Chris, I strongly disagree with adding faction death robes and new colored horses will change anything.

    Thank you for the response.

The reason why factions seem so appealing to me, even if I'm the only one with this opinion, is the draw of taking over the map and having your name on those faction leader boards. Guilds/groups that war with each other is amazing PVP and provides (in my opinion from other games) a camaraderie that builds friendships and rivalries. I suspect Factions would be fun even if there was no income benefit via tax rates. In fact, from what I've gathered, it's extremely easy to earn gold on the shard anyway. Do we really need another method to earn gold by raising taxes?

Another question: Say that the tax rates can be set by a controlling faction. I would assume that groups would love to raise the taxes for income. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't people want to migrate to smaller towns and avoid the tax rates and thus creating ghost towns where the factions operate? Or am I way wrong? And to prevent something like that from happening, what kind of incentive would need to be in place for players to keep tax rates low?

In response to your question though: Because warring across cities and claiming territory with comrades would be dope AF

Looking forward to your answer :)

The tax money is not for personal gain. It is actually the ledger you use for buying guards and placing NPC's. But currently the ledger is jam packed with like 14 billion gold or some shit. Taxing the city is what makes faction worth doing. SUPPLY AND DEMAND!! Taxing a city of it resources will make people go to non faction towns to buy regs and resources. Thus making those areas super hard to buy regs and resources at, due to the amount of ppl wanting to buy them cheap. The factions controlling the towns don't care because they have faction vendors to buy there resources from. Thus creating an actual need to get on a faction char to control the sigils and the towns. Without this the "need" to faction is lost. We can buy resources and regs at virtually the same price. @Chris ^^^ this will fix factions.

Most pvpers are of the same mindset. So we just group up and go fight at events and over world. It might be streaky at times, but there was a bunch of group fighting at the cupid event. Same will go for other events. When the end result is pretty much the same, why baby sit sigils for 6 hours?

I hope you don't mind that I'm still asking you questions.

So the taxes are kept on this ledger and it doesn't go into the faction player's pockets, but it IS a gain for factions at the expense of non-participants, right? So it may not be gold, but it serves a similar function.

How did that happen? Was the gold simply not spent over the lifetime of the faction?

This is where I disagree. UO:R is unique because there are a lot of (for lack of a better term) "useless" things to do that people still participate in because it's fun and not because there is an explicit reward. I think that's an identifying trait of this game and why it has survived for so long.

I'll get into this in a second.

This is what I agree with you on. However, I disagree about the results.

I highly doubt this will be the result, despite the intentions. For one, I don't believe there is enough of a population. Out of the entire population on this shard, it needs to be divided between a variety of activities: 1.) Guilds cannot be part of factions because every member of the said guild would need to be a participant. It's essentially an ultimatum. 2.) People who simply don't like PvP won't participate (crafters or people who like exploring for example). 3.) PVM build players with only one char that prefer not to participate

And this is another point I disagree on. A need isn't required. As long as it's fun, people will participate.

So the question becomes: "Why aren't factions fun?" I believe your response in its most basic form is "There is no reward", though you go much further into it.

After all of that, the remaining population that wants to participate would need to be divided up between four factions If there is one dominant faction, I don't see there being enough willing participants to balance it out.

This is where I disagree with your supply and demand comment.

While there may be demand to lower taxes by participating in a different faction and war for lower taxes, I don't think there would be enough supply for it to be successful; that supply being a willing player base.

The final point I would like to make:

I would. I totally would. Because it's fun. It's a war. Warring groups was always a part of the original UO:R for me. I'm in the minority, sure, but even if I'm a single participant, it's still fun. I don't need a reward for it, whether it's money from a ledger or specific items

If we had more people who genuinely liked pvp like yourself this wouldn't be an issue, but the harsh reality is 95% of the players here NEED a reward to even participate because they are PvMers. (thats why you keep getting beat-around-the-bush responses)

Yeah, that's what I figured. It's a sad thing I think. Hopefully it will change in the future. @Larloch helped me reach that conclusion (which, by the way, thank you for answering my questions, I appreciate it)

I could care less about the town stuff but I've never had to do any city management. It sounds like if it ever gets fixed/refreshed it'll be a great part of it!

I just like people getting together for PvP, and faction skirmishes have been fun as of late!

The town stuff really drives the fun chokepoint goal oriented pvp-action though. That stuff is a lot of fun and a very different dynamic then the traditional open field fighting.

Maybe if we just DM @Chris a ton, @Chris will notice that we need something adjusted. @Chris could always task me with some coding for it, that way @Chris wouldn't have to put it on his workload. We all know @Chris is a busy person.

I think 2 hour sigil capture timer and then faction wide announcements in game when they are stolen. That way everyone knows its game time, they know where the action will be, and its not a stupid long amount of time that's unfeasible.
