This is at least 50% of available boat mining locations. Significant chunks of what remains are also blockaded, but at least it requires some attention and maintenance to keep it together. This takes 3 seconds every couple of weeks. This is the most egregious abuse of mechanics I have ever seen in this game, and that's saying something. Chevy Metal_4-22_20.16.jpg

It reminds me how much I hate that it is so safe in the seas. Probably, never gonna happen but boats should be sinkable...

I asked once if it was OK to block off the areas of the game. Most everyone said it was ok, so I just dont mine anymore from a boat. And those blocking it probably done either. Its just their own trammel. The same guys that complain of things being more trammel

I could easily see this as violating the “Discouraging Gameplay” rule. I’d open a ticket.

I think people are missing part of my point. Whoever put this boat there, won UO, according to the way some people play it. This is the UO dick move that all other UO dick moves aspire to. It is impossible to get around this boat without crossing the server line. You have to sail all the way across the mountains before you can get back to them, and you can't maneuver to the area from the other side either. One boat in the right place, and a few seconds every two weeks, is all it takes to completely control an area of the map. In this little way, this person has realized the true dream of some that play this game, which is to control how other people play the game. I christen this area "Dicktopia".

Go mine somewhere else. T2A is basically all boat mining areas.

This has been discussed a lot in the past, there's no problem here. One day they will not refresh it and you might be able to get it then. It's not much different than someone placing a blocker house in a clearing you want to place a fortress.

Eh, its not just one boat in place is there? I think u must cover the whole mountain range along the server line to cover that area. It's a great feature of the sandbox that UO is. Someone mentioned trammel, but this is a player sustained trammel and not by shard rules or admins, comparable to the "trammel" inside a house. The other day I stole a boat key and got into one of these locked areas, just as if had stolen a house key.

I am not saying anything about whether it should be or should not be allowed here, but...

I'm curious, was this allowed on OSI? Or did they move / remove the blocking boats? I remember from my memories seeing boats in waterways in towns, etc...

I have to agree with snap here, it's just like placing a blocker house.

The only argument you have here is that it's blocking such a large area of the map which cannot normally be done with housing.

"Oh, Cynic, you can have 15 houses - sure you can block such a large area with 15 houses"

Yes, you might be able to. However, if a house blocked a dungeon entrance or the entrance to a town I would believe that the house would be removed. Back in the day we used to have houses that just about hugged the entrance to Minax base. Blocker walls have now replaced those houses.

IMO this one boat doesn't do it. It might be preventing this area of the map for you but you can just find other mountains. The same can't be said for a dungeon or faction base.

    TL;DR: You're beat.

There's a no place zone in front of dungeons, and other areas to not allow houses to block movement. Also, house placement in itself doesnt allow placing the house right up against anything that blocks movement. Boats can be moved right up to the land tiles, and anywhere with enough water tiles to fit the boat. This does allow blocking in a manner that game code prevents with houses.
On retail servers, after Renaissance, when reporting a boat left unattended, blocking other boat movement, GM's would more oft than not, delete the blocking boat.
The principle here, is that it is strictly grief play, to leave a boat in such a bad blocking location, and take the time to make sure that it doesn't decay, nor is ever moved. This type of behavior should me addressed by admins, and the boat should be deleted.

Judging by the admin allowing the sale in that link and by policing the thread to suppress dissent it appears this sort of discouraging behavior is legal and sanctioned. That’s unfortunate but doesn’t affect me so eh. Lol

It's actually quite a bit different. Housing is designed to work that way, it's part of the game mechanics, and essentially how real estate works in real life. You are allowed, mechanically, to "own" land here, and all you have to do is be the first person to put a house there. You are not supposed to be able to cut off access to areas of the game map with a semi-permanent inanimate object. If a player wants to control other players access to resources that are designed to be free for anyone who takes the time to harvest them, they should have to actively do so. If I took my boat over to this area and I got attacked, I wouldn't have made a post about it. If I took my boat to this area and there were several people mining it already, I wouldn't have made a post about it. That's part of the game. This person is controlling access to a part of the map without even playing the game. The genius of this is not being properly appreciated. This is the best place to mine in the game. If this game was full of people that enjoyed mining, this would be a real issue.

There is a problem in this area with the server line. You are not allowed to cross back over it for the entire east/west stretch of the mountain range, which is a staggering amount of area. So this is a brilliant exploit of a glitch in the game. I don't remember if this problem existed in the original version.

I spent some time boating on OSI and never encountered blockades. It wouldn't have flown, the boats would be deleted and if the same people tried it again they would be banned or suspended. Those servers were full of people actively playing all the time, not people macroing in their houses. It wouldn't be one guy complaining about it. Boating is kind of boring really and there weren't lots of people doing it, and there's still not here. Accomplishing things on OSI was considerably more difficult, so everything had more value. One thing that is not understood, or ,more accurately, honestly acknowledged, is that this game was designed to be paid for monthly, and overseen, and constantly updated. It was not impossible to have multiple accounts, but because it cost money to do so, it was uncommon. It was not designed to be played this way. This isn't the first free shard I've played on, the one I used to play is dead now, because the endgame of allowing things like this to go unchecked results in a dead shard.

UO's biggest problem, and a problem that was never truly solved, but merely handled by creating Trammel and thus making nearly every future mmorpg into Trammel, is the lack of proper in game mechanics for dealing with criminal behavior. Out in the real world, the risk/reward ratio for being a pickpocket is such that only a very small percentage of people are pickpockets. In UO, the reward can be great, the risk is negligible. Stealing, in the mechanical sense, is extremely easy. Preventing stealing is not. What if their was a thief-trolling mechanic, like being able to make an ordinary item appear as a valuable item in your backpack when snooped. This item would be "rigged" in such a way that any attempt to steal it results in automatic guard whacking. That would be hilarious.

Looting a house is "fun", making your house theft proof is tedious. What if say, with a combination of GM carpentry or blacksmithy, magery, and inscription you could create a magic "floor" in any area of your property that can be recalled into, which would instantly perma-paralyze anyone who recalled into it that was not an owner or friend of the house. The only option they would have is /stuck. That would be hilarious.

What if the severed head of a red had significant value? What if the head of the most notorious and successful pk on this shard was worth a few million gold? I remember losing this specific fight with a red in the OSI days. He was in Destard and there were several blue players there, and he was fearlessly talking smack to everyone. So I attacked him, and I only lost because he was able to run across a server line at the last moment and use the delay to heal. If killing him had real value, he would have been instantly ganked the moment he appeared. Reds can be attacked with impunity, but people rarely pick fights with them because there is very little upside. What if their was?

The reason that the "one big rule" here is no afk resource gathering is because allowing that would result in people monopolizing resources and break the game completely. This person has used one boat and a game glitch to monopolize the best mining area in the game, and I think it's a boat too far.

Anyway, I didn't expect that pointing this boat out would make any real difference. I expected most people to defend it. I hope to make a full mental recovery from the trauma of not being able to access an area of a video game. :)

Funny, I feel like this is déjà vu. Some folks here seem to like taking issues like this to the "social courthouse" of the forum. If you believe this is breaking some rules, notify the administration - its really just that simple. They will let you know if your concern is valid by server rules or not, and you'll be able to come to terms with whatever the answer is. Otherwise it's all just pretty much complaining, isn't it?
