Hi, I'm Dynat. I have never played Ultima Online before ever. I once played the first 20 minutes of Ultima VIII: Pagan with a DOS emulator but I'm sure you will all agree that hardly counts. I've come here to flirt with the idea of finally trying the legendary mother of MMOs and I have to admit, I am worried. My first ever MMO experience was with Runescape back in 2003 when it still had its wonderful bright (blinding) classic colours. I was about 10-11 years old at the time and although I was a complete newb, I was hooked. After spending 2-3 years there I migrated over to the World of Warcraft which is perhaps a little more unlike UO than Runescape is? Regardless, I can safely say I am a slow learner when it comes to MMOs as I don't believe I understood either game well enough for the first year that I played them. I also toyed with various other MMOs but none really stuck and I found myself returning to either Runescape or WoW private servers that attempted to emulate the game during the era I enjoyed them at, something I'm sure you can all relate to. Then in 2014/2015 a friend from uni told me about the glory days he spent playing UO back in '98. He told me about things that I didn't realise ever existed in MMOs such as stealing from other players. I was very excited and gave it a good old google but as I expected, there existed the same old story of a big bad games company (EA) getting their hands on an amazing game (UO) and systematically destroying it over time, or so I read. As a result, I instead decided to watch, and even make a pledge toward a game in development called Legends of Aria (formerly Shards Online) as it aimed to revive the UO experience with a modern games engine and modern graphics while also reminding everyone that some of them were lead developers for UO. I've played LoA in both alpha and beta and am curious to see if the developers can actually pull it off. I would love to see it succeed but find myself mixed with some hope, and some doubt. I've come here in order to build somewhat of a comparison between the two and I can see some similarities but my god... I said I was worried at the start of my post and the reason behind that is because, as I have also mentioned, I am slow to learn MMOs. MMOs are big, but Ultima Online is ridiculous. The skills list alone manages to both excite and frighten me, the in-game menu's are endlessly nested with content and although I am yet to properly walk around and determine the scale of the map, I'm pretty sure its about as insane as I imagine. SO! with that all said, it is a pleasure to meet and discover this community, I look forward to meeting you in-game, if I can find my bearings enough to stick it out, and if you don't mind, may I ask? Do I even stand a chance?
Holy balls, a completely new player to UO. Gosh, i wish i could have my virginity again for this magical game. Yes, you have every chance. Please see the guides section, there's a particularly helpful youtube video for new players - lasts about 20 minutes - definitely worth watching. If you have nay questions or need in game help just post here or PM me!
Thanks Merlin , I appreciate the warm welcome. I have already begun to read through the plethora of new player guides and am impressed at how well put together it all is. It certainly is exciting being a first-timer, I just wish I had the opportunity to do it at the same time as everyone else. Nonetheless, I look forward to the challenge! Thanks for the tips
I had only played a few times back in 99 but had no real huge time playing before starting here. Yes you do stand a chance. Think this shard offers tons of guides that make it easy to train and players are pretty good at giving tips and such. Love all the possibilities this game offers
Yep. You'll be fine if you stick with it. As others have said the guides are great, just read up and follow them and you can get your feet wet. Remember that no setback is permanent and that dealing with those setbacks is part of the game. People are super friendly and helpful (to new players) and there is always someone willing to help if you need, just ask.
You got this homeboy! Like @merlin8666 suggested the guides are a great place to start, fill your boots with knowledge and learn from others experiences and mistakes and you'll be flying in no time my dude!
Welcome! I advise you to stay on Ocllo island for as long as you have the young title, there are a couple of starter dungeons and and special spawn areas for you to get to grips with the skills and train up. with 700 skill points to use and 49 different skills to choose from, each skill having a maximum level of 100 there are many combinations possible for your template. you will quickly learn that the tamers and mages are the best and easiest to get the golds and the melee (dexxer) are the cheapest to level. magery is used to travel around, every standard template will have it.. its no fun running from vesper to trinsic as a new player a couple of links to help you along the way.. most things you could need are here http://uorforum.com/threads/one-guide-to-rule-them-all-one-guide-to-find-them.682/ recommended first character template http://uorforum.com/threads/the-peacemaking-dexxer-and-you-a-guide.2897/
Yes. It's not as complicated as you think. I've played UO pretty consistently since it was released taking break only like every other year or so, and I've seen countless players who never touched UO before jump right in and become UO millionares in 3 months time. It's pretty consistent with how things work and people will be more than happy to answer your questions in the IRC channel. I suggest you ask any question you have, but ultimately make your own decision on what you want to do. Everyone is going to tell "make a bard first" or "get training a tamer so you can do champs" or whatever. But... you do you. That's the best way to play. As you go along figuring out new things you will get better and better, and you will figure out what YOU think is fun, it might not even be remotely related to farming, crafting, or whatever. Just go out there and try stuff out, and when you're stuck, only then ask for help. I also suggest you immediately get out of the [Young] program and go out and explore the map as early as possible. You don't need a completed "max level" (we call 7x GM) character to do it, and on the overworld, you're not really likely to find many murderers or anything like that nor will you really have anything of value to lose. You're going to get killed, probably by other people even. Just pay attention to how they did it and learn from it. If you don't understand how you died, just ask.
Welcome, Echoing what @snap dragon said, you are in a great position to experience this game. Don't worry about getting rich or powerful. go out and get killed by a mongbat (very low level monster) or a deer. All the people that are hooked have this story. wander around towns, use training dummies, just play the game and after some time has passed and you have a basic understanding (or think you do) find a guild and learn the other half of this game (politics). Also feel free to message me any time. Best of Luck
Welcome Dynat! This is great advice. As with most things in life, UO is all about the journey. Just grab a weapon, some bandages, and go. My favorite memories of UO are usually from times when I was under leveled and underprepared. I also signed up for the LoA beta and played for a few days. There is a community server “Legends of Ultima” trying to recreate UO down to the skills and even the map (after release). It’s a better representation of UO than the ‘vanilla’ LoA. If I see you around I’ll say Hi. Jorge
Wow... I am so envious of you. Getting to experience the magic of this game fresh, for the first time, in an "era" when the game was at it's absolute peak. My hope is you enjoy it as much as most others here. And I'll echo the other advice here - this is a game about experiences, not levels or points or gold. Grab some gear and go adventure. You'll end up dead a ton, but it is also the way to have a blast. Enjoy!!
Others have said it best already. You are in such a great place. This game is insane. For a million reasons.. And the depth is unmatched. Don't be in a rush. Just run around and have fun. Snap dragon gave great advice. While the young program is protective and can help get a bearing on things, it's also very restricting, and removes a lot of what UO is. By getting rid of it, you really experience the game. Have fun man, if you need any help or have any questions, never hesitate to send me a PM, I will help you any way I can.
Thanks everyone for the advice and warm welcomes, there is a lot to absorb but I guess that's the best thing about the sandbox experience after all. I can already tell this is the kind of community that I can get behind
You actually have an advantage. The game as it stands now is truthfully more advanced and better than it ever has been before.. With the integration of Razor its possible to reach more optimal results than the original game by itself. Perhaps those with less bad habits of the old game will flourish here. Either way, welcome to UO:R ! ps. My best advice is be patient.. when your frustrated with the game know when to walk away for a healthy few hour break.
Hi. For many years I ran a guild that brought in new players and integrated them into the game. From those players I learned a lot. I will try to relay the most important points here: 1.- This is a game. Have fun. The second you get frustrated you have lost. Delete the game. Walk away. 2.- You will die. A lot. A lot a lot. Learn to survive with a dagger and whatever newbied items (items that stay with you after death) you can carry. For me an invaluable newbied item is a pair of scissors. Cloth is easily gathered and a pair of scissors gets you bandages. Then you only need to scavange a few regs and you you’re golden because you can... 3.- Learn how to get back to your body. After death bodies take about 8 minutes to decay. That is plenty of time to go get ressed and find a set of “invisibility” reagents (ingredients you need to cast spells), precast invisibility, run to your body, and when you’re on it, target yourself. You will have 2 minutes to loot your body before the spell runs out. 4.- Not all red players (murderers) are assholes, nor all blue players saints. Talk to all of them. Make friends on both sides of the aisle, so to speak. 5.- Join a guild, not their politics. There are a couple of big active guilds right now, and most of them have a beef with the others. It’s like they’re the Crips vs. Bloods. Stay out of the hate, take everything with a grain of salt and read 1.- again. 6.- The map is not HUGE as you might expect. But human nature is. And THAT is what makes this game HUGE. The people, not the map. 7.- Make your own content. Set small reachable goals. Making your first 10k. GMing (getting a skill to 100 points) your first skill. Buying/placing your first small house (43k), etc. Pretty soon your goals will be ironmanning a tamer’s quest, or collecting 1,000 heads or filling bods for a valorite runic hammer (all very lofty goals). As opposed to what others have said, don’t read the guides. That is the lazy way in. Go out. Explore. Learn. Die. Learn from that death. Die again. Learn that you have not learned enough. Rinse and repeat.
