I'd like to suggest an improvement for both new and veteran players who have their characters griefed due to them showing up in the online player list.
Add profile option to hide character from online list on the main website. They'll still count as a +1 to the population but won't appear on the online player list.

I think this speaks for it self.
Reason: People are automating queries of the online player list on the main website so they can grief targeted player(s).
Even some players who aren't automating queries use the online list to find specific player(s) to grief.
I included the information that some have this automated because it's even taking this problem a step further to cheat the system. They can afk and be alerted without having to do anything in order to obtain this information.

Some may argue that it doesn't include the players location on the site. While this is true anyone who's played uo ren long enough knows where certain people hang out at.
    ---
off topic: as if ghosting, stealthing and tracking wasn't enough.

Automating queries of the online list? There must be a story to be told?

It's nothing new, people have been using online player lists to track all sorts of activity/information, there was even a shard where a dedicated player stored all the unique player ID's and made alerts whenever someone used a name change deed or passed some criteria (e.g. 4 murder counts).

It's kind of a problem with giving players access to this much information, eventually someone will come around and find a way to abuse it.

IS this actually a problem? are people actually going around, botting when people log in, and then griefing them to the point they can't play?

Theres so many solutions to this, if you leave your chars logged in, then people can't tell when your online or offline. If you have multiple houses, people won't know which house to look for you at. If you don't always farm/hit the same spots, people wont know where you are.

There are also multiple ways to tell if someone is active. you can also see when someone is on the forums, IRC or when they are active in discord. I know a theif who would tell me he would pick houses to camp/stealth in based off of who just signed onto IRC.

If it has been taken to the extreme where there is a problem, then yea lets fix it. but has it really been used to that extreme?

I'm not against more privacy options when it comes to protecting players. But other than reverse engineering name changes and some other edge cases I am not sure of the harm of this information?

I think most claims of the information use get overblown. Like a player simply having a bot that says "there are 9 red players online" in discord based on a simple review of the online player list.

This list also helps counter the claim that always gets leveled at servers by other servers that players are fake. Renaissance is the only server I am aware of (larger ones) that shows this list online.

Meanwhile you have other . . more questionable servers claiming 700 online, with only 4 forum posts in the last 48 hours.

This in reference to that rumor I heard about a certain server having "players" online hanging out in green acres? lol

    https://github.com/greeduomacro/UO-...rd/Scripts/Engines/RemoteAdmin/Packets.cs#L80

Not really a rumor, pretty much every leak of code from a certain server shows either a static value aplied to the online count, or their most recent tactic of a player multiplier (online = online * 1.75)

At one point the code went rouge and they reported 19,532 players online.

The Irony of this is UO Renaissance, and our website are the barometers for success of free servers. So our "competition" simply takes our true data, and ensures that their "players online" are always higher than UOR's.

Other servers aside. The information on the UOR website is for our players and their enjoyment. The stats build confidence in the server in a sea of . . misleading information from other places and give the players a sense of pride in the place.

We have over the years taken steps to protect as much of our players information as possible. And down the road once the CuB system is finished I do have plans for a player profile revamp and a complete removal of the player ID tracking on the website to better hide player identities. While not losing any functionality that people enjoy.

@Chris You yourself know that people are using a ghost + script + discord bot to upload screenshots of people it detects in game. To alert PKs of other players.
    They're also...
Auto alerting on discord if their living character see's another person they're looking for.
Auto searching online players, on the website.
Using IRC to alert if a certain user comes online. *another problem but easily avoidable by not getting on irc

These aren't overblown, these real things that PKs exploit and cheat on your shard in an effort to grief and attack other players.
Not everyone can leave their character's logged in 24/7.

And I know for a fact you told people to cut it out with the first thing but it's still being used. Even with living characters in dungeons who look innocent and harmless.
Yes they are using living characters in place of ghosts in dungeons. Farming is just a side effect. But they get a nice screenshot and message on their discord when player xyz shows up.

I'll likely be personally attacked for this.

SoF and Anarchy. There I said it.

You may both proceed with attacking my character both on the forums and in game. Calling me names and trying to silence me with your zerg of posts.

Guess letting me on SoF discord wasn't the best idea.

Also to go further Anarchy has not been active in over a week I really don't think they would go as far as to use a discord bot to tell them when a player is active

I dunno wtf “auto searching” is but I do in fact look up players on the website! As for the bots you are a day late and a dollar short this has already been hashed out.

If you're not going to read the whole thread, don't comment.

I'd also like to remind people what this thread is about. See the title.

This is not a personal attack nor is it about any of the other cheats some members of this community choose to use. I added additional information to put the sense of severity in chris's mind that it's not something to shrug off as past examples and present examples are clear that some people think cheating is okay.

I simply want a way to hide my character from the online player list. So I can stop being griefed every damn time I log in.
I've asked to be left alone yet they continue to harass me in game and on the forums. It's rather childish.

You included both sof and anarchy as "griefing" you but no one from Sof is doing that and the whole anarchy crew has been mia for some time. Sorry but who is griefing you? Specifically?
