I'm fairly new to shard and have enjoyed it so far but one thing that worries me. Except for some pkers all I see everywhere is tamers. Not much pvp unless you count all kill.

    all kill no skill ;)

Seriously though. There are dexxers, bards and Mages. They're all highly viable templates to play on their own.
The reason you see so many tamers is because this game is 20+ years old and everyone knows the lazy meta is to be a tamer.

There are also a lot of fishermen and crafters but you don't see them.

This is why I have so far refused to build one. I have built a Bard/Mage and Bard/Dexxer instead. I am sure I will eventually cave and make a tamer, but I plan to work them up by hand as far as time allows.

Tamers are mainly used for overland farming. Dexxers and bard combos can be seen too, but most often they are used for closed instances (so called AMIBs, xmas scrolls and level 7 treasure maps). PvP is kind of VERY slow right now, we lost some large pvp guilds recently. But I am sure, it can be revitalized with proper input by new players *stares at OP*.

As a thief who watches many player's movements and house activity in general, I can tell you, that alot is going on in our world behind the curtains! Activity in IRC, forums and at farming hotspots is just the visible tip of the iceberg.

Lol I'm trying. 80% of the time people recall away. If I do get a kill a lot of times 1-2 tamers recall in with all kill and then I'm toast

This is why i have tamers!

I enjoy my dexxer more, and for a few weeks at Halloween he was all i played! But running around day to day with a slayer weapon i cannot afford to replace is pretty risky.

Thus why i spend the majority of my time on a tamer or a provo mage where i only really risk losing a reg pouch.

Give me a shout if you want some pvp. If I am not around, I can easily introduce you to like minded people who want to pvp.
But you're right, this is mainly an "all kill" shard. Play your cards right, and you'll wreck tamers.

I avoided the tamer thing for a time - I had never played at any other point in my UO career.

There's just so much content that is otherwise inaccessible without either a tamer or a larger group of people that I eventually caved. It's not my favorite template to play, though it is the most lucrative in terms of farming.

Think of it as a pvm server with felluca. Pvp is not the owners priority

@merlin8666 is the only one that has gotten close to dropping one of my tamers without being in a zerg. So any tips you can get from that dude, I'd take.

    You wanna pk a tamer?
Stop them from gating and use their pets as a liability.
So long as the pets don't all sync drop on you. You can harass the pets till the player has to aid them, then the player is open to attack.

If they get a gate off, hit one of their pets with a magic arrow. It'll start walking towards you unless given a command.
So the tamer has to keep mashing the all follow command. Otherwise they have a pet left behind.
Now I'm not saying kill people's pets. But the player has to come back for it. Be ready to smash them when they do.

    info provided by SWIM.

You are my Moby Dick. One day, one day.

Just drop me a pm if you want some tips or introductions to other pvpers.

@Baler poison, not magic arrow, is the way to separate pets from owners.

yeah poison works too, anything that is negative. Poison has the benefits of damage ticks. Magic Arrow is just the first spell that came to mind.
Such as a magic arrow wand macro. :)

Wish factions was more active. Never really had a char that could pvp well on a production shard, but had a blast with factions on OSI test center back in the day. Consensual large scale pvp far more interesting than a couple PKs combing a dungeon to instakill a bard.

Short answer to your question. Yes, almost everybody has at least one tamer.

Now, almost everybody has many other templates too. With 3 accounts, and 15 slots, you can make pretty much everything.

But yes, there is much tamer action.
