    Hi,

just returning to UO and I wanted to ask about ways to keep earning decent gold while having fun playing as a mage?
Are there areas that give decent loot for a starting caster for example? Can I go exploring some cave or are there areas with monsters that give gold and are not zapping me with lightning bolts all the time?

I know there are guides to earn gold very efficiently but im not looking to go chopping wood or mining.

I want to basicly kill and loot my way to some gold and keep me in reagents. Perhaps hunting monsters that can drop some new spells too.
Not looking to buy a castle (yet) just to get some decent loot and earn some gold & items while adventuring and exploring.

    Thanks.

Are all the npc quests just "take me to this city" or are there some faster ones too that give decent gold?

Have you considered adding taming? Farming with a couple dragons makes that reg money pretty quick. My provo/tamer/mage is bankrolling all my other characters.

Im thinking that I would need to get a tamer to a high lavel to be able to tame a dragon. For now Im looking to enjoy the game more as fast as I can (meaning not having to level another character to support my mage).
I do use boring mechanics to train evaluating intelligence for example.

But I would like to use my mage to earn enough to keep me in reagents atleast and maybe so much so I can train inscribing and magery.

Try the ogre Lord's in despise, or Arctic ogres in ice dungeon or t2a these can be killed with blade spirits. Faster farming if you add provo.

Beware these can spawn a caster boss, in which case you should go somewhere else. And these are also checked regularly by pks.

Easiest/cheapest early game money maker. This can fund all other templates that you want to build.

FYI this was my first char which I later added taming to.

Thanks for the tips. Right now though my mages magery is just above 50 and I also dont even have higher level spells than 4th tier so no blade spirits for me yet.
I quess I would need to get my hand on a full spellbook from somewhere (no idea how much that would cost in the server).

Also im really out of money so I cannot even build a character with 700 skills as I only have less than the starting money of 1000 gold. So thats also why I asked about earning some cash since Im talking about thousands here not tens or hundreds of thousands.

If you decide to go the provo route, and you are still in young status, you can farm from the pirate camp on the south west side of Ocllo. They won't target you unless you aggro on them, this makes it easy to just start a bunch of fights, sit back and collect gold. This works with all enemies, the pirate camp just has a bunch of equal enemies that spawn quickly.

Farming dragons and wyrms is profitable. Just be ready for pvp or to bug out, especially around the latter. You can make decent gold farming daemons too. You'd better have high magery, eval, resist, etc. though.

I second the npc gating suggestion as well. If you're the only one doing it atm and you hit every town, you could make close to 10k in an hour or so. It can be tedious for sure to get everyone, but still not quite a grind.

I would try gating but I only have the starting spells currenty. Not sure if I can get more spells of higher level in Britain. I dont have the gate spell unfortunately.
I would also need the bind or what was the name again to make gate runes to different cities.

Are there any player shopkeepers in towns that sell spellbooks for example or do I have to find a player owned house with a npc that sells spellbooks/spells.

Im at so starting situation and have not played the game in 15+ years really. :p

Provoking monsters to fight each other and collecting the loot. If you have high enough provo, you can start farming anything really. It can be hairy until you get all the enemies targeting each other. I farm with dragons and provo, that way my dragons barely take any damage.

The Occlo dungeon is a good spot to start for a Provo mage. I made my first 200k farming gold and spined leather from ratmen and giant toads. Casting blade spirits will speed up the process.

provoke monsters to kill each other as the Gnome stated. I thought the same thing in a way until i actually played the character. You will be happy you added those 2 simple fairly quick raising skills if you did decide to go that route

@Ohris Try to blow your brain, break your knees and go your own way. The more guides you read and the more tips you ask, the less golden moments of nubility and real adventure and discovery.

My path is still this way and I promise that it will be interesting for you and you will be glad even if you can light a fire ...

Any experience acquired independently will remain with you until the end of days!

Understand me correctly friend and wish you an interesting adventure. )))

    God bless UO

In my opinion the best starter build to help fund your training is a provo mage w/ hiding & stealth. Provo can be trained up quickly, cheaply, and reduces your reg costs significantly while farming.

You can run in and drop a blade spirit, provo various mobs against one another, and then hide. The only reason i really liked adding stealth, was if a PK did show up, i could stealth off screen before recalling out.

I agree with all about Provocation, that's a neat skill to start gathering some gold!

Another option that can give you a lot of bandages or money is to farm cotton at Ocllo.

Remember that you can create up to 3 accounts, so you can have one actively playing and another 2 macroning.

EDIT: Provo-Dexer is even cheaper than a mage, consider it as an option.

+1 for the provo dexer! They are also more fun to play than the mage.

One option is to just play your mage. Go out and kill stuff and have fun. I mean feel free to be the millionth tamer or 500,000th provoker, especially if you are looking to maximize profit...but a mage can do just fine.

I prefer it that way. But what do I know. I'm an orc. I suck the heads off fish.
