Sheep farming has been involved in numerous patches already. Not coincidentally, mutombo was part of the driving force that encouraged some of those changes. I don't think it's over yet either considering there's still massive sheep farms out on boats behind massive blockades in the seas. None of these things should be going on. Yes, everyone is now accustomed, after years of Freesharding, to maximum exploitation of existing mechanics, within the bounds of the rules. It's really no mystery why free shards tank after a few years, considering how easy it is to just click the Easy Button for wealth generation.

I think Basoosh and Miller make my point better than I can make it myself.

What I fear most, or what my input is trying to do to help is to prevent receiving PM's like this when I message my friends to see how they are doing (name and clues of identity have been redacted because I did not ask this person's permission to publish this):

I'd just like to put in my final two cents for a good long time on UOR here:

    1) Chris, I love how you called me out directly, by name, asking for a constructive post with content. I gave it to you, and you willfully ignored it -- further confirming my hand-waving accusations. Its nice to know how much value my efforts to help you out have REALLY been worth. Do understand in no small way, your attitude towards me directly has hastened me moving onto other things to do.

    2) Pirul/Basoosh/Miller, feel free to keep making the point, but sadly I feel its falling on deaf ears. My energy has been happily spent in other pursuits, and I feel I'm the better for it.

    3) My entire underlying point is simple: Myself and my guildmate only came to this shard under a single premise -- that this was a recreation of what we experienced in 2000, with common sense fixes. We moved well beyond that 6 months ago -- and have put a TON more effort into these changes that modify the core experience of the game and try to force new niches where they never existed before, while still not solving all of those common sense fixes that were the entire point. Boom boxes, casting into houses, the carpentry bod system that was promised 8 months ago, anyone?

I love the community here, and I respect a lot of you, but my time will be spent elsewhere. I didn't join UOR to join a custom UO shard, I joined to relive my experiences of youth. Thats not what I see here anymore -- at least not in a form that was recognizable to me any longer.

I certainly didn't join UOR to feel like every day is filled with drama and stress -- and that I have to justify how I choose to spend my time within the established rules of the realm within a sandbox environment. Sadly, thats all I've had for quite some time. Its depressing when you've spent so much time working for the betterment, only to feel like you were used up and tossed aside when you hit that breaking point.

Those of you who have been here a long time: Lets just say, I know how Rammar felt now.

Goodbye UOR -- those of you who actually care to contact me will know how to reach me.

I think this is a good point. I think many of us that are here, came from a shard that was a slave to the precise game mechanics of our youth. Which had its ups and downs. In fact, what drew me to this shard was precisely the things that WEREN'T around back in the UOR era... the fortress, the pet bonding (and improved Animal Lore), etc. But I think moderation in these departures from era mechanics is the wisest choice.

It's a sandbox in a sense, but your actions can have an effect on hundreds of other people, and there's a tradeoff between doing whatever the heck you want, and helping ensure you're not the only one left in a wasteland doing whatever the heck you want.

I have no idea what Rammar's frustrations were with this shard, but I can say with certainty that what he did on a prior shard hastened my departure there. And probably that of others. This is not hyperbole. Razor is a nice asset to all players in this day and age, but turning this game into a coding competition only interests and benefits a dozen people, at the expense of everyone else.

You can claim "sandbox game" and the right to do what you want, but there are many people - most importantly staff - who have put an enormous amount of time and effort into the shard. So they also seem justified IMO to enact changes and rules where they see fit to balance between allowing for a sandbox and actually having a populated, active shard.

You know what sucks in a sandbox? Some kid parking a machine in the corner of the sandbox that automatically builds bases and sandcastles while the kid sits back and watches everyone else playing with buckets and shovels.
I started reading this thread again from the beginning hoping to make some sense of all the chatter. It would seem that playing the game is truly a burden on the players. The sandbox is still right here, but the impact machines can have on it has been reduced. I went out yesterday and mined up 40,000 stones of ore in a couple hours using a battle miner and gargoyle picks.

I do agree that the persistently spawning ore golems are more of a nuisance to my traditional (non-combative) miner, than normal outdoors spawn ever were in the past. I would like to see them removed and only spawned with gargoyle shovels. They killed multiple pack animals and effectively forced my hand into playing my battle miner.

At first the Recall restrictions were a bit of a burden but I very quickly created a book marking cave entrances around Britannia. I tear through the caves sapping every vein and dropping it to the ground. When it's done, I gate in my group of pack horses, load up and gate home. It's really quite effective and fun, but definitely not traditional mining.

I would like to be able to wander the local mountains mining with my pack horse(s) without worrying about how soon that golem will spawn in our once peaceful caves.

It wasn't a slave, it was a walking contradiction dancing back and forth on itself, originally era accuracy for pvp only, then all of a sudden era accuracy became an excuse for their laziness.....glad to have left, to never look back.

What brought me here, is that the GM's work on their server.
They improve it, add new stuff, some stuff comes quick and easy, other stuff will take a lot more work, if it's broken, they'll fix it.

You won't find an era accurate shard anywhere, unless you use a time machine and load up OSI. Some lil tweak will be different, and people will remember it differently, being a certain way, certain they are correct in remembering it their way.

I'd rather take what we have here. UOR for a base, then improved.
Keep up the good work Chris & Telamon!

er, in that case, keep up the good work Chris!
It's a nice spot, especially for a one man band, or have I missed out on there being a team...

Not happy to see you go.... but, I understand. You were a huge help to this server/community. The help, and things you did for the community can go unmentioned perhaps, I really think you made an impact from what I have seen. I appreciate all that you did. I know you have already been missed by many, wish you the best.

I have never played a battle miner, and now I'm being forced to.

I don't care for any of these changes, and I don't like being shafted because of a few macro miners. There are still plenty of veins to mine with them running around, so I don't buy this BS one bit. The delay is crap. The golems are crap.

    and..

I mine manually with no scripts.

I do agree that the perpetual golem spawn in the caves is truly a detriment to traditional mining. Otherwise, the changes are all completely welcome and have not negatively impacted my ability to fill BoDs.

Just to clear up a nagging misconception; this is about way more than ingots. Stop trivializing it. This is about things that were encouraged here, with common sense applied (like the wonderful AFK system -- THAT SHOULD BE RELIED ON INSTEAD OF PROGRAMMING NEW SOLUTIONS TO THE PROBLEM) -- including the very automated tasks that are being discussed -- and the fact that there was a swift transition of gutting it completely. It leaves question about judgement. And as I've noted in a certain other thread, when you take an exception towards poor judgement in a multitude of cases, it becomes hard to withhold the emotion.

Now, just to note, I'm not calling you out here Gid. I like you, you know this. We're buds :) I otherwise completely agree with your post, and would never hope to presume the life hit you experienced and we have discussed intimately in any kind of comparison -- but you're absolutely right that separation is needed. I'm not dropping my houses, but I will be handing them to a reliable friend for refreshing, as the weekly cycle keeps me hoping, stressing, overthinking, and spending way more personal energy on this than I absolutely should.

The problem though, and the reason I feel I lashed out the way I have in this thread is this: I just feel like I'm being taken at face value, when theres a lot more depth to the concern rather than a one way street. My concern is that this shard is advertised as UO:R, the way you remember it from 1999-2000 -- perfected. The more we deviate from the natural form of UO, the less thats true. This is a big change that direction.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ The UOR banner ad, as used on UO Gateway."Accurate Renaissance ERA Mechanics" "Come experience the UO you Remember!" ...I don't remember not being able to recall into mines, or a ton of other things that are getting closer and closer to the core experience outside of tamer PvM and PvP. This banner ad, this common sense mission statement, this direction as outset from the start, was why I joined the shard in the first place. Just like everyone that migrated from there, I expected UOSA with less rigidity -- and to be fair, it felt like that until the last few months, when the initial fallout with Sandro/Ezekiel occurred here behind the scenes. But since then, there's been a continuously hard shift away from what I always understood to be the mission statement of this shard. This discussion, these changes, really punctuate that feeling for me.
