So i have never GM'd a blacksmith before. I have gotten close but never managed to stick to it. Lately I mined a bunch of iron about 12k. I went from 82% to 92%, basically. Can anyone tell me if this is comparable with their experiences,

IIRC, there’s a few blacksmith threads that track it. I think the last stretch gains a little faster near the end. Been many years since I Gmd it

My guess is you probably need 10K-20K more ingots until you hit GM (I have GM smithing on all 3 of my Bod toons). You can buy ingots from the blacksmith shoppe. You get a 1gp/per discount if you are part of the blacksmith guild.

Yes, I'm aware.. thought i would open up a discussion on the subject though anyway for fun, in case anyone wanted to chat while I make the final ascent XD

Hm, interesting.. thanks for the info. I will report back once I finish.

My plan then will be to mine 20k ingots, then when I GM I will just sell the rest.

I won't buy ingots though, I kind of enjoy mining ;)

Hey I've got an update. In the last few weeks I have gotten back into UO and have mined 10k ingots. My smith was at about 92-93% before starting but didn't really keep track until I hit 94%

I did some reading about the guides and had to change my strategy, I was making plate legs and tunics for a while there. Anyway I tried spears and gloves but gorgets ultimately got me the most gains in the beginning, and seemed eventually to top out. At 96.9 I started doing gloves again then getting good gains and am gonna try to get to 98% today if I can.

At this rate it's looking like it might take another 10k ingots to GM. Maybe a little less 8k or something

Alright here are the numbers for anyone interested. There are several guides that talk about numbers, I was glad to read over each of them, If there were more examples I would have wanted to read them. And so here are the exact statistics from 94%

Like I said, I tried spears and gloves early on and they weren't bad but gorgets got me to 96.5 better than anything and after that seemed to lose there effectiveness, at which point gloves did the trick.

    94.0 > 94.5 = 930 Ingots (186/.1) Gorgets
    94.5 > 94.9 = 965 Ingots (241.25/.1) Spears
    94.9 > 95.0 = 125 Ingots (125/.1) Gorgets
    -94.5 > 95.0 = 1090 Ingots (218/.1)
    ~94.0 > 95.0 = 2020 (202/.1)

At this point I had in my possession...
    882 Dull Copper Ingots 5788 Iron Ingots = 6670 @ 95%

    95.0 > 95.5 = 1170 Ingots (234/.1) Gloves
    95.5 > 96.0 = 731 Iron + 200 DC Total 931 Ingots (186.2/.1) Gorgets
    96.0 > 96.5 = 195 Ingots (39/.1) Gorgets
    96.5 > 96.9 = 1770 Ingots (442.5/.1) Gorgets
    96.9 > 97.9 = 1554 Ingots (155.4/.1) Gloves

So as you can see it was going pretty good and then when I hit 96% I got a really good streak of luck and when to all the way to 96.5 within a few minutes using 195 Ingots. Then after 96.5 I kept making gorgets and it didn't go well, it was a slug fest and finally I couldn't take it anymore and switched to Gloves. Things went smooth after that for another full percent. At 97.9 I have decided to call it in with 368 Iron Ingots in reserve plus another 352 Dull Copper (I am not able to smelt the DC yet so I stopped using it for now)

Another full two percent and then some to go, should be fun
