There was a swirl of air on the ground that spun the debris and aged cobwebs in a whirl before a bright portal cut through the empty darkness of the Dark Chapel. Jupiter, and the Avant Garde of Covetous stepped through the gateway from another location.

“You know your tasks,” Jupiter spoke to the others as they came through. “Once Radagast and I begin the contest, we must not be interrupted. If we are, our minds will be forfeit to the dark keepers of this evil place.”

Lady Kashla released a oddly gleeful chuckle, “Oh now, I just bested three puzzle boxes of Khaldun before dinner. How difficul could this really be?” She tapped Kazam on the back as she laughed again, “Perhaps the spearman would benefit from your speech.”

No doubt shown upon Kazam’s face as he slammed his massive pike between cold floor tiles. He dipped his hands in a small, well-worn pouch upon his belt, then clapped his hands together and a small white cloud of burst and vanished into the darkness as the gate closed behind.

“Where is Stalwart?” Jupiter called out, between whispers into the lantern that set it alight.

“I am here,” said a voice from nowhere.

“Hrmph. Veiled,” Kazam grunted. “Must be a bard.” It was probably best that the darkness hid the glower on Stalwart’s face. Their task would be difficult enough without contention within their own ranks.

“I sent word to Gilgamesh to cover our rear,” Stalwart spoke again. “He is making sure the bones remain in a state of rest so the liches cannot summon them.”

Jupiter nodded and turned in the darkness, “Radagast, are you sure you are up to this. I cannot ask you to risk forfeit of your own mind. There is no telling what the dark keepers would lay at your hands if you were be compelled to do their bidding.”

A light of a torch flickered and flared to brilliance causing the shadows to leap away from Radagast’s face and bounce upon the wall. “Wizard, we were born for such contests. We will not fail.”

The quest, as Jupiter and clearly explained it in full (and for which every last detail had obviously been meticulously planned) commenced. A game of chess within the Lich’s throne room to lure the ancient wreches from their slumber, a pile of uncoveted gold, and lights to cleanse fight against the darkness. With all three elements in place, the match began!

No sooner had they moved the first pawn, did the liches come nearly at full sprint. At least, as full sprint as century old corpses could flail, drawn by mental lure of the game. But to them, it was no mere game, they meant to feed upon the living knowledge they had not tasted in ages.

Of course, they subsisted upon the memories of the fallen warriors who haplessly dared to disregard the sentinal statue’s warning. But they had not had a feast of memories like this laid before them in ages…

After the chess contest was completed, we took the uncoveted gold and fed most of it to a white wrym

And we finished off the evening by sending Kazam to fight a rotting corpse single handedly! Kazam did well, but apparently shoving us out of the way exhausted him and he went down unexpectedly. Gilgamesh and his buckler then stepped in to finish off the wretched thing.

The chess was not trapped? You could've been there for an eternity!
