This may, or may not, be a bug. But I have noticed what seems to me to be a very minor, yet interresting inconsistency. When I come in from mining with my pack animal's packs all full of ore, I have to move that ore from the animal's pack to either the ground or to my pack before I can smelt it. This leaves me with two options:

    1. I take the whole ore pile (800 max if all same ore type) and quickly drop it to the floor/ground and double-click it to smelt it all at once.
    2. I take the max. stack of ore that I can hold (based on my STR) from my pack animal's pack to my own and smelt it. Repeat till animal's pack is empty.

My fear of option 1 is that someone could be standing there, hidden, and smelt my ore out from under me. Although I am fairly quick, I know there are many out there that are quicker. Like most out there, I rarely use option 2 because I'm in a hurry.

Now, it does actually make sense to me to only be able to smelt ore that is in one's own pack. That being said, and if that is the consensus, perhaps being able to smelt ore directly off the ground is something that needs to be looked at as a possible change. However, if smelting ore directly from the ground is to remain as-is, then maybe a change could be made to allow for similar direct smelting of ore from our own pack animal's packs.

hi, to add to this. At some point one could smelt ore from the pack animals pack. But...I do not recall which
era that was. "my two cents worth"

I'd really appreciate someone looking into this.

Even if merely to say "No, we are not going to change it."

    Thanks

While you can store items in a container, technically you do not own the items in a pack horses pack. When smelting ore in this manner you are correct, someone could come along and attempt to smelt it.

However even with gm mining, you could just as easily fail to smelt the stack of 800 iron ore, resulting in the loss of 400 raw ore.

Most players will advise you to use a restock + smelt process.

At the moment there are no plans to change this behavior, this is correct for pretty much all ERA's of UO.

My thought was that since I could smelt from my pack, which I own, I would think I could smelt from the pack of my packhorse, which I also own.

Here's the rub, and probably a few more minor fixes for you to make.

I just tried the following: I placed a Turnip, a Fish Steak, Scissors, and a Dagger in my packhorse's pack and I was able to eat the food and use both implements from
inside my packhorse's pack. I was also able to use my Pickaxe from my packhorse's pack, however, I was unable to use my Katana or a shovel
from the pack of my packanimal, which seems correct.

Sorry to make more work for you. I had never considered accessing food or some tools from a packanimal's pack before, until your reply above.

But seriously man, thank you very much for looking into all this.
