Does anyone else think this shard should have an official Discord?

I'm interested in trying this shard but IRC is extremely archaic, i personally think we should have a Discord server which is far more modern.

I can't even connect to the IRC, i just get an unmoving loading screen and Error #2046

The server owner has adressed why we don't have a discord in this thread here.

Are you running an IRC client or trying the web based version?

I'm on a Mac and when I try and open it through safari it never works but is fine on Firefox. It can be temperamental but it's currently the best option for the server as it can be modified, which is the reason we don't have a discord I believe as it's hard to moderate as you can get griefers who spam, get banned and just make a new account to spam again.

I just think IRC suits UO. So no I don't want Discord.

The web site client can be iffy. A downloaded client or another web based IRC like https://kiwiirc.com works fine.

Most of us use it privately for guilds, friends, etc. it’s great for that but anything official should be 100% owned and controlled by the UOR staff.

IRC will make you into a man.

No pictures, memes or any other illustrative assistance.

You'll need to express your thoughts with witty sentence construction alone

And in so doing you'll enjoy UO a lot more as well because you'll begin to appreciate all the imagination players put into the game ;)

Quoting myself from a previous thread.

Discord is great for guilds or groups of players who game together. However without full time staff or paid community managers it is just very difficult to manage as a hobby. As I stated previously in our 2 week test almost all my time was spent sparing with players who thought that our discord was their personal community to invite people to play other games. Maybe one day when I have time to learn their API and write some very effective bots and learn a bit more about community management in discord we can revisit this. But in our limited test we had people specifically advertising other shards in their "what am I playing now" section of their profile while just camping in our channel 24/7.

Alot of people seem to be confused with how discord operates. The main thing I've seen people complain about is being able to:

Post pictures // You can disable pictures from being posted

Emojis // You can disable emojis being used

Spamming // Bots easily battle spam (Bots take minutes to add to the channel)

Thinking that you're always in a voice chat // There are separate voice channels the owner can add, you choose to join or leave at your own free will. Voice channels can have permissions, rules, who can join, etc. You could even have no voice channels.

Having to download discord // Discord can be used online just like IRC.

When the server's made it magically pops up on a "server list" for discord so anyone who uses discord can join // It doesn't magically appear anywhere. The only way players can join your discord is from your invite link, which is JUST like IRC's link on the main website. You click it, you join the server. You can even make it so players have to wait a certain amount of time before being able to type. You could also have it require a phone number for registration.

Discord takes forever to setup // It would take you about 20 minutes to setup the server, set the permissions, roles, and bots.

Needing to moderate it 24/7 // Of course moderation will be needed, but nowhere near the amount that is needed for IRC. Bots and discord do the majority of the work (filtering chat, spam, etc)

Yes players can choose to show what game they're playing and change the name of it to their liking. But it could also draw in players who show they're playing UOR. I highly doubt anyone from here is going to see someone playing another uo server and drop everything to start fresh. This game is old as are the players, we all know what servers are out there.

I'm fine using IRC, I'm just wanting to inform some misinformed people who think discord is the devil. When in reality its a highly advanced IRC.

So you can... turn Discord into IRC? hehe.

A lot of us here appreciate the nostalgia of IRC, we grew up with it. It is easy to use, has a basic set of features that suits any needs we have and it doesn't feel as intrusive as Discord. "If it isn't broken, don't fix it." Discord is nothing new, it is just a re-branded Slack and is more like a social network application than an internet chat. For Voice chat most of my gaming friends use TeamSpeak or the Blizzard Battle.net app.

Personally, I hate Discord with a passion in the same way that I hate Facebook. Primarily because it seems like it is the perfect platform to make money gathering, analyzing and selling my information. It feels like a package dedicated to GenZ to get ther insta-lulz with spamming memes and constant connection. I don't need to be constantly connected. I don't need a social network platform that networks all of my gaming together.

There is a UOR discord channel. Most people don't use it... because, well... they don't want to. You also don't need to create an account for IRC. Funny story - 3 weeks after creating a discord account I got an e-mail from them indicating someone was trying to access my account.

Well, I really missed this outdated chatting session just like my old eagerness for playing renaissance era UO.

IRC should be such a nostalgic treasure for many UOR players like me. In those days, we 'had to' learn how to manage IRC programs for an ideal UO game play. It was like... 'NO IRC = NO UO GUILD/FRIEND ACTIVITY' lol. IRC itself has no official connection with UO, but I think IRC has always been a good friend of UO.

And of course me, my friends and guildies use Discord time to time while playing UO. and sometimes, It had better mood/gaming experience than IRC got...
    But IRC is more 'UO-ish'.

...and also, It works so well on ole potato computers ;)

When I play a game that's over 20 years old that features 2 dimensional semi-top down graphics and can run on a cell phone, I expect nay ... I demand the very best of chat systems.

Yes, 2017 was the first time I've ever used IRC. By the way, I just changed from HexChat to mIRC and really like the difference.

This made me decide to try and track down my old number. It appears to be impossible. That is too bad, it would have been amusing. I think it was 6 digits. ICQ still exists but it isn't the same.

Yeah they wiped all the old accounts. At one point people were buying and selling low-digit numbers. I remmber my number it is 11855296 but I used my brothers account 1997-1999, he had 6-digits, so jealous.
