The simple steps to bond a nightmare: Obtain 1 nightmare. Feed it one normal raw rib (this will start the timer). Stable it for at least 7 days. Check animal lore. It should read "Your pet craves peculiar meat". Feed it two peculiar meat ONE AT A TIME. You should get the message "Your pet is very fond of you". Feed it one normal raw rib. Success! Ostards and horses can be bonded using the same steps...no peculiar meat is needed, use something they normally eat like an apple. A detailed explanation of bonding is available here. Why use bonding? You can resurrect your pet. (The critter will lose 10% on all skills) You can find a pet that has wandered off. (Subject to same 10% loss of skills) Some people like to have a specific color of mare/ostard. What to bond? You can only bond one pet to each character. You can bond any critter that you have the skill to own. Most tamers bond nightmares because they are more difficult to obtain, are less likely to die, and they look cool as part of an outfit. All nightmares are not created equal The set of skills is based on the type of critter; nightmares/WW/dragons will never learn poisoning and ostards/horses will never learn magery. The skill level of a critter is set at the time the animal is tamed. The pet's skills can increase through combat. For the most part, stats don't change on high level critters--whatever your pet has in str/dex/int is all it's ever going to have. Awesome guide! I carve out dragons, drakes and even nightmares on a regular basis and I have yet to find peculiar meat. How often do you find any?
Say I have a mare but do not have the required amount of skill to tame it. Can it still be bonded to me?
Yes. As long as you are listed as the pet owner & have sufficient skill to issue successful commands to the pet, you are eligible to bond the pet to that character granted you meet the prerequisites to do so.

As of currently, no, it is not possible to unbond a pet short of allowing the bonded creature to go untame via means of unloyalty of not being fed over a set amount of time.
After checking it out, you do indeed have to have the minimum amount of skill necessary to tame the pet in order to bond it.
Checking what out? How so? I posted the minimum required skills to accept a transfer in this thread. So long as you meet that requirement you should be able to bond the pet.
I was not able to bond my dragon until I reached the skill needed to tame it. Before I reached that skill the bonding status never changed no matter how much I fed it.
I have 95.3 taming, but I can't get my mare past the 'You should try feeding your pet its favorite food' stage. I feed it a rib, but it never goes to 'You must spend more time with your pet' stage. Any ideas? I have had the mare for quite awhile, if that makes any difference.
I mentioned in another thread that the pet bonding status messages are somewhat buggy, and everyone jumped all over me and basically said "STFU it's fine". Are you 100% sure it was a week? My hunch is that might be the issue. Other possibilities... is your "base" taming skill 95.1 or higher? A couple things on this shard use base skill for calculations. Or the message could just be wacky/wrong. If you're certain it was a week, it's probably worth the couple pieces of peculiar meat to give it a shot. They cost just a couple thousand gp each, I think.
Thanks for assistance. It's definitely been over a week. I rode the Nightmare for 2 weeks and then I stabled it for another 2 weeks. My base taming is only 94.3. Maybe that is indeed the issue. But yea, good advice. Doesn't hurt to just try feeding it a peculiar meat. Will give it a go tonight.
Didn't work. I fed it the peculiar meet, message still said 'Your pet wants its favorite food'. Fed it a raw rib, same deal. And then I was stupid and got my mare killed. So ... uh... WTB Nightmare...
Sorry for your loss. A tid bit of information might have gone a long way...you need to feed it 2 pieces of peculiar meat, individually, not stacked. What I did was: Feed it 2 pieces of peculiar meet like I described. Stabled it, every day for a week I'd take it out, feed it normal ribs, and stable again. After a week, it was bonded.
Took awhile (mostly because I'm lazy), but got it bonded now. The problem was my taming skill. It appears that it does indeed use 'real skill' instead of shown, as I was over 95.1 shown, but not over 95.1 real. I spent a night at the old Jhelom bull ring and I was able to bond afterwards. Thanks sirs!
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but in case anyone comes across this great guide, I believe bonding time has been reduced to 24 hours instead of 7 days.
