Gargoyle pickaxes

    do you have to use them in a cave to spawn elementals?

    No, pickaxes can be used on normal mountain sides also.

    Gargoyle Pickaxes with the appropriate mining skill can spawn an ore elemental or a stone/marble/sandstone elemental of the appropriate hue (same as the vein is normally)

    Gargoyle pickaxes also increase the quality of the ore by one, so if you find a verite vein and use a GP then you'll pull up valorite/valorite elementals/marble elementals.
