This guide is the result of my wife, Avelmira, and I GM’ing 6 smiths. I built my three starting with Dalavar’s list and adjusted from there. Once I had my system, I gave my wife the macros and let her GM hers while we more closely tracked ingot usage. How much does GM’ing a smith cost? It takes approximately 38k* ingots to GM Blacksmithing from 50 (add 6k from NPC trained if you did not start your character with 50) 6k to go from NPC trained (~30) - 50 7k to go from 50 - 70.1 7k to go from 70.1 - 85.1 24k to go from 85.1 - GM * Ingot usage assumes smelting successful attempts If you buy those ingots from players at the current rate of 8.75 per ingot, that’s 306,250gp. Want to save 26k gold? Of course you do. Rather than buying ingots from players, you can buy them from NPC smiths for 8 per. Normally, ingots are 9gp from NPCs. However, by joining the Blacksmith guild, all NPC smiths will give you a discount to 8gp. To join the guild, speak to any Blacksmith Guildmaster and say <name> join. The Guildmaster will request 500gp to join. Drop that on his head and you’re all set to get your cheap ingots from your NPC guildies. Visit most any rune library and they will have a book of Blacksmith shops. Copy that book and start your rounds. NPC vendor stock refreshes in under an hour. Like everything else, NPCs start with a low stock until there is demand. Each time they refresh their stock, they will double the stock until they reach 999. Ingots tend to stay bought up to decent levels, but even if they aren’t when you start, after a few rounds, you’ll be buying ingots 999 at a time. This process also works from NPC tinkers for characters in the Tinkers guild. Each character can only be a member of one guild. To speed up the process, put ingots on a Razor Buy agent with a quantity of as many ingots as you can carry (for me, this was 3500) and activate it. Using this approach, you can gather enough ingots for GM’ing a smith in 3-4 rounds. What if I only want to gather BODs and not GM? From 50 to 70.1 REAL (the minimum to gather BODs), you will need approximately 7k ingots I should warn you, however, that a 70.1 blacksmith will not be the most effective BOD collector. In order to have a chance at a large BOD, you’ll need 85.1 REAL skill. Additionally, to be offered orders made of colored ingots, you’ll need: Dull Copper - 70 Blacksmithing Shadow Iron - 70 Blacksmithing Copper - 75 Blacksmithing Bronze - 80 Blacksmithing Gold - 85 Blacksmithing Agapite - 90 Blacksmithing Verite - 95 Blacksmithing Valorite - 100 Blacksmithing For more information on the BOD system: http://uorforum.com/threads/renaissance-blog-the-bulk-order-reward-review.568/ Great, I’m ready to start working skill now If you have not already created your smith character, start with 60 Intelligence and lock Strength at 10 once you spawn. Blacksmithing is Strength modified, and success rates are based on displayed/modified skill – thus you save ingots and will gain somewhat easier with lower strength. You can raise it later, after you’re sporting the title Grandmaster Blacksmith. If you didn’t do this, don’t worry; it’s not the end of the world. To GM Blacksmithing, here’s what we’ll be making: Displayed skill Item to make NPC trained (~30) - 45 Mace 45 - 53 Maul 53 - 70 Kryss 70 - 86 Short Spear 86 - 95 Platemail Gorget 95 - GM Platemail Gloves That’s a lot of clicking; isn’t there an easier way? Why yes there is. Here are the macros we used. Copy these into your macros folder (%appdata%\Razor\Macros) You'll need to update the restock agent to the # you use, and retarget it to your container. Blacksmithing - Mace Blacksmithing - Maul Blacksmithing - Kryss Blacksmithing - Short Spear Blacksmithing - Platemail Gorget Blacksmithing - Platemail Gloves
Also note the Tinker shops sell iron ingots for 8gp each to members of the Tinker's guild. You can only be a member of one NPC guild per char, so for maximum ingot buying, you'd need one char in the Blacksmith guild and one in the Tinker's guild.
Very useful, adding to the master guide. (and tagging for myself in case I ever finish my last two smiths...)
Just GM'd 3 blacksmiths while eyeballing this guide for ingot usage. The only thing I did differently: Started making kryss at 50.0 Stuck with gorgets rather than changing to plate gloves at 95.1 I was training all three smiths at once, so the ingot counts are averaged from all three: 50.0 to 70.1 = 22k ingots (7.33k per smith) 70.1 to 85.1 = 21k ingots (7k per smith) 85.1 to 100.0 = 66k ingots (22k per smith) So ~36k iron ingots per smith from 50.0 to GM. Thanks for the guide, Captain!
GM'ed BS under 40k ingots thanks to this guide. I definitely approve this message! Thanks @CaptainMorgan
I followed this guide a month or so ago, pretty much directly, went from store bought to GM quickly and at just 38k ingots.
Just a quick question didnt see it mentioned anywhere in the post, when you say skill 45-53 are we talking real skill or stat modified skill?
So you know, when levelling Blacksmith I had to switch from Plate Gorget to Plate Gloves at 94.5 when the gains stalled and I wasted a LOT of iron ingots. Of COURSE it happened overnight.
this guide is awesome.....hell UO:R is awesome I'm just glad this game is still got a niche following.
Best part about the kryss section is you can sell them back at 29gp each and hold over a hundred in bag at time. Can make about 1/3 or little less back in gold you spend on ingots
Very good guide... Bought 40k ingots less then 12h ago and soon hit 90 (from 0).. Perfect macros.. Thanks a lot Captain
