Renaissance Guide to Avoiding Thieves The goal of this guide is to provide insight on how to protect yourself from being a victim of thievery. Dealing with thieves is a part of UO and the best thing to do is be prepared for the worst! In this guide, I will go over many tips that will GREATLY reduce your chance of being a victim, but by no means can I guarantee that you will not become one. The first order of business that will be discussed in this guide are some things that you must avoid doing at all costs. -NEVER have your house rune AND your house key in your backpack at the same time. This is asking for trouble. The best thing to do is keep a rune to your house in your bank box and lock a key outside your house above the door. -STAY AWAY from Britain West Bank, especially if your doing any kind of business or making a trade with another player. This place is a thieves den! There is a chance of running into a thief in any town, but Britain West is a for sure place to find one! It is highly recommended to find a less populated bank to hang out and do business at. -NEVER keep valuable items that could be stolen in your backpack . Now we'll talk about a few good practices to use to avoid having things stolen. -SET A MACRO FOR GUARDS!! This is a simple step that can be taken to get your item back after it has been stolen. It is possible for a thief to steal an item and NOT be flagged criminal but many times they ARE flagged criminal, you want to be able to quickly get them guard wacked! This can be set via Razor macro or UO macro. UO Method Razor Method To set a macro for "Guards!!!" through UO, simply open your options and click the macro tab which is located on the bottom left. First you will click "Add", then you will select "Say", type in "Guards!!!" and then click "Apply". -ALWAYS cast reveal or detect hidden when possible around the area you are at, especially when a trade with another player is going on. You can also use tracking to check for players that may be nearby. This is very important when making trades for high valued items. It is possible for someone to have a thief on another account or a friend nearby and cancel the trade window which will send the item straight to your backpack, making it easy to be stolen. -ALWAYS keep your reagents, runes, loot or anything else that you do not want stolen in a locked box or crate in your backpack. This is a very handy trick that can save you a headache! You can have the box/crate open and still be able to use reagents and access runes while it is locked. While it is locked, you can put items in it but cannot take them out. Unfortunately, you cannot access things such as band-aids, potions and food while it is locked therefore these things must be kept in your main pack and are susceptible to being stolen. With that being said, you CAN however access these things in a magic trapped pouch. Like a locked box or crate, pouches can also be magic trapped while opened to allow you access to it. The only difference is that a thief can gain access to the magic trapped pouch while they cannot gain access to a box that is locked. Magic trapped pouches are very handy because nosey thieves can't help themselves but to snoop your pouches and this will in turn, set off the magic trap, alarming you that a thief is snooping your backpack. Keeping at least 4 or 5 magic trapped pouches on you is a very good practice. Magic Trap is a second circle spell that requires garlic, sulfurous ash and spiders silk and can be cast with very, very low magery. This is a very basic backpack setup for avoiding thieves. Notice the key to this chest will be covered by a spellbook which cannot be stolen. However, it is still possible for a skilled thief to target the key underneath the spellbook but this will make it much harder for him to get it. Even if the thief does manage to steal the key to your box, all this will do is be an aggravation to you because you will have to axe the box to recover your goods from it. Using a "Newbied" item to cover up a boat key or rune is also a very good idea. Also, notice the trapped pouches. These are a good place to put things such as bandaids and potions to where they will still be accessible. If you have to transport a valuable item to or from your bank/house, you will want to place it In a locked chest to do so.
