Renaissance Guide to GM Stealing The goal of this guide is to give insight on how to GM the stealing skill. You will find that GM'ing stealing is very easy and takes minimal knowledge of razor macros. There are 4 things that you will need to GM stealing. A house to macro in, a stack of 10 empty bottles and two bags or pouches. Stealing is a difficulty based skill that depends on the amount of weight you are trying to steal. The method that will be used here is for every 10 skill points gained in stealing, 1 stone will be added to the amount being stolen. 1 bottle = 1 stone which makes them easy to work with. The guidelines we will be following are.... 0-30 buy 30-35 1 bottle + bag = 3 stones 35-45 2 bottles + bag = 4 stones 45-55 3 bottles + bag = 5 stones 55-65 4 bottles + bag = 6 stones 65-75 5 bottles + bag = 7 stones 75-85 6 bottles + bag = 8 stones 85-95 7 bottles + bag = 9 stones 95-GM 8 bottles bag = 10 stones Basically all that we will be doing in this macro is placing bottles inside a bag and placing that bag inside another bag. Next, we will steal the bag with the bottles by targeting the bag itself and then replacing the bag over and over. The bag does not have to be locked down. *Note* Stealing can be trained from a Thief Guildmaster which can be found in West Britain and in Buccaneer's Den. Your character must have 2 days worth of gameplay and be at least 1 week old in order to join the Thieves Guild. (Thanks Avery!!) I will cover how to develop this macro from scratch in this guide. The first thing you will need to do is open razor, find the "Macro" tab, open it and create a new macro named "Stealing" or whatever name you prefer for your macro. Once your ready, simply hit the record button and go through the actions of stealing the bag containing the bottles, then picking the bag up from your backpack and finally placing it back into the bag on the ground, then hit "Stop". Your macro should look like this..... Now, there are a few things we need to do to clean this macro up and make it usable. We will need to add a slight pause between the stealing action and picking the bag up from your backpack as well as add a 10.5 second delay for skill cooldown. To add pauses, right click on the line BEFORE the desired pause location and right click as so.... Then you will see a box like this in which we will be entering in a 750 millisecond (.75 second) pause after the stealing action and a 10,500 millisecond (10.5 second) pause at the end for skill cooldown.... After the pauses have been entered in, the macro should look like this.... Your macro is ready to go! Just remember to add 1 bottle to the stack once you hit the next skill range as discussed earlier in this guide and you will see this in no time at all! *Note* Nothing needs to be re-recorded when you add another bottle to the bag because this macro is targeting the bag, not the actual bottles. Simply stop the macro, add another bottle to the stack and hit start again.
Cool guide! Personally, I would use steal by type and an organizer agent so you don't need to record (change the amount of bottles you put back) every time you reach a landmark. That way you can just add a bottle to the bag every 10 points. For the more Razor saavy, you could fully automate this using restock agents and if "sys message"... but that might be complicating it a bit too much for a starter's guide.
How does one set up the organizer agent to run in a macro? I've tried recording me using the agent and I've tried replacing the code in the macro but with no success. Any help would be appreciated!
This should help you with agents and Razor in general: http://tessascove.com/guides/razor_agents.html
Were there any changes to Stealing since this guide was written ? Gains are getting painfully slow just above 50 shown skill. I only steal 1-2 bottles each time I target the stack. My setup : Pouch on the floor, 5 bottles inside and I keep stealing the bottles and putting them back. Nothing locked down or anything ...
If I remember correctly, I put the bottles in a backpack *and stole the backpack*. That way it's always trying a fixed amount of weight, not some random integer from {1 ... #ofbottles}. Remember to factor in the weight of the bag when you're figuring out what to steal. I generally followed StealingSkill/10+1 = weight to steal. I think backpacks weigh 3 stones, so at 50 Stealing, I was trying to steal 6 stones which was backpack plus 3 bottles.
I just picked some stuff with right weight from my treasure chest trash can. Leather tunic weigh 6 stones and gain is amazing
No changes have been made that I am aware of. If gains slow down, the best thing you can do is just increase the weight by 1 stone. Also, putting the bottles in a backpack and stealing the backpack is a good alternative, as Dalavar mentioned. If gains are slow, try these guidelines for your macro. 0-30 buy 30-35 1 bottle + bag = 3 stones 35-45 2 bottles + bag = 4 stones 45-50 3 bottles + bag = 5 stones 50-60 4 bottles + bag = 6 stones 60-70 5 bottles + bag = 7 stones 80-95 6 bottles + bag = 8 stones 95-GM 8 bottles + bag = 10 stones Side Note: Yes, I am aware there are several more "Pro" ways to accomplish this macro. This guide was written for someone with no macro generating experience at all.
Before reading this guide, I noticed that attempting to steal the pile directly really slowed gains down, especially after 40-50, as it seems to try to steal a random amount of items from the pile. Once I put them in a pouch and stole the pouch (1 stone for the pouch plus a few boards to get to the right weight), boom! gaining again at the speed of light. I steal, pause 5 secs, then organizer -or lift by type if you find organizer too complicated-, then another 5 secs pause, which adds up to a total of 10 secs cooldown, and at the same time pauses between stealing, lifting and stealing again and saving like a 10% time in pauses compared to 0.75 + 10.50
Thanks for this guide, Markos. It's worth noting (because I've had a couple of people ask me) that, in order to join the thieves guild, your character must have at least 2 days worth of game time and must be at least a week old.
Updated this guide. If anybody has any issues with this method, please let me know so I can help you out and make any corrections to this guide if needed, thanks.
Few things: A Bag weighs 2 stones. So you should be stealing between 1-8 bottles as this sets the weight of the bag between 3 and 10 stones. If you don't have a house you can do this on a Pack Llama you own OUTSIDE the guard zone. You WILL turn grey. Unlike Ultima Online official servers, having your pet guard you does not make it legal to steal from it in town.
Edited guide to reflect the weight of the bottles + the weight of the bag. Thanks Nexian. If anybody has any issues with this guide, please let me know, thanks.
For those of us who aren't affluent enough to own a house, stealing from a bag on the floor works well if nobody takes your bag. I just have it set up so that you drop the outer bag on the ground before stealing and pick it up afterward to avoid losing it.
If ANY new player needs a house to macro in, PLEASE talk to Gideon. He has an excellent new player housing operation set up! Check it out here: http://uorforum.com/threads/gideons-tavern-britain-yew-bank-and-new-player-housing.3399/ You can also find him in IRC most of the time.
