Thinking about building my first Provo mage and got to wondering how much magic resist would be needed in PvM.Do most of y'all that play this type of character find a big need for resist? If I don't really need resist I will plug In another skill.

    Thanks in advance

If you're okay with dying a few times extra to have another gm'ed skill in your arsenal i'd personally skip resist.

Everyone has their own personal preferences, if the character isn't going to toe-to-toe against monsters often resist is only there for pk defense.

    Magery
    Med
    Music
    Provo
Disco (could trade for another but it's handy!)
    Wrestling
    Eval/Hiding

^ If i had to make a pure bard nowadays

Provo mage doesn't really need resist. Goal is to get the monsters to hit each other, not you. If they do, it should be 1 or 2 spells at a time depending on the difficulty and fails while you're working on getting that Provo to connect.

Whatever characters you do decide to put resist on, I'd suggest 100 everytime. In my opinion, it's just one of those all or nothing skills.

partial resist isn't worth it as @Hollywood said. It's best to gm or 0 it unless you're REALLY tryin' to fit some other skill in, but other skills would be better to drop way before resist usually!

Provo mage? 100 resist. My build:

    Music
    Provo
    Mage
    Med
    Eval
    Resist
Wrestling (this one you can switch for hiding and works great too)

Same build for me, resist and wrestling are handy for my play style, I like surviving PKs.

Not only survive, but actually fight back once in a while. They don’t expect that.

All great options, this might sound nuts but I been wanting a Fisher too so was thinking of taking that for my final skill instead of resist..This is what I'm thinking, feel free to correct me if needed.

    Magic
    Med
    Eval
    Music
    Provo
    Hiding
    Fishing .

    Ah!! You want an Ishmael!

Love this build (tracking instead of hiding)! Specially for events.

There really is no wrong answer as long as you have:

    Magery
    Meditation
    Music
    Provo

Everything else is a preference. Personally, I love having hiding on my characters. I can't pvp for shit, but I can use hiding like a mofo to survive and even just have fun and drag out an attack to see what kind of combos pks like to use.

I tend to have multiple bard templates for different occasions.

    Magery
    Meditation
    Music
    Provo
    Discordance
    Tracking
    Hiding/Eval

is what I use for server events to find leprechauns, turkeys, indians, pilgrims, etc...

Fishing is great too.. Even tailoring if you want to collect BoD's and don't want to have it on another character if you're too lazy to log in and out of characters. Bards are fantastic for the mere reason that you can carry minimal items on you and not lose much at all if you die and earn a substantial amount of GPH.

So if I go with the about templet, either hiding or tracking (still deciding between the two) My guess is start 50 magic / 50 Provo and stats ?

    Thank you all ,

Provo is a piece of cake to afk.

Depends what you do with the build, but I found hiding to be very useful for some of the pk frequent hunt spots in my early time here. Hiding doesn't break Provo the way it does with disco, so you can Provo, cast a bs or ev of needed, then go invisible for that small upper hand if reds show.

Imo disco is more of a pain to level, so I'd start with mage and disco at 50 if you have those two skills.

Fell in love with this one on seige back in the day.
Ive had one on every shard Ive played on and if I could only have one, this would be it.

If Pvovo onto players is ever fixed, this one will be even better!!

I think a provo mage needs magic resist. Not only will you be an easy drop for PKS without but if you plan to fight any magic mobs you will be taking a lot more damage than you need to. If you fail to provoke ( and you will ) and get a FS or two you are in deep trouble.

    My provo mage build is:

    meditation
    magery
    magic resist
    eval int
    music
    provoke
    hiding

While he's not totally built for it he has enough power to fight back and make it interesting against a PK. I wouldn't recommend dropping eval int or magic resist.

    Magery
    Med
    Provo
    Music
    Animal taming
    Animal lore
    Vet.

I know you said Provo mage but this is prob the fastest cash in the game. Set the drags on them and even if they are attacking you it buys you time. You can take down almost anything. And have PK defense if you use it right.

Taming is a pain to train but you could prob pull 500k a day if you grind it out.

Edit: Wanted to ad you will die every now and then. But like stated above you don’t need to carry much. So as long as you have a way to gate out you won’t loose to much at all

Luv my provo mage. I personally use hiding. Definitely would insist on GM Resist, especially if you're killing dragons, balrons, hell even dread spiders, any big game that sues magic like someone already mentioned, it'll make a big difference imho.
