Hello, I am on the server since 2 weeks, pure solo casual player. I used to play on official osi shard back to 1999, now I am back, old and lost. I would like to have a first toon to re-discover UO, to build gold capital. After checking the forum, I thought a kind of tank mage could be the easiest. Started a toon with 50 magery 50 resist, final stat will be: Wrestling 100 Tactic 100 Magery 100 Resist 100 Eval intel 100 Anatomy 100 Healing 100 I have no idea about the stat. 100/30/100 is a good one? Thanks
There are so many better pvm builds Mage/ tame Mage/bard to name a couple, mage bar easy/cheap to build
Welcome Cerwyn, I to re-discovered UO after not playing since the 90s. I started out with a similar idea as yours but quickly found one major flaw with it. Most spell casting monsters can combo you with a hard melee + spell for a near insta-kill. You can of course run and recast magic reflect after a minute but its a harsh and slow way to solo. Bards can solve this, but if thats not for you then maybe checkout an ossytank build.
When asking for template advice, most people think of end game content and build from there. Instead, what is it exactly you'd like to be able to hunt with this? Earth elementals all day long? Ancient Wyrms? Anything-That-Stands-In-Your-Ways Other Players? Locked Dungeon Chests? Treasure Maps? Or, if you're looking for casual content that doesn't require a bard ability... shoot, try fishing! Magery Meditation Evaluate Intelligence Magic Resistance Item Identification Tracking Fishing Then, to do the custom Ancient Message In A Bottle's here... Animal Taming Animal Lore Veterinary Tactics Archery (or maces if you're daring) Anatomy Healing 100str 100dex 25int (use one nightmare for the Ironman Challenge) No bard skills where harmed by these recommendations. G'luck
Thanks guys for the replies! Actually I have no idea which monsters I want to hunt... Maybe it is anything stand in my way. The Ostard tanking looks very very fun! Is that ok for a tamer? Animal Lore 100 Animal Taming 100 Veterinary 100 Mace 100 Anatomy 100 Tactics 100 Magery 50 Resist 50 Also for the stat: 100/80/45 ? 100/40/85? I would like to heal/cure myself with the magery spell. And maybe flee faster?
If your going the heal by magery route, I would drop resist (your pet is tanking the spells), and either go 50 meditation or fiddle with that ratio to find a balance you like between having mana and not fizzling.
You can build your ossytank character either way but I always go 100/100/25 for max DPS, only use mana for recall. Some builds I use: Keza Keza Axer Keza Ranger
Is there a reason you don't want any barding skills on this pvm template? Bard warriors are really quick and easy to make. You can do either a peace warrior or a provo warrior. Both quite effective at dispatching foes. Peace or Provo Music Weapon skill Tactics Healing Anatomy Magery (for ass saving heals/cures/invis and recalling)
Hello. I'm not a pvper, but also a casual pvm player, solo much of the time. My main in game is a Mage/bard. With inscription. Her bard skill is provoke. fun build and can handle many of the monsters. All of the above is great advice. Think it basically comes down to what you enjoy doing. Don't need tame skill to ride regular Ozzys, just the frenzie ones. I'm Westra on irc and main in game is Marjo Marjo is Governess of Wispfelt Village and GM of PVM guild. ( not PvM guild )
A good complex build between dexer and mage can be found and used as either pvp or high field pvp. I suggest the Hybrid 90 str 110 str (strength pot) 80 dex buffed= 100 dex (dex pot) 55 int 65 int (bless) 100 anat 100 tactics 100 resist 100 (weapon skill) 90.1 magery 90 healing 69.9 med 50 eval int This build is a well rounded dexer that can summon demons and cast magery with 75% effective spell damage in combat. Casting prebuffs Spells such as arch protection, bless, agility, strength and cunning add +1 per stat/ac per 10 points of magery. This adds stats and ac with bless/arch protect spell combo's (If you have 90.1 magery the buff is +10). Deamons, Energy Vortex and Blade spirits can be casted and used as a "meat shield" Each hybrid character can summon 2 demons at a time and control them as if tamed animals while "thrashing" their way through their opponents. This build has the ability to heal while doing high melee damage and executing spells in either open field or close quarter combat. I suggest macing or fencing as swords do substantially less damage per second two handed. This build is semi cheep and very efficient for farming. It will keep you on the edge of your seat and hone your pvm skills. This is also a good build if your not the most sure about pvp and would like to experience a different angle.
.... to add, if using magery as your primary PvM skill realize that UO hates summoned entities (daemons, energy vortexes). Just about any worthwhile content will insta-dispell it thus rendering you crippled. Vote yes to remove dispell from NPC spell book! I approve this message. PS - potatoes
You could go with your original build, but hire NPC's or go with @Keza's ossy tank idea. With your build you'd have to focus on keeping your NPC champions healed. Replace tactic with something else, maybe even archery, so you can do a little damage from the background while you heal. Keep in mind though, that pks will walk right over you. #1 defense against PK's = traveling in groups #1 defense again rage quitting = making friends with a group of people you like Happy traveling *Jupiter tips his hat and exits the tavern unnoticed*
tl;dr version: Make a PvP Tamer or make an Axer... Hiya Cerwyn. If your still reading this Id just like to add a few things that might be worth thinking about. PvM is all about maximizing gold INTAKE while minimizing the COST of getting that gold. This is why tamers are so good at farming. The pets are a very good investment. Once you obtain a pack of pets, bond them, and train them, they can literally kill hundreds of thousands of monsters and only require bandages (which are free) to keep going. A few regs here and there, but I hope you see my point. So that said, you should look at the more cost effective ways of killing things and cheap ways to stay alive. The two most cost effective way of killing things are melee weapons that are NOT bows, and pets. You can choose to do one, a pure warrior or a pure tamer, or both. Keza I believe is the Paragon of Lesser Pets and if the tamer warrior thing sounds like fun to you you should listen to him. For healing, you can beat bandages for cost. Theyre freeking free. Magery of at least 65 is a must in my book unfortunately because greater heal is SO much faster and will mean the difference between life and death. Once you actually start killing things, buying regs wont really be a problem. So magery will be your best bet when it comes to healing in the long run. Using your magery to supplement bandages is a very cost effective way to heal. So basically Id like to suggest that you either follow Kezas builds, or make a PvP tamer or a PvP axer Tamer: Takes a while to make, but you have the full power of a mage backed by a Nightmare or more. You wont need anything else. 80str 100int 45d Taming Lore Vet Magery Eval Med Resist Axer: Cheap and relatively fast to make. You can start collecting so so amounts of gold after about a day of training. Really one dimensional. You hit stuff REALLY HARD with an axe. Thats about it. 80str 45int 100dex Swordsmanship Tactics Anatomy Healing Resist Magery Lumberjacking
