As it is now the Incognito spell last about 2 minutes, which is far too short. Since it does not mask criminal acts, there is no reason why it should be this short. It is quite handy for RP purposes. I propose that at 100 Magery it should last 100 minutes, or else should be permanent until dispelled with Reveal or detect hidden. I also think that Polymorph, if it does not already work this way, should work this way. On a related note, I think that if you are polymorphed and you cast incognito on yourself your name should change to that of the animal. Ideas or support anyone?
If you need to be incognito for that long, why not join the thieves guild and buy a disguise kit? The mechanic you're looking for is already in the game but the developers decided (rightly so, I think) that one should need to make certain commitments in order to be incognito that long. I don't think that just because someone can cast a spell that they should be able to have that power, too, especially not at the cost of a couple reagents. It's something unique about being in the thieves guild. It's cool. Not everyone should be able to do it!
I'm saying it is sort of immersion breaking that when I want to talk to someone in my "disguise" I get about 2 or 3 lines in before i need to re-cast to a different name. Also, I *think* disguise kits cannot be cancelled by another player's means by casting reveal or detect hidden
I know there is a way to get a disguise kit on a non thief character, but it does require an initial 60 skill points in stealing to join the thieves guild and then u can buy and use kits. However u can't pk or kill anybody or you'll be booted from the npc guild and you'd have to gain back the 60 skill points again
rabbl this is true. Thieves guild is sort of trammel nerfing of stealing skill especially its combat uses such as stealing regs in battle.
I like the idea of incog. spell lasting longer, but not poly lasting longer. Back in day I remember thieves stealing regents from players while doing dungeons crawls. This was done by both the "good" and "bad" play styles. lol For this sort of thing, I think longer incog. would be nice. Also for the causal role player, who wanted to role play a short while. Thanks for the thread. Interesting. Marjo Governess of Wispfelt Westra irc
I'm not against longer spell times either, I should add. I think a maximum of 10 minutes should be enough. What if additional casts of incognito, while still incognito, kept your current identity and reset the timer? Then if you were roleplaying some trickster mage, you'd have to come up with reasons to run off every once in a while to maintain your spell.
I really like this idea and solution! I'm not a big fan of making Incog last forever, because then it does make the thief disguise kit obsolete. But if this could apply to both polymorph and incog that would be great! I know i run around as a dog a lot, and i always have to recast poly, select the creature again. OR we could make alchemy potions that you could drink after you cast the spell to extend/replenish them (drinking the potion consumes the potion + mana for standard casting of spell) cool ideas here. put them in line behind everything else i guess
I see the arguments against Incognito lasting forever, but what about Polymorph? It would be amazing if this spell lasted until death.
This is exactly what I was thinking. Great idea. Do this! It doesn't replace the need for disguise kit but it makes incognito not a pointless skill. 1 ten minutes. Can be recast to keep same name. 2 Can be dispelled or detect hiddened. 3 When you die the corpse has the original identity. This little change may seem insignificant, but I think it would add a lot to the game... Polymorph should be cast to toggle on/off... All it does really is make you gray and dismount. It could be hilarious if Incognito while polymorphed gave you a random monster name. but IDK that could get too amazing for some people.
Duration increased and left alone? Nope. Duration increased, an investment in additional skill points, and dispell-able via forensic evaluation? Yep.
I wanted to necro/bump this thread for consideration of new joiners and anyone who had not read it yet.
