What are the best skills for a tamer whose only purpose is taming high level things? Ie, no pvp, no pvm.

    My initial thought is:
    Mage
    Med
    Taming
    Lore
    Vet
    Resist
    Tracking

I've never been a tamer so I don't *really* know how it works. Do I need vet? Is it best to bring a mare and beat down the target first (thus need vet)? Is tracking helpful? Should I add hiding? Would peace or provo be helpful?

Depends on what you want to do.

    Mine is:
    Taming
    Vet
    Lore
    Magic
    Music
    Provo
    Disco

But he is a glass cannon. He can hunt BIG game, and is great in instanced events, but is very vulnerable. Fortunately a good panic macro, a genuine distrust of random players running into my hunting area and fast reflexes get me out of trouble more often than not.

I see successful PvP Tamers...but that is a whole nother animal, and have no clue what skills would be best for them (I assume drop music, provo, disco and vet for med, resist, eval and wrestling?)

Pirul read my first sentence. I don't want to pvp or hunt anything. I just want to tame high level things. Just taming.

If you have no interest in pvm why have vet to heal your pets? Get yourself inscription so you can boost magic reflection or armour

Oh yeah, sorry, didn't read. Drop resist and vet for music and peace.

I was thinking for something like a greater dragon I might need to bring a mare to beat it up and would need to vet the mare.

Is peace helpful? If I understand right, after peace you have to wait 10 seconds to start taming, but peace only lasts 4 seconds? So the dragon is aggro before you can even begin to tame it. Am I missing something?

Also, is it really possible to tame a greater dragon with 0 resist?

I tame dragons (not sure what you mean by greater) with 0 resist all the time. The trick is to know how to do it so as to not get burnt. A WW or Dragon is going to eat through a nightmare fastish. I would not really bother dropping health down and rather concentrate in having reflect up, and greater heal the hell out of yourself.

there are no greater dragons here. you'll basically be taming dragons, white wyrms and mares. just to tame, take lore taming, mage, med, resist, wrestle (wyrms like to teleport to you and can wallop you quick if they do) and something like tracking for finding mares, or scribe for added protection against spells as wyrms are high level casters even before they're trained.

if this is a first tamer, i'd at least make him semi multi-functional for pvm, but if you're set on strictly taming, I think my suggestions would be the most effective

Will you be able to run more than one account at a time?

I'm doing two tamers in tandem. It sort of worked out that way cause I decided later I want my main guy to be a tamer (pve). The other one is on my 2nd acct and I had already gotten it to like 70 taming. So they can herd and tame together. No use having 2 tamers to fight things with so I decided to make the 2nd a true tamer. Maybe it would be easier to stick to just the one and maybe this is just a long term project that I'll never finish. But anyway, decided I would take advantage of not needing to fight by adding things that will help me actually tame.

    Yes

    1. different tamers are good at killing different things. provo tamers, disco tamers, provo/disco tamers, all around tamers (mage med eval resist taming lore vet), dexxer tamers etc. so having a couple of these types lets you use the right one against the right mob/boss whatever.

    2. I rarely utilize multi-boxing as I think it's a hassle, but using multiple tamers at once can be ultra-effective.

    3. taming the actual creatures is not that hard if you're creative, I do it easily on my provo tamer who is practically defenseless and it can be done super easily on an all around type tamer, so you don't need one dedicated specifically for taming the beasties.

    4. build one anyway if you want to, you'll have taming trained and can switch out the secondary skills later relatively easily.

If your looking to only tame things all you need is taming animal lore magery med. That will allow you to solo tame any thing that can be tamed.

Myself and my fellow brigands are currently ravaging the landscape.
We will take all your froggies and all the pretty ponies you love so much.
We'll take all the beauty, bounty and ease that comes with them...
    That you like so much.
    And we'll butcher it.
I'll smear the entrails of a mare across the stunned look on your faces.

    Hello Milky.

Here is the breakdown. Let me know if it is wrong, but it is what I researched so far:

--- I think these skills are a must for tamers ---

If you want ONLY tame things. The only thing you actually need is:
    100% Animal Taming
Without it, you can't tame anything.

If you want to actually control the animal you have tamed, you need:
    100% Animal Lore.
Without it, you will tame it... but it will just wander around not following you. And die.

If you want to tame things, without YOU dying. And be able to take it to stable... You need:
    100% Magery
Without it, dragons will most likely kill you before you can tame. Also, if you actually survive taming it... you would need to physically "walk" your tame to town to stable it. Or have another character gate for you.

If you want to tame things, and heal it, you need:
    100% Veterinary
Without it, you will be spending loads of regs to heal it. Will be out of mana healing it. Your tamed one will most likely die after taming it.

If you want to resurrect your bonded pet, you would need:
    100% Animal Lore & 100% Veterinary
Without them, you will not be able to resurrect your bonded pet. You can however, take it to an NPC vet to resurrect it.

If you want to GATE AROUND with your pets, you will need:
    100% Meditation
Without it, you will be out of mana after 2 gates. You will have to wait for a long time to gate again to take your pets.

Taming, Animal Lore, Vet = Core taming
Magery, Meditation = Core magic (needed for tamer)

--- The last two skills, I recommend ---

    1) Music : needed for Provo
    2) Provo: when you are taming Nightmares or Dragons.. there will be other monsters around. You can provoke them to get the other monsters from killing you. Maybe used for PvM as a side benefit.

p.s. Dragons's breath is determined by the Dragon's HP. And it can NOT be resisted. Beat your dragon down to low HP, then tame. Or paralyze spell + tame. You can also provo 2 dragons. The last one standing is most likely the stronger one, but beaten to a pulp... so tame that one.

For the most part this is accurate, in practice you will find that using para lowers the starting skills of things you paralyze, so you don't really want to use it on dragons. WW and mares you almost always have to para, and para field is way more efficient and without med you don't really have a chance at taming one solo because of healing and the amount of para fields you will generally use.

With the OP's aformentioned-ing ability to dual client I reaffirm my template recommendation (as utterly ridiculous as it is) as I feel it fits within the very specific conditions set by the OP.

what's the point of taming things if ur not going to do anything with the tamer? Using the char as a tamer/ storage for tames? Like it was mentioned up there, if ur only going to tame shit just to tame then u only need taming, lore and magery.

Here are a few templates that have a variety of uses. There are many more , it all depends on what ur planning on using them for.

    The most effective pvm tamer:
    Taming
    Lore
    Vet
    Music
    Provo
    Mage
    Med

The three most effective pvp tamers:
    Pure mage.. Fencer.... Stun mage
    Tame. Tame. 1Tame @ 100
    Lore. Lore. 2 Lore @ 100
    Mage. Tactics. 3 Mage @ 90
    Med. Fencing. 4 Eval @ 90
    Eval. Anat. 5 Med @ 80
    Wres. Heal. 6 Resist @ 80
    Resist. Resist 7 wres @ 80
    .................. ....... 8 Anat @ 80
