Silly returning noob question - never had to deal with a single bond slot, go figure.

Anyway what does abandoning a bonded pet mean. Can i even release a bonded pet? If not does it mean i leave him there and let him run wild or disappear? What if i wanna retame him later on?

    Someone shed some light please?

Transfer the bonded pet to another tamer and it will free up the bond slot on the original tamer.

The animal will still retain its "bond status" and only require regular food + 24 hours of time with the new owner to bond to the new owner.
