Bulletin Board - Guards at outpost "location" are in need of some masterfully home cooked meals. You will be greatly rewarded!! Maybe the guard can state what type of food he would like.
@Wise - there are definitely worse types of abuse out there . That sounds like it could be a fun idea! @Wulver - I like that, in my opinion if fits Cooking a lot better than plain ol' BOD's
Building on Wulver's idea, maybe cooking quests can raise virtue in the same way that escorting works.
Patch 38 has officially made Cooking a little bit more awesome with the addition of raw jerky & cooked jerky! People jerky, no less!
I was always under the impression that being full altered your passive regeneration; at 100% hunger (extremely hungry) passive regen is +1 hp / 20 seconds, and at 0% (too full to eat any more) it's +1 hp / 6 seconds. This doesn't really make cooking any more or less important since any food can be used to get full. Assuming that this mechanic still exists in our shard, perhaps GM food fills you all the way full with one food item? And perhaps the ability to cook pet food that would fill your pet's happiness bar with just one food item? I feel like these things would have very little effect on game balance.
Thats a good idea, and very doable. I've been searching for various ways to work in mini quests for various skills. This fits the bill.
Great Ideas so far. Building on them, maybe combine a cooking BOD system with the bulletin board system and instead of just handing the BOD in to the baker every time, have specific NPC's throughout the world request a certain food order. Say you run up to the bulletin board and "Telamon the guard" is requesting a bulk order of X amount of cheese pizzas for example. A system like this would also make getting whatever rewards are in place very random because it would a) require you to have a bit of luck to see a BOD request b) require you to have a bit of luck to actually have the BOD that is being requested c) beat someone else to it. If a BOD system isn't desirable for cooking, Wulver's idea would be great. Just have an NPC somewhere request a certain type of food via bulletin board and you bring it to them.
I know that this has been awhile and you've got more important things to work on, but I just wanted to pop in and say that Basoosh's suggestion was genius. I also wanted to provide two small ideas / suggestions to this thread: Fishing & Cooking Suggestion: Allow Truly Rare fish (strength) and Wonderous fish (dexterity) to be prepared as fish steaks at 'X' Cooking skill. These fish steaks would provide the same stat boost as the unprepared fish currently do, but the effect would last a bit longer. Instead of providing a stat boost for only 2.5 minutes, the prepared fish steaks would provide the stat bonus for 5 minutes instead. This would help PvM dexers. Prized fish (the subtype that allows an intelligence boost) could be considered for this as well. However, I would suggest having no change in duration for the stat boost for prized fish steaks - so, the only real benefit would be that you would able have stackable fish steaks. Highly Peculiar fish (the subtype that provides 10 points of stamina) could also be considered. Like Prized fish, the only real tangible benefit to doing this would be stackable fish steaks. A poor man's refresh potion, of sorts. The amount / duration of the stat boost could be adjusted, but it would always be inferior to potions. Wonderous Birthday Cake: Moderately expensive to make. It could be used to pop out a 'gift' that the crafter could put in the cake that only the specified player could open. Or it could simply explode like the old T2A tinker traps used to do! Would be more of a fun goofy roleplaying thing than anything.
I agree with the Godric and other comments on cooking benefiting tamers. Three main reasons why: Currently White Wyrms do not respond to all commands with GM animal tame/lore. Maybe some form of pet treats could solve this and help balance out the dominance of duel dragon tamers. I feel that pet Bonding should require a cooked food. Whether its high-level cooked food or not would depend on the pet your trying to bond with. Almost everyone has a tamer, thus cooking would be used! As for players benefiting more from cooking, there is opportunity. I dont think stat increasing food is the way to go... just one more thing to carry around because the PKs also have it. I can only think of two balanced additions here at the moment: Food for quests, as it has already been suggested. Foods that either make you more full or keeps your character full for those long macro nights. I am sure there's other balanced potential for player foods.
Brewing and distilling. I had brought this up in IRC but being able to make beers/ciders/wines that have positive and negative affects (along with the affects of normal alcohol ingame) seems like a neat way to make cooking more interesting. Then being able to distill the beers/ciders/wines to enhance the positive but have a chance at enhancing the negative on *failures* would be cool as well. Could also have catastrophic failures which result in deadly poison or explosive items. The only way to tell the effects of what you made would be with taste id as well.
I like many of the ideas listed. I don't think adding some sort of stat boost to cooking would be a great idea for players. Small fish gives some raises in stats, but, I don't think lot of folks carry small fish around. Do like the idea of pet food... Perhaps gm peach cobbler or other fruit pie/cobbler would give pets added strength. Like your pack animal. (since lot of pets eat only fruit/veggies) Back in the day, I had a catering service for parties and weddings. which was fun.. Like the idea of gm mark on cooked foods. And perhaps some sort of reward. Not sure bod would work (might be way too much codeing) but perhaps something like for every 1000 gm cooked/baked of a individual item with gm mark you sale to npc cook, you get a reward. Thanks for this thread, great one Westra
