I had made a sizable purchase not to long ago and was going to pay in plat, but didn't have a secure way of traveling with it. i.e. buying a house with plat. In the end I had to pay with gold checks then have them converted back to plat back in town. So in the end I am purposing the creation of a platinum check, with the minimum being like 100 plat.
If the checks are blessed it's a thief nerf, then I fear change. It's unjustified, no need to make it easier to avoid thievery.
I feel this is a good idea. Having a platinum check would be a secure way to transfer a large amount of funds for big purchases outside of town such as Forts or Keeps. Without the check, the deal is much riskier as you can be killed outside of town with this large stack of plat on you. To those screaming @Larloch about using gold... I think you are missing the point. Large purchases are often done involving 50%+ in plat, and with the exchange rate @10k it makes sense to purchase things with plat. I guarantee the people screaming that checks shouldn't be blessed would quit this game instantly if they had 10 million + ripped from their body while trying to purchase a large home or anything else outside of town.
I feel like the "it's a fel shard, bro" thing gets thrown around arbitrarily for some things but not for other things. Anyone walking around in the woods with 10mil in plat deserves to get ripped off because they know better.
@Vandalin How do you suggest someone purchases a Massive home? With the plat exchange rate @10k it makes more sense to use platinum vs gold. Yes, gold can be converted but that takes time and the house seller may want plat more and value it at a higher price.
I guess I don't suggest anything. It seems like a minor inconvenience affecting a relatively small number of players. Has a player ever lost a bunch of plat during one of these transactions? I don't know. I would expect two players making this kind of transaction would have no reason to rip each other off. Transfer plat at bank, and then the balance in gold during the house transfer? edit: The OP suggests a check of say 100plat or more. If this were to happen, I think it would have to be any amount or no checks at all. Otherwise it is catering to players engaging in high value transactions and creates two rulesets for players at different levels.
Yeah, but it's not supposed to be free of risk, is it? Any why should it be? If I would be venturing out in RL with 100s of millions I wouldn't be safe either (at least in Germany ). Granted, it makes no sense if you could just avoid all risks with gold checks. That's why I would always vote to "unbless" (dunno the english word) gold checks too. Can only speak for myself: It would hurt very much, yes, and maybe I would shed some tears over that, but I would always remember that day in UO, the day I lost millions. To be that involved emotionally would make me love the game even more - and for sure the person "ripping" that money from my body too.
my immediate reaction is "no". but if that were to shift into "maybe" or "yes"... then creating a platinum check would have to cost platinum. 1 plat for every 10 included in the check. so 100 plat check costs 10 platinum. maybe [cA] should start a real estate brokering division to help deliver a safe and smooth transaction? EDIT: actually, screw that still! because now you're just putting a price on 100% security. it's not about that. it's about allowing chances to lose. not making 100% winning hurt your wallet more.
I am not understanding where or why there needs to be a cost factor to this. Platinum is a form of currency and should be subject to the same rules as gold, hell hcoin should really be involved in this discussion as well. Had these forms of currency been implemented with UO originally, we wouldn't even have to talk about....it would just be that way. Yes it is stealable in stack form, but is blessed in check form. I guess this conversation needs to be focused to people that actually have these types of "1% problems"
I'd agree to this, minimum of 100 hcoin/plat cheques. That way low denominations swapping hands can still be stolen to keep those thieves silent, but large amounts can easily be transferred safely, especially for say a house sale. White cheque for plat, green for hcoin, giggity.
If your argument is that all forms of currency should be subject to the same rule as gold, wouldn't the minimum check be 5,000 platinum or hcoin? aka 100 stones.
Do you mean to say that only the 1% would have anything to say about this? By the same logic thieves would be the only ones to have opinions on thievery, cooks about cooking, tamers on taming, etc.
