I'm not going back to read all these pages so I'll just leave my 2 cents... Forgive me if it's been already stated. I don't agree with platinum checks. A. Trades in town are "blessed" for around 30 seconds. Bank immediately after the trade, or recall, either way thieves are screwed. B. Trading outside of town and using platinum (i.e. house): Accept the platinum in town and then complete the trade at the house. If there is a trust issue then just don't use the platinum as a currency. C. I'm pretty sure I know who has the largest plat stack on the server, and I'd wager I'm not too far behind. Neither one of us have enough platinum, nor deal in enough platinum, to warrant checks. My last large platinum trade was for 1k plat. The player asked me to meet him at the stables and because it was too far from the bank for my comfort I asked him to bring the horse to the bank so the trade could be conducted there. 1k plat was safely traded from my bank box to the player, then from the player to his bank box. No need for checks here. In the event I needed to trade 1k plat for, let's say, a house.. then I would have to really weigh my options and the level of trust with who I'm dealing with is likely the deciding factor. Sure, a check would add a lot of piece of mind but I'd hate to see another 13 page thief thread on these forums because they got the shaft again. I just don't see this being a problem that needs any codework right now.
sigh. As el horno said, checks were done as a safe way to move thousands of stones worth of weight. Plat checks should have the same weight reduction benefits. The fact that plat is worth 10k per is player driven, not an in game mechanic. This server is headed towards the "click yes to engage in player combat" stage faster than we think.
sigh. How are you in a position to lecture the admins? Chris said he coded it a long time ago. It's an idea, and it does have merit otherwise we wouldn't be discussing it. Faster than we think? On what basis? Almost nothing has changed here since your join date. Stop insulting the people who put time and effort into giving you a free game to play.
The part that was coded was adding additional information to the balance command, not the addition of platinum checks. As for the check aspect there only two situations in which this has merrit. House and pet trades. And I believe several players explained, in detail, why this would not be worth the work to justify. Just because the players, or the staff, has an opinion on something does not mean that it will magically come to pass. But we are doing a disservice to the server by "No Platforming" ideas that are unpopular (as the SJW's put it) simply because they are unpopular. Sometimes great ideas come out of discussions that did not start that way. Don't sell the server short simply because players want to talk about situations that concern them. Renaissance will always be true to our mission statement and 5 years of past decision making.
100% agree with you however a different opinion doesn't mean that it's insulting as someone above us said. As I stated, checks for other currency are great as long as they follow the current check mechanics. In my opinion. As for the "trammelization" of the server, Gestas put it perfectly and I can't disagree with him nor add anything. If my post came across as anything other than a tip of the cap to both gestas and elhorno it was not my intention and I apologize. Tone is hard to convey online.
As for you, usually I ignore you but I must commend you on your astute ability to virtually blow anyone with any authority or high standing on this server. It doesn't go unnoticed. Without confrontation there is no change. And I appreciate your relentlessness to comment on my every post. Admirable.
Not sure if it's tone or content. If you take the last sentence out entirely, or replace it with something like "But I trust Renaissance staff will do what is best for the server" then it's all good. You just have to go shit all over your own post with a negative outlook on where things are headed. This will naturally cause people to regard what you said previously in a different light or disregard it entirely.
You ignore me because you can't back up anything you say when I call you on it. Once again, feel free to reply to one of my many pm's where I've tried to address this with you directly. I don't know what authority or high standing is supposed to mean on a UO server in 2017. There are the people who own and work on this server, who deserve our respect, and then there are cool people and less cool people. Your outlook is another great example of how you think players don't deserve to be enjoying themselves in whichever ways they want. You seem to really love being a have-not, despite what you may or may not have and your assumptions about other players, and I can't help but think this is a pretty strong reflection of your character.
Well players can rest easy that we have no plans to add "trammel" anytime soon. But almost 20 years since the Renaissance era of UO we do have to face the realities of server development. Trammel was added by OSI to address a long list of issues. While we all agree it was not the best decision we can not ignore the underlying reason that trammel existed. Having a server so unappealing that new players are only given two options (get good, RTFM or find an easier game) will never lead to a successful server. Taking the time to address the reasons trammel existed using a balanced approach has been the key to our 5 years of success and our continued appeal to new players. At the same time trying to constantly address the demands of our more veteran players for "more felucca" must be met with the same logic. The deviation to that logic generally falls at the feet of the players. Why are AOE spells nerfed in houses you ask? Player Perception: OMG TRAMMEL, the server is going to hell catering to the normies. Reality: Clever players found a way to kill characters in the center of small houses (Which are generally owned by new players) Various solutions were researched but were unable to resolve the problem. Rather than allowing 1 player, to piss off 2 player, who then go off piss off 4 players doing the same thing, then 8 players, then 16 players. Staff Solution: Limit the ability for those two spells to kill players in a house until a better solution is found. Why is poison/Poison wall being nerfed in town for new players? Player Perception: OMG we cant kill people in town! TRAMMEL!!! Reality: Players, who were generally new, were creating accounts for the sole purpose of killing players in town. They would give them a poison scroll, 10 nightshade and rack up 6-7 murders before they went red. These same players were the type to complain about "There is no one in town" Ironically because they were killing them driving people to avoid towns. In too many cases when the staff investigated these situations we find account abuse or other rule breaking by these same players. Solution: Remove the ability for new accounts to engage in this negative activity reducing the appeal of abusing the server in this manner for this type of player. While retaining the ability for established players to murder each other in town. I could go on and on, but you see the pattern. To make the server approachable for all players, we have to take player behavior into account and sometimes make changes that the players feel are "trammel-adjacent". This is not a pattern of "trammelization" It is just the natural cycle of development to keep the server approachable to all players, not just players with 6 months of experience here already. Sorry to derail the platinum check discussion but I wanted to be clear on how the staff approaches changes to the server.
