I am sure this has been brought up somewhere, I just wondered what people had for ideas. Everyone will agree a gold sink in UO eventually is a must.

My best suggestion would be when we have events holidays or events you have items that are really cool maybe even unique like the pink horse that dropped at Valentines day (more era specific tho ride able pink horse was little out there) BUT you can't just straight get these from drops or straight get these with HC, you have to be super lucky to get a drop of a "Coupon for the right to purchase" said item. It gives you the right to purchase it but then you must sink millions of gold to purchase the item, these should be mostly cool house decor items IMO. New players could make a great sum if they got the drop and vets would sink gold for the bling.

    Any other easy ideas?

yikes... time to actually contribute now to save face...

I think it's criminal that this server doesn't have an actual Renaissance Fair "event" --- the holiday coin derived item potential is very high

perhaps introduce a Lord British vs Blackthorn type of thing as the combat content

Isn't a gold sink supposed to make gold go away for everyone?

House decor items get bought by one person who sells them to the next person for 25% more than what they paid, eliminating gold from one player.

This game is far too complex and exploitable to ever have a true gold sink unless you make regs 3-400 GP per or balrons drop 50gp But then newbies won't play and the vets would quit

I've always said that the best thing for any custom server is a healthy PvP player base. I think as far as this post goes the OP unfortunately used the term "gold sink" but, I don't think that's what he means.

The last part talking about new players having access to items that vets (with money) want but can't necessarily get would help move currency "down". This is something I feel is critical to a healthy player base economy and if I'm not careful not only could I full on derail but I could write a wall of text the likes of which no one has ever seen.

I'll try to be brief for once.

If anyone wishes to actively help the server economy there's many things you can do but if I had to choose just one.

--- stop using your 3 accounts to be completely self sufficient / spend your earnings on consumables, resources, etc instead of craftbotting them yourself.. and actively seek newer players to purchase them from.

... and yeah, back on that PvP tip. If a few groups of 10 or so players each rallied up and got things popping again on factions or w/e... you just watch. The trade forum would be hoppin with activity.

I've actually tried to rely on friends for things, it's pretty good!

The problem here is there is so much money....

I've tried to buy things like house addons only to be given them for free.

I've tried to buy dragons instead of taming them, I buy one and am given an extra 2-3 for free.

Why would factions cause the market to flow? Burning through regs? Armour market goes up? Did people use magic weps in factions when they were busy before?

I used factions as an example because I truly would love to see a high level of activity there this summer... but really any group PvP generally sees a boost to the consumables market - reagents, potions, specific scrolls, initially leather armor (never a "good market" unless the leather was "free" to make it), faction traps/items, filled runebooks, and of course the housing market among other things.

Not to stretch but typically startup groups that come here are fronted by one/two players that fund their training / beginnings... thus back to the OP's last point. Move money down = good.

Lastly, those that supply the aforementioned goods remain active... have something to come back to daily, weekly, etc.

    movement is life

I see people spending 60 Million gold on towers, 70 million gold on forts, I think if they had cool stuff like sparkles (there are a few now) saying simply look at how many plat statues there are at current market price of 10M each.... BUT it never took gold out of the market, imagine if there was something people liked but was 20M....

Due to AFK farming and guys triple boxing tamers and platinum welfare you'd have to make it so that the shiney items were either purchased with straight up gold or stop plat from spawning/being given away at all.

    Taxes.

25%+ of your gold loot disappears per month if you have more then 60k on an account or in a house you own.

    Remove plats.

Gold instantly would be worth a lot more.

On the idea of taxes - a property tax that increases with the size of house. The gold would be deducted each week or whatever from the owner's bank. If there is not enough gold, then the house cannot be refreshed until gold is put into the bank (thus giving ample time and opportunity to get the tax money). The amount of tax should correlate to the price of the house deed, so a small house would require very little money per week, whereas a fortress would require a fair bit more. If you want to own 3 fortresses, then it will cost to own 3 fortresses. This would be a decent gold sink that wouldn't hurt newer people unless someone gave them a fortress when they first started or something. I am sure there are other ways to improve on this sort of system, but just a rough idea. This would be an on-going gold sink, help deter house hording, and maybe even get more people active (since they need to make sure to have enough gold).

Yes you must purchase said "rare" items that have no function gain to the game with said millions of gold...

If you think getting millz of gold on this server from one drop is a great disparity, I pulled a mask dye 2 years ago on Easter and sold it for 2.5M, I'm still here!

Yeah but, what's to stop a casual player from grinding up some capital, buying up holiday/plat "rares", going on "vacation" til next year, and selling off those one of a kind rares for profit?

    Oh wait...

thats acceptable, if you want to do the work and wait a year have at it!
But if you're like me,I could care less about million dollar house decor then you're going to sell a deed to purchase X for 1 million gold (gold trades hands and stays on the server) Buy then has to pay 10 Million gold to buy said rare item from holiday vendor....

The point is... I'm saying it's not a gold sink if said item "purchased" both appreciates and is up for resale.
