    Hey Guys,

So I'm getting really frustrated with my performance lately...I'm starting to think its a CPU lag issue vrs connection.. Here are my specs, can anyone help?

    I run a 2012 27" imac 3.1 GHz Intel Core i5, 16gb Ram DDR3, AMD Radeon 1025mb Graphics.

I currently run though parallels and i feel like when i first started this set up things weren't so bad? One thing i notice is my CPU fan is always blowing full steam - i've done some goggling and apparently this is common with parallels but none of the fixes work for me?

Here is my CPU prior to UO bing launched.
    before load uo.JPG

Here it is as i open 3 clients

    cpu as admin.JPG
    Here is my core temps

    core temp.JPG

Anyone got any ideas? I'm a tech noob.

Ohh i also tried to install windows 10 via boot camp - that was a nightmare took me 4 hours... to work though all the errors along the way to get windows running for 3 minutes before it blue screened of death and then wouldnt re-boot. I'm thinking to try bootcamp with windows 7.

    Thanks

I'm playing on an old Macbook Pro (early 2010 I think) and I'm having no trouble BUT I'm using Bootcamp. I'd thoroughly recommend you do that. Macs just don't seem to handle games very well - hot CPU, fans at full blast. No such issues using Windows XP via Bootcamp...

Parallels and VMs just aren't adequate substitutes IME

Your cpu temps are sky high at 85°C

Intel chips typically throttle performance starting in the 82 or 85 range depending on which series it is to prevent hardware failure.

You have to clean the cpu heat sink and maybe change thermal paste. It is probably a blower style cooler and there is a wall of dust blocking all air to pass thru

Mac is a bit foreign to me, I am imagining it is more of a laptop setup inside than a desktop inside as its an all in one unit. If that's the case it isn't hard to imagine you will have to remove the heat sink from the cpu and it will be a large copper piece. If you do have to remove it you will have to clean all the old thermal paste and carefully apply new. You can't reuse the old paste once you remove the heat sink.

Those temps are blazing though, and that has to be a huge impact on performance.

Hard to advise something like that without spending quality time on your machine.

If your temp is that high, on 3 accounts, on a non-aggressive game like UO, it's time to upgrade.

IMO, Macs are trash. You can go to PCPartPicker and build a desktop cheap. Or build a 4K killer... I don't know your preferences or budget. But, I'll be more than happy to help if you need it.

I do this for a living with the DoD.

    Maybe time for an upgrade!

Thanks everyone for the help. I just don't game anymore other then UO so I hate to have to replace my machine. But it is what it is.

If you don't want to upgrade, you don't HAVE TO. Just don't run 3 accounts at once.

But if you do want to run 3 accounts, you're going to HAVE to upgrade, or risk frying the CPU.

I dunno shit about macs, but that CPU should have no problemo running 3 accounts.

Let's not shit on Intel, I dunno what the fuck the problem is, but its not the CPUs capability. No reason for UO to be using all those resources, this is a software issue.

You def don't need to upgrade. If you only use it for UO that'd be a waste of money IMO. My MBP is a 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 8GB of RAM running Windows XP on BootCamp and I have no problems whatsoever running two clients - can't imagine three would be an issue...

Although I did try watching Sky Movies in conjunction with that and it wasn't viable so that could be an issue if you want to do that.

Quick update for ya'll.. I spend the full day getting windows 7 installed on boot camp - had tons of issues to get it working but finally got it.

Things seem to be much better as of now, CPU usage is only 6-12% running 3 clients:

i dont use vm, bootcamp or any other VM type of windows emulator.

with wineskin you run UO like if it was written for macosx. its just an app

and i run 3 clients and rarely a 4th (test server) all at once without any issues.

    Screen Shot 2017-08-27 at 22.10.28.png

    i got the in there
    UO automap (working version)
    FPS patcher
    most up to date Razor

    and it works flawless

    Hey @Labeler,

I ended up taking my imac into a shop... had the guy open and clean the whole machine.. apparently he pulled massive clumps of dust out.

We also changed to SSD harddrive and then he reapplied thermal grease inside..

    I also run bootcamp now.

Things are running WAY better.. I still get a bit of lag spikes but i think its just based on my location.

    Thanks

Best thing you could've done after reading all those nonsense in the replies...
Now you should make sure to put you mac on a better surface or clean it by yourself every now and then.

A simple air spray sometimes will work. Also make sure every air intakes on your macs case are dust free
and on clean surface/not blocked (carpet or something like that). Dust can be a real killer.

I just wanted to throw in - for what it's worth - I also run UO off my Mac via wineskin and I have NO problems.....unless I open up the UO positioning system. It takes everything down to a snails pace and just isn't playable.

I'll have cursor issues, client will crash and a few times my Mac has completely frozen and needed a hard reset.

So I don't know if you're running UO positioning system but I just thought I should share my experiences!

Glad you've got it running smoother now, damn dust bunnies.

    dear mac community,

i have enjoyed over a year of UOR thanks to the hard work of NKR who made the mac APP in the 1st place and sharing it with the larger public. Thank you sir.
    http://uorenaissance.com/download

i have taken the liberty to update the game client APP with the following features
    - Updated Razor version 1.0.14.9
    (https://www.uorazor.com/)

    - fully functional UO automap version 8.3 including the map grid for ores
    (http://forums.uosecondage.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=19046)

    - FPS PATCHER for smoother gameplay
    (https://www.servuo.com/archive/2d-smooth-fps-patch.509/)
how to: once you run the app, fps patcher opens along with it. all you do is login into your account & character. once done, hit refresh, select the session of UOR running and hit PATCH

in order to run 3 accounts simultaneously, copy the app and rename them to UOR1, UOR2, UOR3 or anything of this sort. mac osx will handle this as 3 separate games.

for all that want this app version (NO VM NO BOOTCAMP) can pm me to get copy.
i also provided Telamon a copy for him to evaluate and publish on the download page if he likes it.

With this, i hope to have contributed & helped some mac users out there whom enjoy the classic RPG Ultima Online.
