Nightshark posted a humorous post in trash-talk alluding to "Trammel" as a solution to frustration from being PK'd in the face, or having your house looted clear. http://uorforum.com/threads/idea-solve-player-frustration-regarding-pks-thieves.4373/ but this got me thinking, couldn't there have been a better way? A way which would train victims to not be victims. What if there was a way for those of us with charitable intentions to exercise our desires, but without requiring us to become welfare magnets? My thought is a system, either player run, or preferably hybrid where charitable players could donate time/resources to helping victims of murder/thievery. I imagine that this system could be tied to the 'player assistance' volunteers and the humility virtue. Here is an outline of what I am thinking, and heavy consideration would have to be given to prevent 'exploitation' of this system by jerks who would just try to 'induct' themselves into such a system in order to exploit it. This could be tied with the Humility virtue possibly? Players could enter a special 'status' by using the "Humility" virtue. Humility could only be activated after player has been PK'd or stolen from. By using this they would receive -15,000 humility points, and they could only re-enter Humility status once their Humility is back to 0. While under the effects of Humility they would randomly spout out some of the commonly known and generally accepted safety tips about UO. Each time they spout this off, it would tick off some Humility points. If you opt not to enter the humility status, then you receive X number of Humility points. (so you would gain positive humility points if you are murdered and do not enter the humble status) Example: Jupiter is PK'd in the face. He wishes he knew how to prevent such a situation in the future, and when he is notified that he can report murder, he is also notified that he has the option to enter into a state of 'Humility' wherein they will be teleported back to Occlo and for the next 24 hours he cannot leave and general safety tips will be displayed overhead every 20-30 seconds. Jupiter can wait out the 24 hour period in Occlo OR Athena has volunteered as a Guide for new Players and can see Jupiter's current Negative Humility status. Athena could remove all negative points from Jupiter after requiring that he answer certain questions. In writing this I think I am overcomplicating it, but there has to be some that could both help victims learn and provide a way for those with altruistic motives to help without feeling 'overwhelmed'
I voted no because I believe we need to baby people less, not more. If someone quits because they got ganked then it says something about their determination and for generous and helpful players to donate their time to this will end up a waste because victims will find another reason to quit soon enough. Every time i got pkd or house looted it only motivated me to get better and pay more attention/take more care with my gaming. What I would support is a type of counselor program where someone arrives to help you out by reviewing the offence and informing the person of how to avoid it in the future.
Haha. Wise, that's essentially what I was trying to say, but with automation, and without any benefits (other than learning) for those who take it. I highly doubt we'd have an active enough group of altruists to show up whenever somebody has a question or has been pk'd in the face. This method benefits them nothing other than, at best, a free ride home (teleport to Occlo) at the cost of staying there for at least 24 hours while they are indoctrinated with the best of the best safety tips.
While noble in its intention I don't know how much use this will get. Most players are UO vets and know more or less of the dangers that are part and parcel of UO. People who are brand new to UO will probably be using the new player system so perhaps a solution could be working your suggested system into the new player system somehow. Don't ask me how though
I don't think it'd alleviate any of the frustration. Charity would alleviate some of the financial loss but it wouldn't do anything about the emotional loss. Most of the pain people feel from that kind of loss isn't simply (although it is partially) due to the purely financial loss of X gold and Y items, it's from the loss of those specific items and the time and personal/emotional investment attached to them. Think about it - getting killed by a monster and losing those items in a dungeon, as crappy as it is, doesn't feel as crappy as getting killed by a player in that exact same spot. The people that really can't handle it take the event as more of a personal violation than a game risk.
There is so much information out there on how to survive PK encounters and mitigate loss when you do get killed. I don't know if a specially made system that the staff would need to create should be necessary. If people can't be bothered reading the threads and using the simple methods then they probably can't be helped anyway. They have to want to do for themselves or any effort anyone else puts in on their behalf is wasted.
I am not gonna vote i am gonna tell a story of the last time i was pked it was a fine fine Sunday morning and i decided to do a champ spawn all by myself just to see if i was up to the challenge and right at the last stage after i worked this thing solo for TEN hours, three other people showed up 1 person i have farmed with before and two unknown people and start helping and then the boss appears and when the boss appears then a whole gang of fuck sticks appear and kill me and take my champ....
Time and personal investment Not really jabbing at you SexMachine, you just illustrated my point precisely. I'm sure the regs and gold you lost is a pittance compared to the frustration of having wasted 10 hours and come so close to solo'ing the champ. That sucks, no way around it.
Yeah piss on the regs and the dragons i was extremely butt hurt over the situation for the first few hours and was about as pissed off as i have ever been about anything that has happened to me in Uo so far, i took information gathering to a whole new level that day it was ridiculous.
