Trying to get a feel on where users found the shard For me I was mithered by Apoc to take a look...........
I learned of this place from Blaise. I had just started on UOSA and was in Adventure Time when suddenly everyone sorta' vanished. I stuck around on there for a bit, only because we'd just invested time building up some characters and didn't have much time to start all over. After a few months after I started to get the know the community, I realized that despite a few really awesome people (Jupiter is a great example), the amount of scumbags and griefers were extraordinarily high. It's one thing to have that sense of "danger" when out hunting, but it just seemed far too excessive to ever be enjoyable.
Hahah, 'Blaise' should definitely be an option on the poll! I was friends with Telamon on other shard and at one point he vaguely mentioned a project in regards to UOR. I kinda shrugged it off at the time but after a while of dealing with shitty mechanics that were clearly not getting changed, I had to check it out. After a week of playing in secret, testing the waters, I told the guild and the floodgates opened. Hail UOR!
UO:R came up a few times in last couple weeks on uosa forums/irc. Thought I'd see what the fuss was about.
Gideon made a post in another game related forum advertising the shard. I ignored it for a couple months, then got the UO itch, and followed the link.
I love old-school Ultima. About 8 months ago (maybe more?) I started playing on UOSA. I won't go off on a rant, but dangs man :? After a rousing tour of the other old-school shards available and having similar experiences, I resolved to make a shard in my own image. I patched RunUO to the point that it matched the patch notes for Release 16, and added in a few features I like from later releases (house placement tool, commodity deeds, etc). I even spawned the entire map using the old Stratics hunters guides for reference. Unfortunately I suck at being social. I couldn't promote the shard at all. I think I got like 4 logins in a month. Add to that a job that has periods of 80-hour weeks and you've got a really crap shard owner. After that I just gave up. I played Minecraft for months, but UO is always in my heart. So a few days ago I googled for "ultima online renaissance shard" and your site was the first link. I didn't even read your website. I assumed I was in for another UOSA experience (again, I won't get into bad blood, but dangs man). I just hopped on the shard with a quick character a popped into IRC. This shard's community is the best I've ever interacted with on an old-school shard. You guys rock! And the game systems in place are extremely well designed, not like some shards that have no (or little, or inaccurate) thought put into things. Ever play on a server with pet summoning balls? How about no skill caps? Yea... that won't break anything. Anyhow, I know I've been ranting a bit. I just want you folks to know how much I wanted this shard to happen, and I'm so glad that a group with both the technical and social skills to make it happen have done so. Great job!
My Old Man got this external hard drive that you could plug old hard drives into, he told me he was going through stacks of hard drives he'd pulled from all the various machines we had growing up and telling me about all these old photos he was digging up. I was all, Dad....that's dope....then he said he's got them streaming on his new TV. Then I nearly shit myself because I knew one of my hard drives was UO screenshots, porn and everything Wu Tang had ever touched stolen off of Napster and was all, Dad, Ima swing by and catch some of those drives real quick... Cue an afternoon deleting random .avi's and 2 minute 30 second length .mpegs and I find myself strolling down memory lane bumping to Raekwon and googling if there was a way to play UO on a mac. POW.
I was sitting at work one day and decided I wanted to download the UO music for the nostalgia of it. While searching I found that you could use RunUO to run your own basic server, so I started reading about it and trying to figure out how to do it. I planned to set it up and just play with my kids over our LAN. Then I stumbled upon UOR, read about what it was, and after chatting with a few ppl here went ahead and set up my accounts. If I had known about this server I would have joined years ago . I knew about “the other server” already b/c my friend played there. But I considered it far to silly of a place for me.
I was on the official server for a couple days, than tried to find a better server. Literally googled " Top Ultima Online free to play servers " Took about 10 more minutes of research before finding this shard and hitting the download button ! Glad to have met everyone here that i have met so far, friends or enemies!
Tried to log into my old account on Hybrid when I got the itch again but the server was gone. Read up on all the BS that went down so I simply googled "best free uo shards" and here I am
I took a couple of years out from UOSA when kids were young. Went back and quickly realised it was just about dead so I did some Googling and found UOR. Recognised a lot of the names, remembered Telamon talking of a new server yonks ago on UOSA so thought I'd see what it was like. It's mostly great, so here I am.
I saw @Puck streaming on Twitch, compared that to the other UO private shards that were streaming (mainly UOF), loved the era, ruleset because it was as close to OSI and IPY I could get and joined up here in Jan 2018.
Google -> Really liked the website -> 700 online, wow! (little did I know it's 300% inflated) -> Register!
