Lately I've been contemplating deleting everything and starting fresh with newb chars in hopes of reigniting my "UO desire-fire" (TM). *Related Fact: Despite what my forum account says, I've been here since year one. I want to start by saying that UOR is the best server out there, hands down, and my boredom with the game has absolutely nothing to do with the server. If it did, I would just start fresh somewhere else. But that is NOT an option because I can't stand the look, feel, or smell of any other server. Pay-to-win is a cancerous whore! ...but I digress... I can't help but think my boredom is largely due to the fact that I have nearly 15 maxed-out characters, my dream house, and the ability to kill any mob or craft any item in game. Now I'm not gonna sit here and say I've done everything possible on this server or explored every UO mechanic... but I do feel like I've reached my personal end-game. Often I find myself choosing Netflix or Yahoo News over UO and that's saying something when my current schedule only allows me about four hours of game time each week. The purpose of this post is to hear from you, the community. Please share your opinions, pros, cons. Has anyone started fresh lately or do so regularly? @wylwrk ? PRO> It will give me something to work toward. PRO> I can relive the nostalgic newb life. BOTH> With my limited game time it will take a LONG time to reach my end-game again. CON> I'll probably just macro all my skills again and this will just waste time and gold (I don't plan on it, just being realistic). CON> I really like my house.
I got you. The Journey a flash guide by wylwrk Objective: To strategically Grand Master every skill in the game on one character in a progressive manner while obtaining personally set goals. The path is laid out by the Ultima Virtue system. https://uo2.stratics.com/virtues/the-uo-virtue-system/ http://uo.stratics.com/content/virtues/virtues.mov You begin your journey working through the The Three Principles that being truth, love, and courage. From there you move on to your first virtue and hopefully with enough patience and dedication work your way through them one by one until you achieve the "Ultimate" Britannian, "The Living Codex of Ultimate Wisdom". Basically you're working templates at each stage that make sense depending on where you are on the virtue list. I'll leave it to you to determine them but, I worked mine out so I could progress without having to retrain skills or gimp my character too much. I really wanted to work through my personally created story with viable templates that would help me obtain the goals I set. Mine was a resource gatherer, a crafter, then a merchant as it worked through The Three Principles. Thinking forward I used this time to craft many sets of gear for my future versions of myself. Armor, weapons, potions, instruments, etc. Maybe one or two of you might remember when I posted some comics around 4th of July. My character was a merchant by that time and my goal was to encourage players to gather resources and entice some commerce. The goal was, 'better the server/world by uplifting and encouraging more resource gatherers. The more materials in the world being used builds a foundation of.. blah blah yadda yadda". Another example is the virtue, Compassion. It was one of my favorite stopping points. Compassion - magery, meditation, hiding, musicianship, peacemaking, provocation, discordance Derived from the principle of "Love" My dungeon was Despise... I literally "lived" there Home city was Britain My gear color was to be yellow(ish) I did enough escort NPC's to be fully loaded by the Compassion virtue My primary focus was to be out in the field rescuing PvMers that died (to monsters, pk's) and help out I had to rescue 50+ players I had to lead a group through Despise and "conquer it" ... and a "buncha" other "Compassion" related stuff My reward to myself for achieving all of the goals for Compassion was a blessed runebook. My guy was a bard, a pit fighter, a town guard, a detective, a necromancer (of sorts), a thief, a murderer, a wandering healer, and yes even a tamer. Anyway... so, yeah... there I went for about a year or so following the virtue system in game the best I could and GMing every skill in the game at least once. Think about it Mr. Green. One character. When you log in, there's no multi tasks to think about. No houses to routinely refresh. Just you and your one dude walking the world, getting in adventures, and stuff. Challenge. G'luck and have fun.
That’s an interesting play style. The simplicity of playing only one character definitely appeals to me.
If you're at the point at which playing has become boring, you could always become a Counselor. They do a lot to help the server and new players. Or, if you're gonna get rid of everything anyway, you could make the ultimate sacrifice for the good of the server, and talk to Telamon about becoming a GM. You'd have to donate everything you own to the server, and would never be able to play on UOR again, but you would play a direct part in molding the future of the server.
Naturalists are quite awesome tbh. Play the character like we used to back when we were kids/younglings. I've done crafters & tamers this way and the rewarding experience was well worth it. You get to see dungeons like you probably never have yet on uor Spending hours to get to shame, die awfully in shame entrance. Navigate your way through the fire dungeon, or first levels of hythloth/deceit. Instead of picking up magery, GET A BOAT! SAIL THE SEAS! it truly is a lot of fun.
I think we all hit that point in some form when we've accomplished so much and then it's just like... "now what?" I envy the people who could just give it all up at the drop of a hat and start all over, but it's easier said than done. I've also thought of ways to revitalize the game to myself. Part of me would love to just pick one char to play only for a while, one house. But... mah houses.... There are a few things that I can think of that add a whole new dimension to the game. First, ditch the light filter and roll with dark nights. It gives the game a whole different feel. Another thing I like to do is actually turn on the music. YOu can also change the mp3 files to different songs you can find just by renaming the old ones then putting in the new files as the same name. The music really takes me back to when I first played the game. Also, making characters that aren't dependent on your other chars is kinda neat.
@Mr. Green that’s exactly why I came to UOR, Fresh start! Also the era It’s a good idea to start fresh, gives you something to persue! Good luck in whatever you decide!
@Kirby I’m not GM or Counselor material, but thanks for the vote of confidence! Also I don’t have enough time to devote to something as important as that. @One @Valrick I’ve played a few naturalist characters, even along side the infamous Blaise, but eventually I always found myself “cheating” the gameplay and using my other characters or resources to help out. But if I wiped it all clean I think I could stick to it more easily. I honestly feel that third party programs and macroing ruined the game. It’s fun at first, but...
One interesting way to play is to make a character that can't have any major skill above 70 shown. The act of failing at tasks one takes for granted or being forced to fight down can actually be pretty fun. It also separates you from the desire to min/max while allowing play styles that wouldn't otherwise exist.
Or maybe you are ready for a break? Don't force it. Life changes. Interests change. Refresh your houses for a while to prevent loss (I know, this will be a popular statement lol), and wait and see if your desire to play returns. This is a game after all, and in the grand scheme of things nothing more than entertainment. When it stops entertaining, move on. If you get to the point that you decide that it's time for new horizons, give it to somebody (or bodies) new and fresh, and have some satisfaction in the fact that somebody new will get the enjoyment that you did. I personally doubt deleting everything will ignite a fire of excitement. Probably the opposite.
I have found myself in the same boat. Interest in gaming as a whole has been falling for a while, but reaching its peak in the last month or so. I am an older gamer and maybe that means I am becoming a snowbird gamer, only around for certain seasons. No idea what I will do as I have been contemplating the future myself. Whatever you decide, I wish you well @Mr. Green
Do you RP @Mr. Green? Server can always use more people to boost the RP scene and not that I'm really involved but it seems like its a get-out-what-you-put-in kind of thing. I haven't had time to play in a while but I found the grind for wealth/pixels wore off really fast and isn't really my thing, so I'm hoping to do more of this kind of thing when I'm playing again. Make a brigand, orc, join the cove militia, start your own guild. That UO nostalgia I get every 5 years that pulls me back to the game is mostly from memories of being f*cking useless and running around with my friends and having adventures. I digress but just embrace sosaria as you want it to be.
So true. I love memories of those clueless days. I once spent 10 minutes talking to a red NPC, trying to figure out if it was a player or not, and why he was attacking me.
@Rextacy @Vandalin I actually recently co-founded the Cove Militia with @PaddyOBrien & @RIN I've had fun with it but it's also shown me just how little time I actually have to play. I've missed all events and battles thus far. And most of my guild interaction occurs via forums because I just can't be present in game often enough to find others online. @NCCML I've contemplated taking a break also, but I don't want to go into refresh mode. So even if I took a break, I'd sell my house and pocket the gold for a later date.
Oh cool didnt know you were involved with Cove. See you soon in game hopefully. Is it a time issue or time zone issue? Breaks are good. Don't think too hard about it and come back when you can be excited about it again.
If you aren't into vendoring, it could be a fun and challenging profession to take up. Also, create a thief if you don't play one already. It's a life of adventure and it is what has kept me around here long after I got bored of the regular grind.
