As a member of UOR, I am completely responsible for choosing to play on a server with PKs. That being said and understood, I hate griefers and PKs. I only have a limited amount of time to play, and I usually take my bard dungeoning in Destard (PK hot spot) or elsewhere. I'm on the verge of creating a crafter, so I am guaranteed some form of safety by crafting in the cities. Just infuriates me when I'm effectively forced out of dungeons (yes, not all... I'm not wasting my time on earth eles, etc). I don't login to powergame. If I did, I'd play WoW/ESO. I chose Ultima as a way to relax... I can see why Trammel existed. .. /rantover /thanks
Hey Torrand, I recommend that you check out fishing. I know it's not the same as hunting out in the wild, but it can be really good money, and it's surprisingly secure usually. The greatest threat to fishers are the occasional pk who casts an EV on your boat. Otherwise, it's golden. Just my two cents and I understand your frustration.
My guy you're on a bard, you don't even have pets to gate out! make an escape macro that casts recall and hits a rune in your pack that goes to a spot in a town or somewhere you know ain't EVER gonna be blocked, crack open that journal and tick the "show names of incoming players" in Razor and the second you see a red name hit recall then go hit up another spot. Even if 4 PK's all roll in with explo pre cast and land it on you, you have more than enough time to hit that one button and bounce....yea you'll die in town but it's a lot better than dying in a dungeon my guy!
I bet it was that rascally travel gnome. I hear he gates his victims to dungeons only to club them in the head and take their underpants. Thats what I heard on the UOR InfoWars commcrystal broadcast. #HijiWasRight
You should seriously think about hunting off the beaten path. I don’t hunt at the primo pk spots and it has probably been at least 6 hours of hunting time since I’ve last seen a pk and I can’t remember the last time one ganked me while hunting and I usually hunt with pets to gate out. I do try to find spots where they can’t just take a straight path right to me before I see them coming, have macros loaded mapped to close key, magic reflect up, etc. My gold per hour is maybe 10-15 pct less than the non blood spots on the gph thread, so we’re not talking killing earth elementals either. Spend some time and do some research/exploring and you’ll get what what, to me, is the right balance of “fun” vs “frustrating” risk.
The sweet is never as sweet without the bitter, and if you're coming here expecting reward without risk, you're simply in the wrong place. If anything, I think most of us yearn for more player to player interaction, regardless of what it is. I hate being dropped while hunting as much as the next guy, but without the wolves the ecology would be thrown off. Might as well play Diablo or something if that's the type of experience you're after. This game is both wide and deep, perhaps try finding something else to do. Destard's spawn is not unique to that dungeon. And almost everything is better if you bring a friend. As has been mentioned above and in countless threads before this one, there are ways to protect yourself to mitigate the risks involved with venturing out into the world. If you need someone to show you stuff, or someone to adventure with, feel free to hit me up on IRC.
Start off with provo mage with hiding. Hiding is king to getting away from pks. And you hardly have to carry anything on you. Single rune, regs, instrument and maybe an id wand. Find some player run libraries and locate the dungeon runebooks or if it has popular farming spot runebooks. Either way, look for ones that label where the specific monsters are. From there, just go to the UOR home page and utilize the search engine at the top right to get more information on monsters. Example- Dread Spiders http://www.uorenaissance.com/info/DreadSpider Hot spots are going to be frequented by pks, but there are spots that you can go that you can farm and still earn some good gp and environments that provide good oppurtunities to escape if you happen to see a zerg comin your way. Just have to put the effort into finding those spots on your own and not look at your deaths as "this is bullshit" but instead what should you be doing differently, or is this prime pk time and should i be doing something else or going somewhere else. Trust no one, especially during events. Leprechaun season officially showed me some true colors but was still fun.
I understand the frustration of having extremely limited play time and not wanting to have annoying people inject themselves into your game play. As @Earsnot mentioned, set up a recall macro and assign it to a single-press key (mine is F12) and you will be able to get out extremely fast. Here is an example: Assistant.Macros.HotKeyAction|3002042| Assistant.Macros.WaitForTargetAction|2 Assistant.Macros.AbsoluteTargetAction|0|0|1171644945|136|122|0|3834 [don't forget to re-target the rune or runebook] Also, if you can farm outside of peak hours (peak hours are typically evenings/nights and weekends after mid-morning U.S. time) you have a greatly reduced chance of getting PKd. You can also set up a hidden character with a newbied instrument running a macro like this at the entrances where the PKs will likely be coming through: !Loop Assistant.Macros.HotKeyAction|1060| Assistant.Macros.PauseAction|00:00:00.6000000 Assistant.Macros.HotKeyAction|1510| Assistant.Macros.IfAction|4|0|set Assistant.Macros.DoubleClickTypeAction|3762|True Assistant.Macros.EndIfAction Assistant.Macros.PauseAction|00:00:00.6000000 Put this on your other monitor or a cheap laptop and if you hear that lap harp, you know PKs are on their way in! You could also add a line that says "BOO!" and distract them giving you even more time to get away.
I bounce back and forth on this topic. But I think I have found my peace with it. Bottom line is that thieves and PKs are an essential part of UO. I actually think that without them, this game would suck. That said, I understand limited play time as well, and it IS pretty annoying that the reds roll through to kill punching bag characters (tamers with no resist or wrestling/weapon skill), no argument there. But honestly, THAT is what they are for lol. Which is why I go back and forth on it. It's annoying, but I love it. I can tell you right now, even with the easy macro climate here on UOR, I wouldn't be interested in stat loss. Don't have time for that. So as a red you aren't looking for the 1on1 "good fight", you have factions and warring guilds for that. Reds are for lynching carebear characters. It really is a grief playstyle, but I am glad it's there. Hopefully factions continue to grow and build momentum, so that the pvpers that actually want a real fight have a better option than a punching bag taming dragons. Advice: learn to love it. Trust me, after this, other "safe" games just feel cheesy.
It's hard not to look at this as just straight whining. It's great that the community has so many suggestions to help you put on your big boy pants, but there is also value in learning how to cope and deal with it yourself. Good luck learning UO.
Hello Torrand I don't like Pvping,so if I see a red my first thought is get out of there(like suggested have a simple recall out macro)),Have some good keybinds for healing thru a dump until you get a chance to recall out....If is more than one and they do kill you don't feel bad in anyway...It took two of them and they know that it took two of them to kill a bard,so is no glory for them! Like has been said your not losing much when you do die..And 90% of the reds show class and will ress you and even invis you at your body so you can loot yourself...Fair play to all the reds that do this...Normally once a red has killed you the classy ones tend to leave you be for a while... Give me a shout on on IRC and I will go out hunting with you m8.We will probs die but will have some fun along the way!
It drives me crazy too. It almost feels like class warfare. The L337 rich on their ethereal mounts come and slay you while you're just trying to make a measly 40k to buy your first small house and then lose the last of your regs in the process. Tuneful is right in that there are some classy PKs who have rezzed me, left my loot, or at the very least left my runebook. It sucks but once you figure it out you can be rich enough to be one of them PKs when you're bored.
Besides what everyone else said, you can always do things like leave chest on the floors at places you are farming to slow down pk movement. Below is a picture of Elder gazers spot in shame, if you put 1 or 2 boxes on those red X's, you'll slow down most pks by 3 or 4 seconds, which on top of the 3 or 4 seconds it takes them to get to you, means you have alooot of time to get out. There are alot of spots you can do something similar.
