So I was testing out boats on this server, and I noticed the Tillerman doesn't care who gives him orders, as long as someone's giving them. For Era Accuracy the tillerman listens to the holder of the boat key, no matter where he's standing on the boat. If there is no key holder, he only listens to the person closest to him! This includes a person on a different boat hugging that boat's rear end if there's a ghost standing on the boat hold.

The Janks is upset at this issue.

They also accept whispered commands from certain spots on the boat (more than one tile away). Something tells me all the tillermen have a natural tenancy for mutiny! :)

Well in order to talk to a tillerman you must be on the boat he commands. As far as the tillerman ignoring a player if he is farther away, but on the boat, than another player that can be open for discussion.

As someone that multi-accounts and fishes with friends, I really like the current system. Way more convenient this way.

If people actually can give the tillerman commands from outside the boat, I agree that is a different problem.

I think that sounds correct - I think pre-ren they would listen to anyone, correct? But around this time it was the boat key that provided command.

I don't know about the whole "Key" part as I lived in Fel where you didn't keep stuff like a boat key on your person unless you were a straight up OG. I do agree with the being closest to the tillerman to issue a command and that would be UOR Era Specific. Really not a big issue as there are not many Pirates on this server.

I believe that is why CrazyJoe brought it up because he is trying to play a pirate.

Ok, let me clarify with scenarios.

Two or more people are on the same boat and there is no boat key - the tillerman listens to the one closer to him.
Two or more people are on the same boat and one has a boat key - the tillerman ONLY listens to the boat key holder
One person on the boat, while another is on a boat right behind him. The tillerman will listen to person on the boat only if he is closer to him than the other person, however will NOT obey commands of the other person on the boat - this is most likely an OSI/EA bug.

All the way up till Blackthorns Revenge I think, a mage could open the corpse of a person on the other boat, whereas a person could see what was in their corpse. If you were close enough on your own boat (standing on your plank, while the other person was on the side of a boat), you could loot that person. So for Ren Era, Telekinesis should open a corpse!

And gbus - despite Felucca rules, people didn't always put a boat key in their hold.

I pirated over 110 boats in my pirate's life - I miss it the most.

I've noticed that sometimes while alone on my boat the tiller man won't listen to me until I move to a different part of the boat.

This is known, and unrelated. For lack of a more technical explanation (cuz the cause hasn't been fully pinned down yet) is that there are some regions that have 'dead zones' and if you're in one of these pockets you can experience the tillerman being unresponsive. It appears to be the same cause as trying to dry dock a boat from a location and getting the 'cluttered deck' message -- you can move a few steps to correct this as well.

I personally enjoy the fact that the tillerman will obey anyone on the boat, without this boating with multiple people becomes tedious and un-enjoyable.

However more robust options for piracy wouldn't hurt. Perhaps it could even be expanded to where one could eventually bribe over a tillerman of an unattended boat to gain control of an otherwise secure boat, this should take a few hours however.
The greatest upside being the removal of all these nasty boats left parked everywhere used for nothing more than a fancy recall location or in some areas safe farming/banking.
Don't get me wrong I'm all for strategic usage of boats, however I'm thoroughly against the ability to leave them parked safely for years on end whilst one recalls around each weekend to refresh them.

If you're gonna have that, might as well let lockpickers pick door locks and secures, and let people bribe the real estate vendor to buy empty houses that people just recall to every weekend to refresh.

A much simpler (and non-grief) solution to the problem is to just have boats that are left in close proximity to another boat or static object get teleported to a random spot after say a day or two. That way no one loses their boat due to uncontrollable circumstances while logged out, but you don't have the same boat parked in a desirable spot for 2 years.

As for the original topic, it's pretty irrelevant.

    1) If a friendly player or alt is on your boat with you, who cares. It might even be helpful.

    2) If a hostile player is on your boat with you, you've already screwed up, and the ability of anyone to control the tiller will only last as long as their HP.

i run multi- clients when fishing, i do not like this piracy promotion... if you really want to pirate just drop a couple of ev's on the guys deck and reveal them.

It doesn't matter whether you like the piracy promotion. Piracy is supposed to be part of the game. The current, messed-up system messes up the game. This isn't Trammel.

I've yet to test it myself but the correct mechanic would be for the key holder to override anyone else on the boat range wise.

We have boats slated for a full review in the near future to address a variety of issues such as ignored commands, phantom cluttered decks, item decay and such.

We actually just found a bug with the speech system for boats this weekend that was causing an invalid boat to handle 10% of the speech on the server. Boats also will refuse to allow you to dock them if a static item exists under the boat resulting in a large amount of pages.
