The more I think about it, the more I think this mechanic should be implemented if feasible. As far as I can understand, this was a pre-UOR functionality. So given the notion of "how would this have looked without Trammel?", I think I have to conclude this was something that would exist in UOR-era UO if it weren't for Trammel. That said, it's Lord of the Flies here, and of course rather than use this sparingly against vets, people would use a mechanic like this grief the sh1t out of new players, leading to a deluge of pings and pages to staff. So maybe it *should* be here in theory, but just isn't practical.
I saw the picture days ago and was holding my tongue as best I could until it was actually posted here in relation to the topic at hand. It is fairly unrelated considering Rikktor didn't take the gate as far as I'm aware, but teleported there. I'm equally surprised, if not more so, to see my friends engaging in such activities. I'm sorry you have shit all over your shoes but it stinks and I pointed it out. If that was something you wanted to keep super secret, perhaps not engaging in such things would have suited better. If you're proud of your accomplishment, then wear it as a badge and don't think it makes me look bad/worse because I threw the stones. No one's perfect, but every person but napo that I saw in that picture were once good honorable players who stood by my side in A^T and fought against just such things as bug abuse and house killing. Play your game how you want to play and if you want to be mad at me for blowing up your spot, that is your right. Just don't expect me to sit here and keep quiet while you're out there doing these things with friendly guild tags. Honestly I don't even know if you're in A^T any more so I suppose it doesn't really matter. You don't get in guild channel in IRC and I don't know if you even have a tagged character. I like you klaus but if you know me at all you know I absolutely loathe cheating, bug abuse/exploitation and the grief of house killing, regardless of the target.
blaise, i realize that you are compelled to defend your remarks, however i'd appreciate it if you would take a moment to reflect on the fact that this thread isn't about you; it is about pet gating. i realize, of course, that most things are, indeed, about you. almost everything is about you, in fact. this one thread, though, isn't. tl;dr: stop derailing.
someone said this: I'm pretty sure pet gating does not include MOBS, and unless I'm mistaken, balrons are not tameable. Therefore it would be impossible to gate balrons, or any MOB for that matter. and I said since we're talking about gating mobs, I thought I'd share now that it's fixed
I read what you said, but Rikktor wasn't gated. A gate was just used to get him to teleport much further than would be expected. Unless I'm mistaken, that would make the picture irrelevant to the topic at hand. However, that being said, on the topic of terrible things players can do with terrible mechanics, the picture is spot on.
It wasn't irrelevant - it was a pretty good example of what could happen if mobs could be gated. You're just being an asshole.
I don't believe the initial post was meant to include gating MOBs. We're strictly discussing the idea of gating pets, and pets only. Let's not get too carried away with this..
Man, where is my statue? The Chinese food guys got one for their fun gating shenanigans, didn't they?
Well Mandevu, the topic of gating anything not under your control is I suppose worthy of the thread, in my opinion. Olden days had Entice and Herding which as I understand it, were how people gated balrons to their homes among other things. That's not going to work very well here for the shard as a whole and I think the point is really that gating things not under your control is undesirable for various reasons up to, and including but not limited to, that which is evidenced in Mes' picture.
This was the OP. It states nothings about MOBs being gated around. We aren't talking about herding balrons or wtf ever else you want to bring up, but tamed pets. That's the question being raised. Should we enable the ability to gate people's pets. Not barons, ancient wyrms, liches, or fucking rikktor. Whoever started blabbing about how that ruined some other server they played is a moron for not properly reading the initial suggestion that was brought up. Then everyone else who derailed the purpose of this thread by fueling the straying topic by arguing about their personal issues with each others actions and the harmful affects of herding or gating damn balrons is just as stupid. Do you think PET GATING would be a good idea to implement onto THIS server? Why/why not.
Anything related is acceptable discourse for the topic at hand. Stop being such a baby about topics fleshing out to include more related material. In the end, it's not likely to happen because the mechanic only suits grief tactics and dickmoves. Feel free to argue in favor of more things to piss off the unaware and drive players away from the shard. It will do a whole ton of good. I think Pet Gating AND Monster Gating are terrible and should never be implemented for the sheer fact that there is no good that will come of it that would be worth the effort of coding it. That is my opinion, I know I'm not alone and I know not everyone agrees. This does not in any way mean that I care if you think it's on topic enough.
The simple fact is, this is a poorly disguised attempt to have a means to let the pk gank squaders run through the champ spawn type guilds/people. From what I've seen the drags are about the only thing that is giving them any trouble.
